69 Yenko Camaro

I have a tough time sometimes posting pictures on this site for some reason. I have a thread on TC about the camaro I bought recently. Here is a link to it and some photos. I had asked some questions about it before I bought it but wanted the thread pulled until my deal with the owner was complete. The car is VIN 615382 which is a Hugger orange 4 speed car sold at Francis Chevy in Bridgeton, MO. The pics show some neat stuff and some not so neat stuff. The worst mods were done in the mid to late 80's. The Hidden VIN is intact but the dash plate was taken in the 80's and that is a shame. I know where it went when it was taken but haven't found it yet..... The front end was installed sometime in 70-71 from 2 sources in MO. The door glass was in the car until the mid eighties and the floor came up in the 80's as well. I spoke with a former owner from Salem, MO and when he owned it the stock interior was in the car with a simple roll bar. The fuel tank was in the car and the trunk pan was perfect. The next owner fixed it until it was broke..... It is what it is... I don't know why some of the things were done because from everyone I talked with they all knew it was a Yenko but seemed to not care and kept cutting...

Wasn't this the same vin as the '69 Yenko Camaro with also 5k miles that was sold at Meecum 10/05? Part of the 5 car collection from Keith H. that sold for $1.7MM? The Chevy dealership in Orlando had it in the late '80's with the long list of LS6's etc. at the time. 5k mile ex race car I remember at the time. Also sold at BJ '90. Did the race car still exist??? This should be interesting.

Re: 69 Yenko Camaro

The Man that left with the dash plate asked to cut a hole in the cowl and remove the Hidden VIN. The owner wouldn't let him. the guy also asked for the Speedometer and didn't get that either. From what I have heard in the last few days, this happened to other cars around the same time.

Tommy,
I do believe I saw your vin tag at Mecum in '05 (or one JUST like it!). So the question is, who has the real car! I would vote for you since you have the body with the hidden vin's and hopefully the trim tag. The big $$$ buyer is in for a rude suprise on his '69 Yenko. Good luck.

Those pictures of it racing are from George Ray's "Wildcat" drag strip down in Paragould...you can tell by the clothes that the first picture was taken several years ago, but the second picture looks recent...yes, George still lets folks stand at the starting line like that during the racing...you can't see it in the picture, but there will be folks lined up along the edge of the track as well.

Re: 69 Yenko Camaro

The car was raced a lot at Paragould. I was given photo albums to make copies from. It was also run at Sikeston if I remember correct and also at Ozark International in Springfield. He mentioned others but I didn't write it all down. I know the car was in the Salem, MO area and the Poplar Bluff, MO area from a couple of owners. I go to Poplar bluff once a month and I have an appt with that guy coming up soon. We talked for a while the other day and he told me some neat things about the car.

This situation happened recently here in PA. The car with the vin had to give it back to the car with the firewall. Now there is a real Yenko with it's vin plate back, and a clone with a empty hole in the dash - just the way it should be.

Unfortunately, it took 15+ years, but diligence pays off https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

I foresee lots of lawsuits being filed soon on this one. I'm sure the guy who bought the set of Yenkos at the auction isn't going to be real happy with losing $250K or so of value.

Re: 69 Yenko Camaro

Charlie is right, there will probably be a suit. There was/is a few with the PA car. However, it's settling down now and it appears that the guy with the clone took it in the shorts.

Cool another original car has been found, but sucks that someone got taken on the other orange car with the real car's VIN. I know its "buyer beware" with stuff like this, but I can't help feel a bit sorry for the guy who paid big money for this other car that "appeared" to have the correct VIN and was thought to be an original car...wonder what the hidden firewall VIN is on it? Anyone know who restored this other car?

NovaMob03 08-17-2007 10:18 PM

Re: 69 Yenko Camaro

For that kind of money you'd think that the buyer would have had it inspected by a professional before taking possession, or at least looked at the firewall #'s himself. That auction was nearly 2 yrs ago https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

Ha...Ozark was my stomping ground...we may have ran against that car! You get to Poplar Bluff once a month? There are a few sYc members there, and we're about 90 miles west of there...

Who bought the Yenko set at that auction and was it later broken up?

Re: 69 Yenko Camaro

If the car in question is indeed the 5000 mile orange car, it is probably the same car Super Chevy's (row of LS6's) had in 1989. I am 100% certain Super Chevy's bought it restored. I am also fairly certain it was bought from Los Gatos Ferrari whom also bought it restored, but I might be wrong on where Super Chevy's bought it. I know it was a dealer that had it, that I am fairly certain the selling dealer did not do the restoration either. Super Chevy's bought it in the summer of 1989. Super Chevys sold it in the parking lot in Scotsdale after no saleing it at the 1990 BJ auction. I want to say it brought $90K bids. All the heavy hitters were on it. I want to say it was sold to someone in Idaho? Iowa? to a collector, and I want to say it was $97K. I looked that car over and cannot remeber finding a hidden VIN under the cowl, but it is not hard for that to be painted out anyway. If there would have been any noticable problem, Super Chevy's would have stuffed it back to the dealer they bought it from in a second. No one ever suspected the car was a rebody so in those days nobody over scrutinized these cars. They were ONLY worth $100K then! ONLY $100K! That was monster money in 1990.

So if this is indeed the same VIN number as the hidden VIN car, someone obviously made a deal to buy a VIN tag from the race car and let the owner of the original race car keep the race car. I am not sure who is more of the crook in this deal. The guy that may have built a car around a VIN tag, or the guy that sold the car twice! It is a real shame, because at the time, the orange car was probably the nicest restored Yenko around, hence the record sale in 1989. Except for a less then perfect urethane single stage paint job that really needed some attention. The rest of the car was super nice even including what appeared to be excellent original interior. The car was really done by a pro to look as real as it did.

I do not remeber the car having any pedigree stating who did the restoration. If it was a big name, seems I would have rembered it.

I wish I could drop both the 68 and this Camaro off where yours got its makeover https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif The Yenko could be one really neat (and fast) car in the right hands.

I know the old Ferrari of Los Gatos going way back . They were dealing in muscle cars for years. Has there been any discussion of thier reputation on the board. Is it one that may lead people to beleive that any car they had could be bogus based on previous situations/reputation ? They have been Bentley of Silicon Valley for at least 5 years now and are now owned by Symbolic . No longer a factory Ferrari dealer.

Is it also well known that the '68 Island Teal Yenko Camaro that also sold as part of the 5 car Yenko collection at Mecum '05 was a rebody? Somehow I don't think that story travelled with the car either.
It bring up the question again, how to we keep track of the cars with issues to protect the truly original cars?

Re: 69 Yenko Camaro

The Grape Ape lives on!

That's a hard question to answer. If you know something, and you are public with it, you get burned. If you know something, and are discreet with it, you get burned. Ask me how I know this! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif (silver deuce(s) come to mind???)

When a care with issues comes to market, the information you have will certainly polarize the parties - one guy will be grateful, the other will be hateful. I guess you have to take the high-road, discreetly inform, and live with the fallout.

Those of us with some longevity in this hobby knew right away where this topic was going, and quite frankly didn't see the need to beat it up. If somebody knew who owned the restored car, somebody would nicely inform him. Until then... it's a waiting game to see what will happen.

I'm not. This is a real issue, and I can think of atleast one other green 69 sitting in a farmer's ditch with hidden VINs that wouldn't make a current owner too happy. But, I have discussed this with individuals here before....and no one wants to discuss this. Seems that this was a pretty common practice by some in the 80's. Is there a statute of limitations on these fraudulent acts?

I have also said before I went silent for 18 months that it is a shame that there are those out there who know about these cars and don't speak up. Everyone is quick to provide a list publicly of the VINs in certain cases....but no one wants to speak about the known VINs of cars that have "issues". I am not sure who is more fraudulent, those who produce/sell these rebodies or those who have info and don't make it known.

If I were to re-pop a x-ram manifold and sell them on eBay, people would be quick to point this activity out. Rebody a ZL-1 or Yenko....and depending on who you are, people may never hear of it.

If you can back up your story of a green something in a ditch, by all means post it. This thread is still here but because the interest in it has apparently run it's course or there is no new news are we going to be accused of covering up ?

If you bare talking about the # 27 ZL1 that is rebodied that Gary Holub owns he has been up front with people I know that he has shown his cars to. He and many others have no problem with rebodies and seem to figure they got a deal on them when they buy them cheap. We all have different opinions on the subject.

Kim-- I am referring to the same green Friedley car you are thinking of, wasn't it 615356? Has that one been openly disclosed as a possible rebody? WHo owns this one now?

Charley-- I think my post was not meant to be as abrasive as it sounds even to me as I re-read it. I understand the hesitations with discussing these issues on this type of forum....and it is a shame that atleast the rumors/inuendos can't be discussed openly to have the owners put them to rest, if appropriate. Otherwise, they should be brought forward and maybe an asterisk put next to the cars in the Registry? I can vaguely remember a discussion about another 69 that was involved in a garage fire and then re-bodied....anyone remember specifics about that one?

I remember the story about the one on the farm with the vin, and trim tag supposedly being sold back in the 80s I think. The last I heard was that it had been checked on, and had been crushed a few months ago. Again, this is all hearsay.
I kinda remember a discussion on a RG car, but can't quite put it together.I know one was found in a ditch in Maquoketa, and may, again may have found it's way to Marion.
I was thinking that it was FG, but between welding smoke, and paint fumes over the years, I'm lucky to remember to zip up most of the time. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Are you saying you have evidence of some specific people in this hobby that own/built a fake car and there's a scheme/conspiracy hatched by some other individuals to hush it up, or even worse...profess it's authenticity [with knowledge to the contrary]? That's how I read your post, but I hope I've misinterpreted your comment above.
