What can Pypes do for you?
1 Attachment(s)
I've received numerous PM's about my escapade at GIR last Friday, so here's the scoop.
My previous best run was in 2005, which was: 2.22 in the 60' 14.25 ET 98.69 MPH This year I came with a new exhaust system installed, but didn't change anything else. I kept the same engine tune, never even looked at the timing, curve, or jetting. I used the same wheels/tires, same manifolds/smog, same springs/clamps, etc... I did not change my driving style, no sidestepping /stabbing the clutch, or flatshifting. I did remove my tach this year, I shifted by 'feel'. So, the only change was the Pypes = 2.5" mandrel bent, X pipe, sans resonators, crossflow muffler in the stock location and tailpipes exiting in the stock location. The first run off the trailer on Friday was the best, air was decent as was the traction. The car went: 2.10 in the 60' 13.50 ET 104.11 MPH That's an improvement of over 7 tenths and 5 mph!! I like Pypes https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif There is more in there if I could drive https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif Mel Bogus wrote 'GO FAST, STAY SAFE' on my air cleaner - that couldn't hurt either https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

Re: What can Pypes do for you?
That Tach is just window dressing anyway.
I am Reeeeally impressed with your progress,by just this one addition. A good second quicker w/nearly 10 MPH added. Here are some of your other stock exhaust ET's I recorded at Gateway Intl. in 2004. 14.56 @97.06MPH 14.53 @96.26MPH 14.71 @96.04MPH |
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Yep! The seat of the pants feel is impressive, 3rd gear is a total rip https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif The hard part is keeping the tires under it, whether it's on the street or the strip.
I don't plan to make any additional changes, just the exhaust (sorry Sammy!). In fact, I'm going to replace my original rear leaf springs with the concourse versions that the SCW uses for their restorations. It's tempting to use the super stock springs, but.... like Atlas wheels - can't do it! |
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Your car looks better to me w/the stock Magnum 500 rims anyways.
|
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Thanks!!
Quite frankly, you couldn't wipe the smile off my face on Friday - I was hoping for 13.9x's, but a 13.50 almost made me put the car away while I was on top! I wheel-hopped a few more 13.8x's at 103+MPH, but I didn't care - that 13.50 made my year https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Where's that pesky Franky at? |

Quite frankly, you couldn't wipe the smile off my face on Friday - [/ QUOTE ] I can attest to that! We had just arrived at the track when Marlin pulled back to his trailer. Tommy K and I walked over to ask how he ran and he immediately grabbed the time slip and showed us. He was like a kid on Christmas morning. Congrats M! Well deserved. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif (However, after seeing what that mouse-motor did, ...........I left my rat in the trailer! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif) |

Re: What can Pypes do for you?
It's a thought. All this 'Day 2' talk has the wheels churnin though. I've been spotted digging in the far, dark corners of the garage. It's kinda scary back there........ but in a good way. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: What can Pypes do for you?
I really do think it would be neat to see a bunch of Day 2 stuff at SCR11. Whether a set of wheels and tires, sitckers, whatever. Joe's Dana car looked sweet with the black steelies and slicks.

Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Works for me. It had been suggested that we dedicate SCR11 to the smaller supercar dealers, such as Dana and Thomas. Their creations were very Day2.
And we already have a poster boy. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...DSC06594-1.jpg |

Yea, yea, would've, could've - means nothing to a stout 13.50 at 104+mph https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif I could kick myself for not changing the exhaust a few years ago https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Marlin,
I glad to see your Nova went so much faster with that system. When we did the original work on it a few years ago, I knew it would really let the cars breathe that previously only had a couple of choices of crossflow mufflers. The cool thing is it is actually relatively quiet for a muffler that passes almost 100% of the air through it that a straight pipe does. I think we achieved the best of both worlds; performance and sound control. I know it worked very well on the 400-455 Firebird we did the prototype on so I am glad it did so well on your 350. If you email me, I can send you some photos of how we fabbed the first prototype with the PYPES front system and then fit it on the car. Tom |
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
I would love to know more about how this system was designed and built. How did someone in MO get involved with a PA outfit??
|
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
The Canadian COPO Nova has been running that exact system since 1988 with the dynomax muffler! Home made I might add!! We chose not to share our little secret, as it always gave us an advantage! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

"I would love to know more about how this system was designed and built. How did someone in MO get involved with a PA outfit??"
Hi Marlin, I will be glad to tell you. We have tested mufflers and exhaust systems for many years trying to find the ultimate one to use on Dad's 455 Lemans wagon. We wanted quiet as heck with as good of air flow and fit as we could get. Once we figured out what to do to his A-body GM, we decided to try it on Firebirds/Camaros which happen to correspond to Novas and later GTO/Omegas/Apollos??? too. We wanted the ultimate ground clearance and the best air flow and sound control you could get from a single muffler package. As all the guys and gals know, the old chambered exhaust for Chevrolets used a dual muffler, transverse setup as did HO Enterprises back when they were selling Pontiac aftermarket parts in the late 70’s and 80’s. No one made high flowing quiet transverse setup recently (note I said “high flowing and quiet”). Having lots of pals with these cars, we figured it was time to try our hand at it. So, Chris at PYPES loaned us the front set of pipes for the Firebirds, we borrowed a set of SD Pontiac Firebird over-the-axle pipes, bought a set of Walker Dynomax mandrel bent, Firebird-Camaro tailpipes and a Walker UltraFlo 20" muffler, 2.5" in and out (for pickups; it had dual inlet, dual outlets) that happened to have darn near the right center-to-center pipe spacing. We had mandrel bent versions of the over-the-axle pipes created in 2.5" and then sectioned one side to reverse the rotation into and out of the muffler creating basically two, straight-through pipe systems in one package. We also had to modify the tailpipes to enable them to do the same thing. Once this was done, we used stock hangers where we could, made sure it fit and sounded and quieted well, tested the muffler for air flow and then let PYPES take over. They installed the system on one of their test cars, tweaked it as needed, and had the pipes mandrel bent from aluminized or 409 st. st. tubing and then offered it. The first versions were sold with no or different mufflers but the later ones (current ones) use a clone to the Dynomax UltraFlo. They work very well. Theirs uses some variation of hangers but one can make the system fit with stock hangers on one side and by using a slight variation of stock on the other. It turned out to sound good, be relatively quiet (as best it can for the muffler volume available) and it way out flowed the crossflow chambered muffler used for so long by F-body cars that need ground clearance. We knew it would work well on drag cars that need to run this sort of system and fortunately, you and COPA Pete confirmed what we had hoped for from Day one, this configuration does work well. As you know the tailpipes were set up for Firebirds so for NOVAs and earlier f-bodies, modifications are required but I have heard the shorter tailpipes are in work and will offered soon. Magnaflow sells another, more universal system but not sure it is priced any better and ours fits and looks more stock since we started with stock-style parts and shapes. I have some images, drop me a line at and I’ll email them to you. Thanks for giving the system a heck of work out. I am hopeful others needing similar benefits will also find out how well this sort of exhaust system works for performance, fit, sound control, and ground clearance. Tom |
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
I'm sold, I was going to put a stock system on my 72 and 74 Camaros but this sounds like a better (and easier to find) option.
|
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
The Pypes system did tuck up nice on our Camaro...we picked up some serious MPH over the Flowmaster system.
|
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
This was my first trip to the track, and I'm willing to lay odd's that there's a 13.2x in this car https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif I've got to work on my suspension....

Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Ha!!
Tom, thanks for that explanation. When I was searching for a replacement exhaust system, the qualities that you described were exactly what I was searching for. I don't like obnoxiously loud mufflers, I wanted a stock style muffler, I wanted 2.5" mandrel bent pipes that looked like the stock head pipes, and it was imperative that the tailpipes look identical to the stock ones - round pipe, angle cut, exiting 2" below the rocker. It had to tuck up tight just like the stock system, nothing looks worse than seeing pipes hanging down. Then there was this little 'X' pipe option!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: What can Pypes do for you?
Great Marlin, we did it then!
What does yours sound like? Is it rumbly or crackly or how best can you describe it? The X really gives it an awesome sound and cuts down on resonation too doesn't it? Tom |
