Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
Speaking of old headlight shots, isn't this Linda Vaughn, Miss Firebird Gasoline, just before she got hooked up with Hurst??
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa015.jpg Dog427435 posted this one before but I don't anyone noticed who it was. |
Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
[b]You are observant John, and perhaps the only one who noticed -
Coming from a small town in Georgia, Linda Vaughn's first association with motorsports was her becoming Miss Atlanta Raceway in 1961. GM noticed all the attention she was getting and made her Miss Pontiac in 1962. She became Miss Pure FireBird in 1963 and carried that title through 1966 representing Pure at nearly all the NASCAR races. She became “Miss Hurst Golden Shifter” beginning in 1966 and the rest is history! She is seen below with Freddie Lorenzen. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa120.jpg - |

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa124.jpg [/ QUOTE ] Hey, where's all the sponsor logos???? How come this guy's not a walking billboard for TV interviews???? Why isn't he swigging on Powerade for the photo???? Because those were the days when men were men and had grease under their fingernails. Today they get manicures in their luxury motor coaches and have a hat guy who hands them sponsor hats while the TV interview is underway. BAH! HUMBUG! I'll take 1961 any day. |

I love those pictures, they bring back memories of when my dad would take me to races back in the 60's. Real modified street cars driven by real men. A whole world removed from the politically correct infomercial pitchmen that run the sport today.

Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
[b] A contributing factor to King Richard's 200 wins was before NASCAR entered the modern era in 1972
they raced an amazing number of races each year. The following photos were taken at Islip Speedway in 1964, this was the 39th race of 62 that year. Islip a 2/10 of a mile track was the shortest track ever used in NASCAR's Grand National history. The Grand National cars ran there '64 - '68 and in '71. When NASCAR entered the modern era with only 31 races and Winston as the major sponsor, Winston demanded all races under 250 miles be dropped. 1963 Rookie of the Year, Billy Wade won this year. He only won 4 races in his career, but they were 4 consecutive wins between July 10th and 19th. Unfortunately Billy died in early '65 during a tire test at Daytona. Petty won here twice, in '67 & '71. His '67 season was the most dominant season ever with 27 wins in 49 races! To see all these big new cars run here when you were used to seeing the much smaller jalopies race was like watching 100 cars line up for an Enduro Race. I'll never forget watching Petty thread the needle through all the cars to take the win in '67! You thought he would wreck any second, but I think he finished without a dent on the car. He was an amazing driver! - - A young Richard before he was King - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a022.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a020.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a021.jpg - - Not sure who this is - Ned Jarrett?? - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a026.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a025.jpg - - A couple shots from '65 - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a027.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Chevy/a024.jpg - - |
Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
Sure looks like Ned Jarrett.

Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
Somebody needs to show Richard Petty that old picture of himself. He looks alot better without the sunglasses and the cowboy hat with the peacock spread of feathers.

Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
On a 2/10 mile track, you'd have to be careful not to run into the back of yourself!

Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
So who copied who? Richard Petty or Burt Reynolds in "Smokey and the Bandit"
