Re: R model Fairlane
Neat car but doesn't the reserve need to be disclosed if it is being advertised on this site? I had a post removed in the parts for sale section for not disclosing my eBay reserve. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: R model Fairlane
It's not in the for sale scection. I posted the auction and the owner did not know I was going to do it. You can ask him the reserve and I'm guessing he will probably tell you.
As for the part you had for sale. You posted it with no price. I posted that you needed to price it. The post stayed up for a day yet you never responded so I pulled it. I'm guessing by your comment here you saw my request but chose to ignore it ? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

Wow, and all built with open rear? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif [/ QUOTE ] From what I understand, Ford did not option cars with high numeric rears like GM and Mopar did. I do not know why, but this is my general understanding. |
Re: R model Fairlane
Open rearend is not too uncommon. All 65 Z-16 Chevelles had open 12 Bolts.

Mike [/ QUOTE ] I agree that it's not uncommon...but 57 purpose built drag cars, built all the the same color with open rearend seems odd. Not being a 'Ford guy', did the factory figure that the rears/gears were going to be changed anyways, so why add the cost to the car and put a peg legger in there? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Mike |

Re: R model Fairlane
i don,t know,factory built race car with a heater?
|
Re: R model Fairlane
Not so much a factory race car, such as a Thunderbolt, Z11 Impala, or '68 Hemi Dart/Barracuda, but an homologation special, just like the ZL1 Camaros. Build 50+ to get them OK'd for Stock/Super Stock, but still street legal and able to be driven on the street by those so inclined. ZL1 Camaros had heaters and while they didn't have open rears, they did have those restrictive 396 exhaust manifolds and exhaust systems.
As for Ford's delivering them with open rears- Equa Lock rearends are somewhat rare in the early/late '60's. I don't know if there was a reliability problem or what, but Ford Engineering and Carroll Shelby seemed to favor Detroit Lockers at this point for racing efforts, but their noisy action created a lot of unwarranted complaints at the dealership level. My guess is they wanted the car to be quiet and functional as-delivered, then subsequent Detroit Locker or spool installation would be on the owner. That's just my guess. I don't think Ford was afraid of low (high numeric) rearends necessarily. T-Bolts had 4.57's I believe. But again, if some of these cars were going to end up on the street, 4.88's are just a pain and a warranty issue waiting to happen. Its hard to sell a lot of purpose-built race cars. Even Shelby had to turn a good number of the 427 Cobra racing cars into S/C street cars just to make them go away. TOM |

i don,t know, factory built race car with a heater? [/ QUOTE ] Clear to me you have never driven one. If you ever get the chance to drive one on the strip through a set of headers and slicks you will see very quickly why the heater was left in .You will need it to dry your underware. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gifI hate fords but respect these probally because it was the only car I have ever driven that scared me.And not just once. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |

Similar to those 427 Comets! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif [/ QUOTE ] Yes Rick we had one of those up here also one of 22. Tom knows the car well. She was bad but the fairlane would eat her. It was not really fair however since I think the fairlane had the motor tweeked with higher compression pistons vs stock and some other vintage speed stuff.I was driving an original 66 L-72 biscayne 4spd at the time so it was not like I didnot know what power was. It was a shocking type of power like when I got to drive a 66 l-79 Nova. When you let off it was like where did that come from and yes I think I would like to try that again. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif |
Re: R model Fairlane
yes mac,the l79 nova was fast, drove a brand new one in 66,and it did rip
|
Re: R model Fairlane
So how did the L72 Biscayne stack up against the Fairlane, Comet, and Nova??
|
Re: R model Fairlane
hate to say it but,all three would whip on the big biscayne
|
Re: R model Fairlane
Actually a locking 4.11 was originally planned. I'm not sure why that didn't happen. It could have been many reasons as they had a devil of a time getting them to production. Initially they planned to build 70 units but problems prevented that. As for the heaters, I've seen some without but I'm not sure if they left Atlanta that way. The intra company communications make for some interesting reading. Really special cars.

Re: R model Fairlane
Just plain wicked. Charley, thanks for the heads up! I'm not a buyer but was stoked to have the chance to check out the rare unit!
Thanks, Jason |

So how did the L72 Biscayne stack up against the Fairlane, Comet, and Nova?? [/ QUOTE ] Hi Paul: I never had the opportunity to go head to head with the two 427 fords but on the strip I think she would beat both of them just because neither could get their power to the ground, The biscayne was a very consistant low 12 car on slicks and yes air plane fuel. She would hook up real well all the time but the fords would not. They out powered her for sure but I think the best time I remember for the comet was mid 12's.That was with 70's suspension technology also. Today it would probally be a different story. The Nova HAAAAAAA. That little sucker I ran many times and she was lengths back every time. The ZL1 cam and other Gm performance parts in the l-72 and 456 gears took care of any small block that was foolish enough to try to beat her on the strip. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |
