Not one foreign car, not even a VW bug. Those were the days!
Glenn, please tell us you took photos of car dealerships too. |
Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
It would be neat to see pictures of those very same streets today as a comparison. Nice pictures. You are right, it was a much simpler time.

Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
I work across the street from DIS, I have driven by it everyday for the last 24 years on my way to and from work. The street the speedway is on is now 6 lanes across...
International Speedway Corp. (owned by the France family) bought the property across from the speedway to develop it into a huge shopping/movie/entertainment complex. The Main street pier looks the same today...the boardwalk is being leveled for condo development. For grins, I'll try and get pics of those streets this weekend for comparison. Mike |

Glenn, please tell us you took photos of car dealerships too. [/ QUOTE ] - Bill I wish. I don't know why but it never occurred to me back then to do that. I guess it seemed like they would always be there. All the times we stopped by Baldwin Chevrolet to see what was new on the floor I could have filled a book. We would stop by Baldwin at least every other week, but the place we stopped every couple of days was "Z Motors" . "Z Motors" was in Valley Stream near the city line. It was a block long with the office/showroom in the middle. All the cars on the east side of the office were just used cars. But all the cars on the west side were muscle cars. Very few were stock, they were all day 2 cars. An assortment like you couldn't believe. The amount of cars they sold was amazing! A lot of them were beat to piss and just fixed enough to sell to a young kid who didn't know better. But to a knowledgeable shopper there were deals to be made. And forget the back row - old drag race cars and street racers they felt were to far gone to try and fix and sell. These would go "as is" cheap - cheap. Got a couple of cool cars and spent many nights taking "test rides" - I would love to see some shots from there! Glenn - |

Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
Glenn,
It sill bogles my mind that you had the foresight to take as many historical pictures as you did back then. At the time I would have thought many of your shots were meaningless but now they are priceless. All of that and the fact that back on the early 60's cameras were not very good, they were bulky and not everyone had one. Again, hats off to you for sharing all of these with us. These are some of the best photos I have enjoyed on this site. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
Dog, Those ARE some of the coolest pictures I've seen in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOng time!!!! Boy do they bring back memories of when I was in college at Embry-Riddle '69-'73. The beach, pier, local streets full of sand, the shops. Man, what memories. I just can't believe you took so many pictures of just "everyday stuff" back then. I think most people just thought that was the normal everyday thing, and only bothered to waste camera film on something truly "special". You seen to have had the foresight to know that even the everyday stuff WAS special at that time. I can't tell you how much I appreciate those photos and the memories they bring back!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif
I think I had a Brownie Starmight camera back then, but a roll of film was probably $2. so I didn't take many pictures. Boy, do I wish I had...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/drool.gif Thanks again!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Verne |

How'd you like to walk through this and say, "I'll take that one, that one, that one, that one, that one....."

Glenn,
I was back east visiting with the original owner of my race car over the weekend and he was mentioning that he enjoyed eating at the restaurant across the street from Daytona. Do you happen to remember the name and/or have any pictures of it? If anybody does it would have to be you. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif -Jon |
Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
[b] Sorry Jon-
I don't remember the restaurant you are referring to - I looked but I could only find a couple other shots of the area. Jon's Camaro - NICE! - Is it ready to race again? - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa155.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa154.jpg - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa152.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...7435/aa153.jpg - |
Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
Thanks for your efforts, Glenn. I appreciate it.
The car is being worked on. When it's done, you guys here will know about it. -Jon |
Re: DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY 1962
For those that don't know...Jon's Camaro shown above is the first Z28 ever built...
