ZL1 items
Went and looked at a 70 L78 Chevelle this afternoon and this is part of the stash the owner had in the back of his storage area

The spacer was used on ZL1 and other high horse (L88) applications in order to clear the temperature sending unit with the curved neck.

It was also used on 1965 396 425 hp corvettes .

Not on any factory-built ZL-1 Camaro. They used the standard t-stat housing with no spacer just like an L72 or L78.

The spacer was used on 396 65 vettes as Chuck said and then on 67-69 L-88 vettes.

So ZL-1's had a 660 housing?

All '69 bb Camaros located the temp sending unit in the LH cylinder head and used the '660 housing. There are vintage engine bay photos of the #3 & #5 ZL1 Camaros that show this.
Corvettes may be different. |

Anyone else notice the carburetors in those pics of the #3 and #5 car (assuming they are in fact #'s 3 and 5) They still have their factory-installed 4346 carbs instead of the 4296 units. Nice catch on the carbs. I wonder why those carbs are installed on ZL1s. The vette also looks to have a aluminum water outlet.

That is #3 for sure. Notice the missing nut on the upper alt bracket stud.
It is highly likely that is #5 based on it being a dark color automatic and the mention that it went to Shay Nichols. Gibb sold the #2 car shortly after he received it. The #5 test was reviewed 30 years later by the original writer, Ro McGonegal in the June 1998 Hot Rod. He mentioned the car was built with a "vacuum secondary" carb and they swapped an 850, making traction worse. DH managed an 11.64/122 out of it with lousy traction-it was cold, early in the year as Gibb is wearing a top coat and the trees in the background are bare. I guess #5 still exists but there is not much left. |

I'm not saying either story is credible, they're just the most plausible ones I've personally heard so far. Eric |

An OE flat-bottom duct hood air cleaner has a vent tube with a 90º bend. The tube will contact the rear pump on a DP carb. Later vent tubes have 2 45º bends.
Notice the #3 car has a metal heater hose clamp; #5 built minutes later has a ty-wrap. |

Eric [/ QUOTE ] Eric, I got it from multiple ( credible ) sources that the 4296 secondary pump lever did indeed have an interference problem with the ZL/2 air cleaner base assembly. I can-t remember who, but one member here contacted me off-line with verification. Steve pump lever. |
