Jersey Late Great Chevies Picnic photos

At Verne's invitation I attended the Jersey Late Greats picnic today in Mercer County park, West Windsor, NJ. Definitely a nice bunch of folks. They welcomed me with open arms even though I was the only Mopar guy there. Here are some photos from the event:

A group shot with all the cars including a Corvair vintage race car.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7000071.jpg

Some nice Corvairs from various years, including a van:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7000072.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7000073.jpg

A really slcik early El Camino (1960-61???) with a 348:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7000074.jpg

A 1958 and a 60/61? and my old dodge:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7000090.jpg

And the piesta-resistance (pardon my butchering of the foreign spelling). Verne's 1962 black and red, Impala SS, 409 four-speed convertible (the real deal). Complete with tow tabs, red sparkly Grant steering wheel and Mickey Thompson rims. He's owned it since 1968 when he bought it off the bargain lot in the back of Reedman Chevrolet in Pennsylvania:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7000088.jpg

And though Verne is embarassed by what he considers the undetailed engine bay of his car, here is a photo. Sorry Verne, but they have to see this. Verne, that's not dirt in there, it's called patina. This is how a 60's-era hotrod should look!

Steve...thanks for the pics! Verne's car is killer!

When I saw the pic with your car...the Sesame Street song..."one of these things is not like the other...one of these things just doesn't belong" came to mind...LOL

By the way...your Charger is way cool. Is it a twin to the yellow one out here?

Verne, if you dont like the "recent" engine shot, how about we call this a vintage shot from back in 1968. No one will know the difference. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Yes, that is a '60 EC and the convert next to the '58 is a '60 as well.

Verne: Your '62 is PERFECT. Owned by you since '68? How cool is that!

In Mopar-speak, the yellow one out in Arizona is a "run of the mill" 1970 hemi Charger R/T. Mine is a 1970 hemi Charger R/T-SE. Dodge made 112 R/T's which included the 15 R/T-SE's built. Kinda like an SS-RS Camaro, the highest performance option package combined with the highest level trim option package. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Steve,
Thanks for making the trip down to join us and bringing your superb Charger.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif It was great to meet you in person https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
But now I know what a sneaky guy you are...... I thought I left the hood closed on my '62 to prevent any embarrassing photo ops. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Thanks for a nice comments guys https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif Don't worry, I don't plan to ever "restore" the car, but it sure is overdue for a little "fixin' up" under the hood!!

Thanks again for posting the pictures Steve. It was such a perfect day, it's too bad a few more local guys from this site weren't able to make it. The best thing about the day was that it proved that whether you're a hard core Corvair guy, a hard core Mopar guy, or anything in between, we all really share the same interests https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Second Chance Offer: We're planning on doing the same thing next year!

Verne, It was great to meet you and the rest of the gang there. I had a great time. Too much food though! I'm still stuffed.

-there's nothing to be embarrassed at with the underhood condition of your car. Some guys strive for years to duplicate that original look that you perfected 39 years ago when you bought it. You should copyright the look. I sure do love that sparkly steering wheel. Brings back memories!

Isn't there a local cruise night coming up or something? I thought Mike mentioned something about one in the near future.

-Steve

Looks like a good turnout. You guys should have given me a shout, I'm only 10 minutes away from Mercer County Park. But the 70 was in the middle of some brake repairs(leaky rear cylinder) so it was out of action for the day. I'm guessing the late great club is really for late 50's early 60's Chevy's. Love that vintage picture of the engine! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Jersey Late Great Chevies Picnic photos

Steve, The cruise night that Mike's Vette club is hosting is the 21st (Mon.) at Banditos in the South Brunswick Mall on Rt-1 So. He hasn't sent me the flyer yet, but when he does I'll forward it to you (if he doesn't send it to you too). I'll need your email address. Anyway, I can tell you how to get there.
Rt-1 South to South Brunswick. You'll come up a hill to a light and see a huge green water tower on your left next to a car wash. Proceed down the hill and the next light is New Rd. Right after New Rd. on the right is the entrance to the mall.

As for the old '62, I don't want anyone to get the impression it still has it's original motor. Many years ago I deciphered the marks on the trunk panel from the original dealer emblem, that Reedman just popped off. It was Laffin Chevrolet in So. River, NJ (later I was able to confirm that through the NICB, when it was easier). Anyway, I went down there and was lucky to find 2 older guys, about the retire, who worked there then. I brought pictures and they actually remembered the car because the owner caused them so many problems. (and it was the only one like that they sold) They confirmed that it was a 2x4 car originally, 4-spd and 4.11 posi. They replaced TWO engines under warranty, then said the owner had a THIRD replacement done at a private garage in town after the warranty expired. The one guy was a mechanic there and said he replaced a few shifters in the car because the owner kept bringing it in with the handle bent out of shape.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif When I bought the car in July '68 (I was 17) all that was left of the original driveline was the T-10 4-speed, aluminum bell and the axle housing. The motor that's in it now is a '62 block that I rebuilt in '83. Sorry for rambling. I didn't mean to write this like a Member's Rides thing. (and don't get any ideas Bruce.....) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Re: Jersey Late Great Chevies Picnic photos

Jeff, the club is based on the '58-'64 "X" frame design full size cars, but we have Corvairs, Novas, El Caminos in the club as well. It's open to anyone with an interest in those cars (ownership is not required). I'm the treasurer this year and trying my best to stick to a budget and knock down expenses so (hopefully) we can afford to lower our dues and attract more members. I founded the club in '82 and in the hay days of the late '80s and early '90s our membership soared to a high of 168, but now we're running at about 52. So, that's us in a nutshell..

Hey, it's not the quantity of gas, it's the quality. I used up 2/3 of a tank to go to the picnic. That was last year's supply of race gas!

Well, it was old gas anyway and I needed to drain the tank. Driving it is the most fun way I can think of to "drain" the tank anyway.

Hey, I drove this thing to Island, which a lot longer than your piddly little drive. Raced it, then drove it home with plenty to spare. My carbs are as big as your carbs!!! Ha! Ha! It must be a "gas guzzler" It should be Banned https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif

By the way, imagine that El Camino next to me (behind me) in black(!)(the picnic) Yep, it's the same one. Only he had a 427 with a 3bbl in it at the time. That's Tom's.
