HELP! 66 corvette fuel problem
 

Hope some one can help with this.
My vette has not been fired in 4 or 5 months. I fired it up today and it was smoking like a freight train. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gifIt was not smoking when I parked it.
It was however spewing a little fuel from the carb when I shut it down last fall/winter.
I was able to back it out of the garage(befor dieing of c/o poisioning) and smoke was pouring from the side pipes(again, It did not do this when I parked it) It wouldnt clear up so I shut it down. I lifted the hood and could see what looked like dirty fuel (was for sure fuel,but looked just a little oily) all over the top of the fuel pump and a little laying in the intake manifold at the base of the factory holley carb. I also noticed some on top of the right side exhaust manifold, thought maybe the fan blew it up there??
When I could finally enter the garage again, there was a small puddle of the same dirty fuel on the floor just below where the fuel pump would have been and a drip pattern where I had backed out.
I also pulled the dipstick and it smelled strong of fuel.
Is fuel some how still flowing into the motor after it is shut off? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif It seems to me that it is or was. The throttle linkage is not hung open or anything. I have never had a problem like this. Does the carb need rebuilt and the fuel pump replaced? Could this have damaged the motor some how? It was not knocking or anyhting like that. I probably only had it running for 3 or 4 minutes, and I pushed it back in the garage.

The diaphrahm in the fuel pump might be bad and letting gas drain into the oil pan.

Charley is right.... though sometimes if it doesnt run right (too rich) it will wash the cylinder walls and smoke

Thanks for the quick reply guys!!
So I could have 2 problems, 1 the fuel pump diaphrahm and 2 a rich carb.
Why so much fuel all over the top of the fuel pump and on the garage floor? What about the small puddle on the intake just below throttle arm (driver side)?
I should change the oil now? or just before I fire it again? Thanks again guys!

There is a little hole in the side of the fuel pump. When the diaphram goes bad it will weep stuff out of that hole. You could also have stuck float in the carb that could make it flood. A stuck float will let any pressure in the fuel line overflow the carb andf fill the intake, eventually making it's way into the cylinders and past the pistons into the oil. Drain the oil before you try to start the car again. If there is enough gas in the oil pan it can make a heck of a explosion.

Although my guess is that the fuel pump diaphram is bad and/or the float is stuck, I once had a major smoking problem from a stuck choke (black, rich gas smoke), so you might check that also.

Been there, done that! It took out the oil pan, timing cover, internal parts of the Holley carb, both valve covers and several gaskets not the least to mention a fire. The A/C oil breather on the cover almost imprinted in my head as it preceded the valve cover by a few milliseconds. Not a pretty sight.

Been there, done that! It took out the oil pan, timing cover, internal parts of the Holley carb, both valve covers and several gaskets not the least to mention a fire. The A/C oil breather on the cover almost imprinted in my head as it preceded the valve cover by a few milliseconds. Not a pretty sight.

Thanks for the wealth of knowledge! I just finished rebuilding my holley carb. Havent attempted that since a teenager, went well though. The only things that stuck out during the carb rebuild was the rear needle and seat ass. looked like it was stuck closed and most of the screws in the whole carb seemed a little loose to me. Fuel pump will be here tomorrow. going to install carb, fuel pump and change the oil and see what happens? I would love to hear any more advice some may have on this issue! Thanks again!

OK Guys, Im pretty bummed. I pulled the fuel pump and drained the oil. There was a lot of fuel in the oil!! Im not sure how much yet, havent measured the drain pan contents yet. Im afraid I may Have done damage to the engine. I sure hope not. Any thoughts on what to do next?? I was thinking about pulling the distributor and priming the oiling system while rotating the engine by hand to make sure everything has oil again before fireing her up. Any thoughts??

If you are worried.. Cut the oil filter apart and look for metal. I wouldn't bother pulling the dist and priming the pump. Run it with new oil and then change it again.

Oil and gas mixed together are not near as bad as water or coolant in the oil. Oil and gas should be plenty to lubricate at idle.

hello,i would recomend cleaning your NEEDLE and SEAT in the fuel bowl.it is very likely that a piece of dirt is caught between them causing engines to run like crap. it only takes a few minutes to pull each out AND CLEAN.dirt bewtween NEEDLE AND SEAT will cause your symptons.hope this helps you out.MIKE

OK Guys, I have installed new fuel pump, completly rebuilt carb and changed the oil and filter. I measured the oil and gas mixture in the drain pan today--had 8 quarts of fluid cant hardly beleive it! 5 quarts of oil and 3 quarts of fuel. Now for the good news! The lifters chattered a little at start up, she was still puffing a little smoke. After a few minutes of running at an idle, no smoke and no lifter noise. Its running beautiful and not a knock, ping, nothing!! I was so stressed about the bearings in the motor being bad! I got lucky on this one. Thanks to all of you who posted with your experience and knowledge I was able to sleep the past few nights, not well but did sleep. I wanted to give everyone the good news tonight, but most of all THANK YOU!!!!!! Charlie, 427King, Paul, Rick, Bruce, Jason and Mike. You guys Rock! God bless! Travis

You're one lucky guy. A buddy of mine who owns a 47 Chrysler woody sedan blew the fuel pump diaphram couple of months ago while driving up an onramp. Heard a slight knock then pulled over. The engine had to be totally rebuilt.
