'64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
1 Attachment(s)
Just wondering if anyone might have an idea what this may be and if there is a better way to read it. I found this carbon copy (carbon side down) under the original carpet on the passenger side of my Norwood '64 and when I hold it up to the light I can just make out a body code. Attached is a phone pic as found. At one time it was over the floor plug (can see the marks) and at some point it moved back right in front of the seat. It looks as though most of the details may have been rubbed out from passengers.
Could this be all that's left of a built sheet carbon copy that was "ringed" to the carpet for build identification? I did find a small ring stuck in the padding near it which could have been holding the sheets there. Thanks for any info, Paul |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Could be Paul. I have a perfect buildsheet out of a 64 Impala SS I owned that was in the rear seat bottom...

Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Paul,
I've never found a "carbon". I don't think any found their way into a car. The various assembly stations around the line received their own "original" on a teletype machine. Some of those originals were attached to subassemblies that made it into the car, like seats, side upolstery, instrument clusters, etc. When (if) a sheet was dropped where it wouldn't be seen when the car was assembled, it just got left there. The body of the car was a rolling trash can for the guys on the line. I think it's an original that's just succumbed to the tar paper and carpet backing, with a little dampness thrown in. I can't tell you how many original buildsheets I've found in a car with a VIN sequence for the previous car or next car on the line. Verne |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Verne,
I have to try to get some more info off of it. It's definitely carbon paper and the paper/clean side was against the padding. There is no tar paper used under the carpet, just jute padding. The only tar type pad is under the back seat. The floors and padding are very clean. Other pieces of paper found and the carpet date tag look great also. When I hold it up to light I'm seeing a negative, black background and white writing. I'm checking with a 'Vair source also who has done a bunch of research. Hopefully something more will be visible on this. Thanks, Paul |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Good luck Paul. That's a First. I've never found any carbon in any '64. Is the car a Corvair? I should have noticed it was Norwood. There were no Norwood full size cars in '64. That explains the missing tar paper and carbon, I guess.

Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
I think it is possible for it to be a carbon copy. I have many sheets from mainly Wilmington DE cars and one that I have is a carbon copy. It has blue characters and the backside is the stuff that goes on to the next sheet. It also has the piece of masking tape on it from when it was once stuck to the body during assembly. It also has the holes on one side, and the handwritten number is in ink, unlike most you will see that are copies. I was at a PA yard last week and found a car with FOUR sheets, all from that car, oddly enough.
Verne, do you have any 64-70 Chevrolet Wilmington Sheets? Steve |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Steve,
I have quite a few '64 Wilmington build sheets. Not all plants used the same type of sheets. Wilmington used large 8.5x11 with "X"s in the boxes to denote the options. No cryptic codes. Wilmington did leave a lot of paper in their cars. Verne |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Verne,
This is from my '64 Nova. A while ago I was talking/working with a few people (mainly 'Vair guys) about build codes between different plants and between different cars built at the same plant. -Trying to combine known info of different models from the same plant to help fill in some blanks for both sides. Maybe they'll have some background info. Paul |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Paul, If only your search was for Full Size '64 data, I'd be able to help pull everything together for you. But many of the codes were shared between body lines.
One of my best and closest buddies has a beautiful original '64 SS that he has ungraded "some". It's a 4bbl (220) 283, and it runs like the wind. One tickle of the throttle and it gets your attention and says, "ok,let's GO". Verne http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...z/SideFull.jpg |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
ooh, nice car he has there. Saddle Tan SS with tinted windows.
What color is the interior (Saddle, Fawn, Black..)? It's an original 283 with a Powerglide? Paul |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Paul,
The car is Desert Beige with a saddle interior. Originally a 2bbl 283 P/G. I fixed him up with a correct 4bbl for 220hp, and he installed a 200R. The interior is the original. (except for the stereo hidden in the tissue dispenser) http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...tz/Novaint.jpg |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
Verne,
Nice setup with the upgrades and the as included dual exhaust. I hardly ever see those colors... or even these cars that nice. I wonder if his is a mid build car. It's nice to see another black column clamp on a '64. No dash pad but a deluxe seatbelt, day-night rear view and PB radio car. -and after delivery nobody added a pass mirror yet... good. Is his carpet original? Mine is Silver blue and blue interior. |
Re: '64 Build Sheet carbon sheet or ??
I have the cowl tag data but not handy. Might be a May car if I remember. The carpet is the original. Everything in view in the photo is except the obvious radio in the tissue dispensor and he added the tach. It was one of those "old Lady cars" and he got luckey. Actually, I and another friend found it on the field at Carlisle then we called him and told him he just bought a car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif He's been in love ever since......with the car I mean. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif
Verne http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...z/DSC_0850.jpg As for your comment about the OSRV mirror, the left one is not stock. It was one of those odd-on things. The car probably came in with no OSRV mirror at all, which I'm sure you know was possible because it was an option! He wants to put the correct one on and spot repair the place where that one is. |
