396 block

I have a 396 4 bolt block, casting # 3935440, date looks
like E 24 8. I started building this a few months
ago. It's bored 060. The deck had been trued at some
time, you can not read the vin number. Would this block
be anything special? Is this something I should save
instead of using in my bracket car.

Re: 396 block

Bored 60 and decked, I would beat the crap out of it in the bracket car, 4 bolt or not.
All the best
Joe

Re: 396 block

That 440 block was used in the gibb nova and the date hits perfect for one of them. I would hold on to it. Kim

Re: 396 block

Even 60 over on a 396 and decked Kim ??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
How many gibb nova owners would use it.

Re: 396 block

I don't know how easy it is for you to find 440 blocks but they are rare around here. I found 2 in the 15 years I looked for them. # 1 is the Gibb nova motor was stamped only two days in the month of June. Those dates are only 2 days from each other. His block is a late may block. Find another one like it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 396 block

You are probally right Kim. I could not lay my hand on a original 4 bolt right now but I am almost positive I still have some 2 bolt 440's in the pile. I guess I am just not a big fan of a 60 bore on a 396 for a original car and would sooner convert a standard 2 bolt to 4.I also saved and saved and saved BBC for that rare application which is why I now have a barn full of boat anchors too heavy to ship to the US where they are in demand. Did sell all of the square port stuff but 10 years too early.
Take care Joe https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Joe, The hard problem is the date. It's a two week window https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Nothing if the block was subjected to a sonic test prior to boring. Early 396's were not consistant with respect to their bores being centered and have to be checked very closely prior to boring. Some would take a 125 overbore where others would destroy themselves if pushed even with a 60 overbore.I have seen a few pistons in the lifter galley and water jackets over the years.
Maybe I am old school but I have not had great luck with bored 396's. Rather than a 408 or what ever it is I would start with a standard 427, unless it is an original motor for a car.Just one mans opinion. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Mine's H298. Kim, now shhhhhh...let's let this thread die quietly.
Kim, honestly, you're knowledge & input regarding the Gibb Nova's is always appreciated. I don't think anyone knows as much about them, or has found as many as you have. You are the 'Godfather' https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif
