Re: ZL1 block found
now can it be repaired and who is can i have fix it its just the bare block
|
Re: ZL1 block found
so what your saying is around 3 g's for the block would be fair even needing all those repairs
|
Re: ZL1 block found
hey buddy i dont know much about the block and dont want to buy it if its going to cost a fortune any help or advice in this matter
|
Re: ZL1 block found
Is it a 69 dated block? A competent machine shop should have no problen repairing the block. I think $3K would be a great price for you.
|
Re: ZL1 block found
i guess i should get it than just not sure what it will cost to repair it , i guess i can also use it as a coffee table till than , just joking
|
Re: ZL1 block found
Plan on thousands not hundreds to fix. There are many things that need to be looked at other than the physical repairs. Ive even had a block that physically looked good after repair but the cam geometry was off center and the bores not straight and it would eat cams and lifters one after the other. Couldnt get anyone that wanted to touch fixing it at any price, and those few guys were fixing blocks blown in half for other customers.

Re: ZL1 block found

Re: ZL1 block found
after all of that now i really dont know what to do ??
|
Re: ZL1 block found
Blue... If it is just a over the counter block needing lots of repairs I wouldn't pay 3K for it. If it had the vin stamped down by the oil filter for one of the 69 ZL1's it would be worth more. Also check to see if it still has a build stamp on the front pad. It it went to a actual car it has more value than it just being a over the counter poorly constructed block.

Re: ZL1 block found

Re: ZL1 block found
now the other bad part had to pay a little more than i hoped but still pretty happy with the price ,i tried 3,000 but he laughed a bit but we came to a fair price
|
Re: ZL1 block found
Wow. It sounds like you found out its repairable and also what a fair price was even though you werent even sure if you should buy it 4 hours ago. When you sell it or decide to use it you may want to send the site a small donation for a quick education you wouldnt have gotten anywhere else.
|
Re: ZL1 block found
i dont think i'll sell it as of right now just got back home and i'm beat and my computer is slow at the shop i'd love to make a donation and much thanks to eveyone for there input , now i just need to figure out what and where it came from , it has mickey thompson stamped on the bottom side where the lip of the oil pan bolts to the block ????
|
Re: ZL1 block found
I had one that had Mickey thompson stamped like that about 10 years ago or so. It had aj foyt also on the block, i think they were gifts from one to the other back in the day . thats my guess..
|
Re: ZL1 block found

Re: ZL1 block found
anybody know of any shop that might take the project on of repairing this block
|
Re: ZL1 block found
It would help if you could post some pictures of the areas needing repairs. Where in CA are you? I know a guy here that is pretty good. He fixes aluminum intakes for me all the time and fixed a ZL1 for me in the past.

Re: ZL1 block found
Blue,
There used to be a machine shop that did high quality aluminum block repairs on Washington Blvd. in Whittier off the 605 He had a bunch of rare blocks he was just sitting on for years. Trying to remember the name of the place, but definitely remember the $8KUS to resleeve one cylinder (plus the repair) they did on one of Vic Edebrock prototype aluminum 427's about 10 years ago. JB |
Re: ZL1 block found
8K????? Seems a little excessive!
|
Re: ZL1 block found
i had my chevelle block re-sleeved for 100 dollars per cylinder. 800 bucks.
it is iron though, not aluminum |
Re: ZL1 block found
Im fixing 2 right now, fixing these blocks isnt like fixing a broken ear on an intake. With all the welding there is warpage, porosity problems with the aluminum and a host of other issues.Ive even seen a zl1 where the entire cam jouranls and main webbing had to be built completely upo with weld and re machined... 3500.00 to 6500.00 is not out of line. Anyone can do the repair wrong, its doing it right that costs the extra money. And thats assuming it isnt a block thats non repairable. I just fixed a block that had to have part of a block digitially recreated, amazing to see te before and after pics..

Re: ZL1 block found
Was it Taylor engines?
|
Re: ZL1 block found
Having done quite a bit of Aluminum welding, the entire Block must be preheated (600 deg F) or so before welding. Aluminum has a fairly high coeffecient of expansion so when the weld cools, it contracts, causing stress and warpage. Also, preheating allows better penetration of the weld due to less heat draw into the block. The Aluminum alloy will make a difference as well, cleanliness, etc. Welding on die cast parts is difficult because of the higher silicon content and general imputities in the Aluminum.
It can be done with the right steps. Paul |

Re: ZL1 block found
I believe you will need to price it if you wish to sell it here. Im a buyer, but dont want to be used as a high water mark for the next guy. When you are ready and serious so am i.
|
Re: ZL1 block found
Cant take the credit for finding that listing, Someone on Team Camaro posted it and when I saw the M/T stamp it wasnt hard to put the two together.
