After getting a trans flush and being shorted 3 Qts of trans fluid at a valvoline oil chanagefacility , i would have preferred they took my money and didnt do anything just like in the above cases . That way i would have been out 100.00 instead of 1900.00 for a trans overhaul.

James,

You are correct this story was aired on 60 Minutes among other news headlines a few years ago....however this is yet another new story.

I personally worked for this corrupt company...as a District Manager. The upper management was merciful...I could go on for hours. They would do anything to turn a profit...this has to be the fifth or sixth television investigation that I am aware of on Jiffy Lube and or Quick Lubes.

I recognized the District Manager attempting to lie to the reporter....boy was he in hot shoes. I bet he was on the phone with the Regional Manager. I dreaded having to attend the quarterly meetings in Omaha...where you would have to show your entire quarterly P and L statement to the Shareholders, Regional Managers and District Managers. If your numbers happened to be down over prior year you were mercifully scrutonized by the Shareholders in front of your peers....and this meant that your replacement was being flown into your town shortly.

If you or anyone you may happen to know frequents a local Jiffy Lube....I strongly advise you to show them this footage. Perhaps you or they may be there next victim. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

I hate to change oil in my daily driver... to me it is not worth getting dirty for the $25 they charge... then having to get rid of the old oil... I will put a timing belt or water pump or other $$$ ticket item... but an oil change.... give me a break... I much rather do something more rewarding than to change oil...

427king 04-01-2007 10:00 PM

Re: Jiffy Lube

There are also several oil change facilitys here that charge 9.99 to 14.99 for an oil change on special ....go buy 5 QTs of oil and a filter, get dirty, and then find a place to dump the old oil???? i dont even think you can buy the oil and filter for what those places charge.

Re: Jiffy Lube

All this lack of pride in your work crap is all over--Years ago I took a buick of mine to the dealer for a 12,000mi check up--When I go to pick up the car I go over the maintenance work done with the service manage and part of the scheduled maintenance was to rotate the tires. I had to laugh when I saw that they had written all tires rotated and told the service manager his mechanics could proably fix any problem ---------All the tires had wheel locks...........True Story-------------Never went back.

Re: Jiffy Lube

my daughter took her VW (4NJNK)to a jiffy scrube in Mass and they stripped her drain plug and replaced it with some "molly" thingie. It was empty by the time she got home. They denied everything, even the Molly plug ( all her other services were from the dealer). A new pan was needed and installed by VW. Actual cost of savings is unknown. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif
She always gets those VW $49. dealer oil changes now.

this looks like Jiffy Lube policy acording to those workers in the video. It goes way beyond the $5.00 per teaspoon of brake fluid that I remember at the pumps. Those boys are crooks!!

Re: Jiffy Lube

I once got a flyer for a 12 point free check-up (tire rotate, fluid top off and etc) from the place where I bought the car. I worked very close buy and winter was coming up so I brought it in. When I went to pick up the car it caught my eye that there were no finger prints on the dirty aluminum wheels. I brought the manager out and asked him how they can rotate the tires without even touching them. Was great seeing him squirm. I had the GM of the dealership taking care of me on the next visit. For this reason, I'll do all the work I can to my cars. Even oil changes. It only takes a few minutes..

Scumbags!

I drive a Lincoln Mark VIII and my wife drives a Trailblazer - without a lift and an engineering degree, your not getting those oil filters out.
You need to find a good guy and keep going to him. I have a friend who has been servicing my cars for over 10 years and I'd trust him with anything.
Last year I got a new set of tires from Tires Plus - they gave a complimentary oil and filter change with a set of tires. I watched from the garage doorway the "mechanic" carefully wipe the filter down without taking it out. Nice - never again!

I use Lube Dr for all our work trucks and personal cars and have since they opened here, I and anyone who works for me actually go into the pit and watch them to make sure they get all the grease fittings and it also gives us a chance to check things out underneith. For less than 20 bucks it's worth it. Our local Ford dealer gives us free oil and grease jobs but the lost time of the guys sitting there is not worth it. Similar situation Darren. My ex-wife took her Blazer to the local GM dealer for an oil change/tire rotation. When she picked it up she noticed something wasn't right; a red light on the dash. She shut it off and went back to the service manager. Long story shortened; they had drained the oil and replaced the filter but had failed to put the new oil in! They immediately corrected their mistake and told her they were sure it hadn't caused any damage to the engine. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif
When she told me the story later that night I exploded. I was at the dealership when the service manager arrived the following morning. I confronted him and he acted like a sheep in the company of wolves. THEN I jumped him about the tire rotation we paid for and didn't receive. How did I know? Two of the tires were RWL and the other two were blackwalls. Both the RWL tires were on one side with the RWL to the inside so they matched the others. Everything was in the exact location as when she drove in the day of the non-work!
All association with that Dealership ended that day! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif

For that, and many other reasons, I change my own oil and filters! Granted, I'm not a Certified GM Service Technician, but my customer is satisfied! Also, I have a number of choices as to where I drop my used oil.

"OIL CHANGE INSTRUCTIONS FOR WOMEN"

1. Pull up to Speedy Lube when the mileage reaches 3,000 miles since the
last oil change.

2. Drink a cup of coffee.

3. 15 minutes later write a check and leave with a properly maintained
vehicle.

Money Spent:

Oil Change $20.00

Coffee $1.00
----------------
Total $21.00
----------------

OIL CHANGE INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEN

1. Wait until Saturday, drive to auto parts store and buy a case of oil,
filter, kitty litter, hand cleaner and a scented tree, write a check
for $50.00.

2. Stop by 7-11 and buy a case of beer, write a check for $20.00, drive
home.

3. Open a beer and drink it.

4. Jack car up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands.

5. Find jack stands under kid's pedal car.

6. In frustration, open another beer and drink it.

7. Place drain pan under engine.

8. Look for 9/16 box end wrench.

9. Give up and use crescent wrench.

10. Unscrew drain plug.

11. Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil: splash hot oil on you in process.
Cuss.

12. Crawl out from under car to wipe hot oil off of face and arms. Throw
kitty litter on spilled oil.

13. Have another beer while watching oil drain.

14. Spend 30 minutes looking for oil filter wrench.

15. Give up; crawl under car and hammer a screwdriver through oil filter
and twist off.

16. Crawl out from under car with dripping oil filter splashing oil
everywhere from holes. Cleverly hide old oil filter among trash in trash can to
avoid environmental penalties. Drink a beer.

17. Buddy shows up; finish case of beer with him. Decide to finish oil
change tomorrow so you can go see his new garage door opener.

18. Sunday: Skip church because, "I gotta finish the oil change." Drag
pan full of old oil out from underneath car. Cleverly dump oil in hole in
back yard instead of taking it back to O'Reilly to recycle.

19. Throw kitty litter on oil spilled during step 18.

20. Beer? No, drank it all yesterday.

21. Walk to 7-11; buy beer.

22. Install new oil filter making sure to apply a thin coat of oil to
gasket surface.

23. Dump first quart of fresh oil into engine.

24. Remember drain plug from step 11.

25. Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan.

26. Remember that the used oil is buried in a hole in the back yard,
along with drain plug.

27. Drink beer.

28. Shovel out hole and sift oily mud for drain plug. Re-shovel oily
dirt into hole. Steal sand from kids sandbox to cleverly cover oily patch of
ground and avoid environmental penalties. Wash drain plug in lawnmower
gas.

29. Discover that first quart of fresh oil is now on the floor. Throw
kitty litter on oil spill.

30. Drink beer.

31. Crawl under car getting kitty litter into eyes. Wipe eyes with oily
rag used to clean drain plug. Slip with stupid crescent wrench tightening
drain plug and bang knuckles on frame.

32. Bang head on floorboards in reaction to step 31.

33. Begin cussing fit.

34. Throw stupid crescent wrench.

35. Cuss for additional 10 minutes because wrench hit Miss December
(1992) in the left boob.

36. Beer.

37. Clean up hands and forehead and bandage as required to stop blood
flow.

38. Beer.

39. Beer.

40. Dump in five fresh quarts of oil.

41. Beer.

42. Lower car from jack stands.

43. Accidentally crush remaining case of new motor oil.

44. Move car back to apply more kitty litter to fresh oil spilled
during steps 23 - 43.

45. Beer.

46. Test drive car.

47. Get pulled over: arrested for driving under the influence.

48. Car gets impounded.

49. Call loving wife, make bail.

50. 12 hours later, get car from impound yard.

Money Spent:

Parts $50.00

DUI $2500.00

Impound fee $75.00

Bail $1500.00

Beer $40.00
------------------
Total $4165.00
------------------

But you know the job was done right!

I used to do my own oil on the daily drivers (Yukon) Tried it once on my 95 Mercedes and found it need a special wrench to replace filter. Nobody touches the "collection" but me.

My cousin briefly worked for one of the major oil change places. He was explicitly instructed in the artful recycling of your existing oil filter and even oil into your own car (Best for the environment AND the shop's bottom line!). He left shortly thereafter.

I hate changing oil on the daily drivers as well. I use a trusted shop that also does all my wheel/tire stuff.

There is one chain here, Oil Can Henry's, that has kind of a neat approach. You stay in your car, they give you a paper to read if you want it, and there's a video monitor of the tech doing the work to your car. So if you see something you don't like, you can take it up with them right there. They're spendy, but still under $30, IIRC.

My new car, a 2005 E55 requires oil changes at 10,000 mile intervals. Had one done last fall and the bill was $300.00.
It has no dipstick, all levels are read electronicly. I found a part number for "measuring device" read dipstick. Price $150.00.
My wife had a 2003 Volvo XC, everytime I would try a quick lube place they would never have the correct filter. wasted more time in lineups only to have to book it at the dealer for 30 minutes work.

I used to be a partner in a transmission business and I know what it take to do a proper trans service. It sure as heck cant be done at a quick lube joint.

I'm sorry you have had a bad experience with Tires Plus. I have CO-OWNED a Tires Plus store since 11/98. I would hope the experience you had was with a corporate store that is owned by Bridgestone-Firestone. The company kinda went to hell after Tom Gegax sold it to Larry Morgan who was bankrolled by Bridgestone-Firestone. Tires Plus was a mid-west regional company (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan and Missouri) until it was sold to Larry Morgan. He owned several other tire stores under various other names in other states. He purchased the Tires Plus name and then changed all his other stores into Tires Plus stores. Larry only kept ownership of the company for one year and then turned over controling interest to Bridgestone-Firestone. There are several "Licensees" like us who continue to do a good job and have their customers best interests at heart. DO WE EVER MAKE MISTAKES LIKE HAVE BEEN MENTIONED ABOVE. HELL YES. SHOW ME A SHOP OR ANOTHER HUMAN BEING THAT DOESN'T. WE HAVE TO OWN UP TO OUR MISTAKES AND CONTINUE ON.

One of my ASE certified mechanics got in a hurry and double gasketed an oil filter here a while back and I ended up buying a new engine for a 300M. The customer told me he understood that mistakes do happen and while unfortunate he appreciated how we took care of it and that we HAD NOT lost a customer, we had certainly retained one.

Show me another dealership, another "chain" tire/quick lube/brake repair/muffler replacement facility that has not had any claims with their customers. It doesn't exist. DAILY people come into my shop and complain about the Chevy dealership or the Ford dealership down the street from me or the "chain" Muffler shop also down the street. It is just a fact of life. You can make some of the people happy some of the time but you can't make all of the people happy all of the time.

Like someone mentioned above, if you want it done to what you feel is right.......do it yourself ! ! ! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Jiffy Lube

That's the problem with big Corporate America - the only concern is the bottom line. I am a firm supporter of the independents and the little guys who take pride in their work! I have owned my own businesses and know earning the trust of your customers becomes your biggest asset. A happy customer may tell one or two friends what a great job you did, but a pissed off customer will tell everyone they meet what a piece of crap you are!
I go to places where the employees care and stand behind their services and I keep coming back.
I wish you were in my area because you are the type of person I would enjoy doing business with.

JD, you're a good guy. Most repair shops will replace an engine with another of like mileage. What that means is if they ruin you 82K mile Tercel's engine, they're search for another with 82K mileage. It's legal too. It's just like if you're 82K mileage Tercel is t-boned at an intersection. Your insurance will pay you for the value of this used car, and not give you a new one.

I once interviewed a repair shop owner who had a perfect record with the local consumer organization. He said his secret was never arguing with his customers, even if he knew he was right. One guy came in for an oil change and came back three days late claiming his air conditioning system was broken. He blamed the shop even though they never touched the system. The shop owner repaired the air conditioning system even though he knew he was right. Kept the customer,..although considering how nutty he was, I'm not sure that was a good idea.

Re: Jiffy Lube

I got one of the chains back a few years ago.
they were advertising a tire rotation so I took my '89 GTA Trans Am in to get the tires done. They actually noticed that the wheels were different offset from the factory after they got them off and told me I'd have to pay to have the tires dismounted etc. I told them they advertised a tire rotation and not a wheel rotation and after some heated discussion about truth in advertising and the better business bureau they agreed to rotate the tires. Their next ad had a disclaimer in it.

For transmissions I change the filter and what fluid I can get out and keep on driving. Even thats better than 90% of the vehicles on the road get.
