Re: Grumpy's ZL1
I dont know if he had one but I heard they took the engine out of #14...

Ted: where in Missouri are you located?

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
That is what Ed C told me. He said that the engine went to Grumpy before the car was sold. Ammon Smith sold the car and I believe was sponsoring Grumpy. An L78 was in the car when sold. I think it sold in May of 70. I'd have to check the POP to be sure. I've never made an attempt to contact Grumpy but Ed said he had no luck.

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
thanks for the input.

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
The Pro Stock 1969 Camaro raced by Mr Jenkins was not a factory ZL1.
He still has all the paperwork for it; it was a Dover white L78/M22 car. |

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
For some reason, I thought Grumpy raced a CanAm 427 motor or am I mixing that up with a Z11 car he raced years before?

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
Grumpy did run a can am 427 and I have one of those blocks if anyone is interested in buying . Thanks

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
What questions would you ask Grumpy, if you had the opportunity ?

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
I would ask him about the engine for #14. If it still exists he might know.
|
Re: Grumpy's ZL1
Grumps best block was a 67 CAN AM block. Said it was the only one that worked ok. He was not a big aluminum motor man I don't believe. His 69 camaro being a ZL-1 is a new one on me. I doubt it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
Everyone knows that the production ZL1 block was junk. Ring seal was terrible. If the Grump had one, it wasn't for long. The CAN AM block was the one to have.

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
The real Question to ask The Grump. What is the Vin # to that car and is it found !!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
You guys are great !
I know someone who might be able to ask him in the future, but donīt count on it. Iīm with Sam on this one. I donīt believe he raced a factory ZL-1 car, but rather coverted an "all iron"-car with a CAN AM-block. That car COULD be in Sweden ! NickeySwede told me some time ago that his research made him believe that four of "Grumpyīs" cars came here in the seventies. At least one of those went through to Finland. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
William, Are you talking about the '69 car? Always have been curious as to it's whereabouts. I've tried to talk to Jenkins about the '69 but never got much info. It's a shame he's so difficult....a lot of info will be gone forever one day.

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
I don't have a clue where it's at. I take it you know the Vin???
|
Re: Grumpy's ZL1
About two years ago at the York US30 Musclecar Madness event, I asked The Grump about the whereabouts of the '69 car as it was always (and still is) one of my favorites. He seemed kind of irritated that I asked but said he thought it was "out around Pittsburgh somewhere".

Re: Grumpy's ZL1
Being a completely different block and with a bigger bore and lesser stroke I thought the Can-Am motors were always a different displacement than 427?.
Marketed as a 427 perhaps and I forget what they ended up at but in any variation the resulting cubes were always something other than 427?. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif ~ Pete |
Re: Grumpy's ZL1
Being in the top league I guess you could buy a crank with any stroke you wanted. I have read that "Grumpy" commented the engine to someone saying something like: they (the tech inspectors) couldnīt tell the difference betwen the CAN AM block and the ZL-1 block.

The 69 did not come from Ammon R Smith Chev for some reason. I cannot reveal any more as it is not my place to do so. No one to my knowledge is seeking the 69 as it is believed the current owner is aware of its pedigree. |

Looks like he is racing Big John C's camaro. A/MP record holder in that time period. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
