70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
A friend bought a 70 442 W30 Post Sedan recently. He found a broadcast card, but was going to try and find a buildsheet also. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif
Any Olds gurus https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif have a good idea where to look for one? The car has only had some headliner work and appears that no interior pieces have been out previously to his buying it. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...442W306-05.jpg The car was built in Lansing, if that makes any difference. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
You mentioned that it was built in Lansing. This is good. All W-cars were built in Lansing. I would look under the back seat, pull the front seats and look there, and try looking in the passenger footwell under the carpet. Best places I know to look. I hope he has fun with his new toy! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Wow, a '70 W30 Post...I'm jealous!!!
That was top of my 'most wanted' list for many years and my '70 W25 442 Post car was the closest I ever got...I'd sure be happy even with it now!. On your build sheet, check behind the seat backs if buckets...if a bench, I'm jealous again...probably steelies and dog dishers too?. ~ Pete https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Thanks guys. I'll have him check those places first.
Were any ever above the gas tank? Pete, It's a bucket seat car, so you don't have to be too jealous. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif I'm not sure on the wheel package. Rusty, He bought it to relive a car he had brand new and wishes he never sold, like a lot of us. He's done quite a bit of history tracing on it and actually found the original block with a previous owner in Texas. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif Pretty cool. Now he's looking for what he says are the "F" heads. |

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
So you're saying that there isn't any more paperwork in these cars?
We were hoping to find the sheet like Chevy's have to help determine the exact way the car was originally built. Oh well, I guess it won't hurt to dig around in there anyway. Like you said, we do have the one sheet, and the body number on it is the same as on the cowl tag. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
is it <font color="red">RED </font>
|
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
It is a red car, with white bucket seat interior.
|
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Are the sequence number and body number blacked out only for the purposes of showing a photo of this card or are they blacked out on the sheet itself? If the latter who is to say this sheet is from this car? If you or your friend can read the body number and it matches the data tag then you have a match.
This is about the only paperwork you will find in a Lansing built Olds. You can keep looking but you will likely only find another one like this. It is also known as a Fischer Body sheet as it only contains data that pertains to the work performed by Fischer Body prior to the body delivered to the Olds assembly line. Things like tinted windows, power windows, seat configuration and interior color, radio options and W-30 stripes are identified here. If everything checks out, nice rare car! Only 262 2 dr. coupes had the W-30 option in 70. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Here's one in my area. But before anyone asks, it's not for sale. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
I blacked out the sequence number and body number as I felt the owner would prefer I do that.
The body number is matching to the cowl tag. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
I parted out a 72 W31 in Hawaii and found a buildsheet like a Chevelle under the bucketseat after parting the car.

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Shouldn't post 442s have window trim? Or was that a trim option?
|
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Diego,
Alluminum trim aroung the pillar post and qaurter glass was an option....it had to be ordered. Dan. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
you don't need the build sheet,if youve got that.
but,you might want to look under the carpet and in the doors. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
If he is looking for 'F' heads, he needs to do some research and be prepared to open his wallet! I would suggest that he first get the '442 by the numbers' book from Supercars Unlimited . This book is well worth the money. One thing that needs to be verified with 'F' heads is that they have the correct 6 digit casting code on them. I have heard of more than one set of 'E' heads having the bottom leg ground off to make them look like 'F' heads. Good places to start looking for parts would be 442.com and Realoldspower.com (warning on ROP-- you need to have a thick skin in that group! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif) The last I was hearing, 'F' heads were going for $1500-2000 per set and they needed to be looked over/rebuilt. The W-30 aluminium manifold is being repoped (not very well) and the W and Z exhaust manifolds are being repoped as well (questionable quality on these pieces). If he is looking for fiberglass hoods, Thorton Reproductions are the gold standard if you don't have an N.O.S. piece. For suppliers of Olds parts, Fusick and Supercars Unlimited are two Olds only suppliers that have sterling reputations. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Thanks for all the leads and warnings about forgeries on the head letter.
I'll forward that info onto my friend. I think he already bought the 442 by the Numbers book, but the rest may be news to him. Thanks, |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Lots of 442 stuff on YouTube, here's a '70 W30 Post car at the strip to start with...click on the others from there..

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Hi, Dan, thanks for the response. I can't say I've ever seen a post without the trim, but that's pretty cool because it lends itself for the sleeper look. I hope whomever fixes that car puts some wheels other than SSII!
|
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
I looked through some old pics last night and came up with the only shot I ever had of my 70 Post car and it had the trim too.. Anyone computer savy enough to modify and post it let me know as I can't seem to capture it in any fashion other than forward it in an email?.

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Go to www.imageshack.us, upload it, size it to 600x???? or so, then cut and paste the bottom link of the bunch it will give you. Then post it here, but use the "image" setting in the Instant UBB Code table below this text box as you make your post.
Believe me, it's easier than it sounds. Or email me and I'll do it. |

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Thanks a lot!!!.
The car was a 442 Post w/ the W32 455/365hp and originally included the factory W25 Hood, M40 Auto and still had the original engine/trans when I traded it off soon after this late 80's pic...note the W25 hood is not on the car in the pic.. I did get the GM docs after the car was gone and the W25 was included in the original equipment list.. The pic is behind my folk's place a few miles from the Mosport Road Racing circuit exactly where I had parked the car after my last drive when it developed a knock after some midnight laps of the Mosport track w/ my best buddy...6 months later the squirrels had eaten the plug wires, my copilot chum had been killed in an accident and I lost interest so traded it off.. I had a call about 8 or so years ago from a guy who got the car from the guy I sent it to as my name was still on the title...I think he was a car killer/stripper and was only parting the car so believe it's dead now although at hiway speed a year or so ago I spotted a possibile remains of and haven't had a chance to go back for a up close look?. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Rusty,
I bought a set of the repop exhaust manifolds from Thornton and they are aswesome! Joe |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
I completed a frame-off resto on my father's '70 W-30 post in '03, didn't find any docs upon teardown. Luckily the upholstery shop found a broadcast card in one of the front seats, thought it might be important, and saved it!

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
That Gold convertible with the burnt orange stripes and white roof really looks good.
Same with the white post car a few posts up. John |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Really love the white Post car...nice work!.
I can't help but think of steelies and dog dishers myself though?. This whole Olds Post car thread is getting to me.. I'm gonna' go check and see if the remains I saw could be my old '70 car also I spotted a 64/65 F85 Post recently I should go check on too.. Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
What is W25?
Patrick |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
W25 is the OAI Hood...automaticly included on W30's but optionally available on others..

Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Thanks for the comments on the white W-30. My dad bought the car new and it was our family car until '72 when it was replaced with a '72 Vista Cruiser (455 powered of course). The W-30 was parked in '74 with a hatched engine and I finally decided in 2000 to do a "quickie" freshening of the car; of course one thing led to another and a frame-off ensued.
PeteL- I almost went with the steelies/dishes but the car came with the argent SS2 wheels, although I didn't use the original wheels anyway (used 15x7 instead of 14x7). |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Sounds great Sean...looks like a good Member's Ride candidate!.
Is it buckets or bench?. My '70 Post was a buckets DualGate car...always wished it was a bench 4-Spd.. I had a '69 442 Post car before my '70...also gold and was a Bench M40 column shift car.. The orig trans blew the first day I drove it...replaced the trans w/ one out of a Poncho GP...blew the orig motor a week or so later and stuck a 455 out of a '69 Toronado into it and had great fun for a few years!. Seems foolish now but after I bought a '70 Chevelle as my driver I turned the '69 Post into a stock car...the remains are still sitting at a buddy's farm.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete |

That Gold convertible with the burnt orange stripes and white roof really looks good. [/ QUOTE ] Those are red stripes, which were not a recommended color combo with that gold. The original owner wanted the combo because some FL football team is that combo. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
My 70 W31 automatic was originally light green with white stripes and a painted white roof. When it was repainted, I went all green with narrower gold side stripes, and no hood stripes.
My 4 spd W31 was a darker green when I got it with black stripes, but I discovered that it was originally Gold with black stripes. I parted out a 72 W30 that was the teal color with white stripes. Most of the W cars that I've seen over the years have mostly been white or black stripes, so it's cool to see the other combos surfacing. John https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
Ooh . . . a two-tone car? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif Got a pic?
Gold is the third most popular stripe color. It's not common, but it's not rare either. |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
No, I don't have a before photo. I've been searching through boxes of old photos to try to find one. I know I had a couple given to me that were taken at the drag strip, but they disappeared years ago. I'm hoping to run into someone that might have one when I hit a couple of the Vancouver cruises this year.
I have a few pics of it after it was repainted. I kept the chrome roof pieces on it. I'm missing photos of a few cars that I used to own, and I think my ex-wife has probably disposed of them. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif John |
Re: 70 Olds 442 2 Door Post docs
I am glad to hear that the Thorton repops are good pieces. The ones that I was told about were from the Parts P*****. Inferior China made pieces of #4it!
