Google yourself

Last yr I learned a valuable lesson about this hobby & the internet. There was a car for sale in Alabama & I called to discuss it with the seller. He was looking to get between $XX and $XX for it, so I asked him to hold it until I could drive down & inspect it. I got there 2 hrs later & after inspecting it, told him I was interested enough to buy it. He then quoted a new price which had increased another $5k from the top price he'd given me over the phone. When I asked about the increase he told me 'anybody that has 6 figure Novas can afford another 5K bump.'
The info he got off google linked to this site & the Gibb/Harrell feature car that I once owned. I was stunned, but grinned at him, shook his hand and bought the car calling him one smart SOB. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Google yourself

You should have said, "Yeah, I used to own that car but I couldn't afford it, and now that I am back on my feet again, that is why I'm buying your car." Then wait for him to feel guilty and offer him $5000 less than what you agreed on over the phone.

Then you would have missed out on buying a previously unknown Yenko Camaro at a super price.

Re: Google yourself

The point I'm trying to make is that you don't quote a guy a price over the phone and then after he drives 2 hours to get there and look the car over and agrees to buy the car for the price you told him, ask for another 5K. I don't care how rare the car is, or how nice it is, it would be a matter of principal for me and I'd definately tell him what he could do with his car. That's just not an ethicial way to do business. I'm sure that the car Jude bought is a nice car and if he was willing to pay the extra 5 grand then he's a better man than I.

For years I have used a pseudonym, in lieu of my legal name when BS-ing on websites. People like that seller are the reason why. It's just human nature for some people to find out a little bit about you, and then assume that they understand your whole situation. The guy sounds like a bottom feeder to me. JMO

That happened to me over the phone in the 80's when a guy with a 10k mile hemi in Kansas raised his price from $10K to $15K. The car was advertised in Hemmings during the calm before the storm. This car, seems like it was a red Sattelite one owner, still would have been a steal. The guys wasn't a charlatan he just didn't know what he had until his phone started ringing off the hook and he was getting 'sight unseen' offers!!

The seller is a great guy & we've become pretty good friends. He has a 1/8 mile dragstrip in his side yard
When you're looking at a '69 Camaro with what appears to be an original BE rear end, 140 speedo, a vin that is in the middle of 30 Yenko's & a body # only 7 digets away from another car you own, you don't argue...you pay & trailer it home https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

There should probably be a distinction made between raising the price on a car because its worth more than you're asking, and raising the price because you think someone can afford to spend more. Sounds like the seller in this case did the latter, which I don' think is cool https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif

It's great that you were able to develop a friendship with him, but I'm in agreement with the others who think he was out of line for jacking the price for his given reason.

What if you got there, and he said, A guy who shows up in a 15 year old Silverado probably can't afford my asking price. How about I sell it to you for minimum minus $5000." What would you have paid?

Re: Google yourself

Reminds me of a semi-recent magazine article about one of my old cars. The current owner was talking about how he helped a previous owner buy the car from me back in the early 1990's. He talked about how slick he was to hide the name and profession of his buyer friend so I would not raise the price knowing that the guy "had money." How nice of him to impugn my integrity in print.

Unbeknownst to him, I knew exactly who was buying it back then and I make it a policy that when I agree to a selling price, I am a man of my word, and stick to it.

I saw the current owner recently and politely mentioned that I was not happy with what he said in that article. I then walked away, but not before I casually mentioned that I still had all sorts of photos of the car from the original owner that never went with the car when I sold it because they were part of my personal restoration documentation album and because his buyer friend didnt want them at the time.

Re: Google yourself

As an aside. Google people you are dealing with. Google their username ( if you are buying from a forum or ebay) People often use the same name of a number of forums. Google their email address, and google their phone number.

Some of you may remember my post 8 months ago on a 96 impala SS that I got ripped off on. That is currently still under investigation by the police.

However I started to do as much investigation as I could. I found this scumbag on about 6 forums, either because he was using the same username, his name, or his phone number. (google will often index entire forums. especially useful when someone posts their email address).

Suprise Suprise, he had also ripped off a few people on these forums, nothing as big as had happened with me, But had I done my homework before the buy, I wouldn't be in this predicimate now. Needless to say, I called him out for personal satisfaction and he is no longer a welcome guest on those forums.

I still check periodically, and will find him if he's on other forums. I also have a website planned, and as soon as the investigation is over his name and bad dealings will be ensrined for ages.

Food for thought: He is an upcoming college grad, Many employers are getting very savvy about researching recruits. This has become very easy with social networking sites such as Myspace.com and thefacebook.com. Do you think this could have an impact on this future? I do, especially if i can get such a site of page 1 of google search for his name.
