70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
I have a 70 Chevelle Muncie 4 speed shifter on Ebay now. I thought it was for a bench seat after a google search but many bidders have told me it is for bucket seats. I thought I would check here before updating the auction. The number on the handle is 3973867. Does anyone know what this shifter is correct for? The auction can be found here: 70 Muncie shifter
Thanks, Jason |
Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
Judging by the short rise on the handle it appears to be a console shifter....this look is similar on the Novas....the bench seat handles were generally taller and had a more gentle sweep to fit the seat contour....chevelle experts may have diff views, but it looks like the same deal as the novas...hope that helps..

I agree. The one pictured is for a buckseat car.
I have a Chevelle bench seat unit but it's buried in my trailer somewhere. Totally different shape. More like the old Hurst stick for the '55 - '57 Chevys. |

Great, thanks for the info. I will update the auction.

Bench seat handle is an 864, and the 867 is for console applications.

Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
That shifter handle was originally used on a Bucketseat /Manual Trans./NO CONSOLE Super Sport Chevelle/Elco in 1970,and also ALL 1971-72 SS 350 Chevelle/Elco.
I think a Bucketseat/Manual Trans./NO CONSOLE Big Block 71 Super Sport Chevelle/Elco could have come with it too. I believe bucket seat/consoled equipped used the #865 handle, and bench seat used #866. |
Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
The #867 is what they used in the 70 Chevelle with bucket seats with or without console.

I agree with Rick We discussed this before.

Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
I think Rick Cell is right, there were only two designs used.Looking at a few local equipped Chevelles,as well as parts books, here is what I believe they did.
Regardless of engine, the 3 & 4-speed 1968-72 Bucket seat console AND NO Console equipped Chevelle/Elco/MonteC used Muncie shifter #3973867 which is stamped on the shifter foot itself, but Chevrolet parts books see this as shifter #3973866...(GM has history of doing this with parts in the past.Like the 1970 Malibu Tail Lenses,Flywheels and Ignition Coils. The actual manufacturered part itself will show a one digit difference,be it up or down, from what GM parts books & boxes actually callout for.)...The 1970-72 3 & 4-speed equipped,(1968-69 were different),Chevelle/Elco/MonteC Bench seat applications used Muncie #3973864,which is stamped on the shifter foot, yet the parts books call out for #3973865.This is also compared and noted in the AIM. Why some shifters say MUNCIE along with a part #,and others are void of one or both,is a good question.Could they be over the counter issued,Saginaw only or later service parts? |
Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
I believe Muncie one say Muncie while Saginaw ones do not have the stamping.

You guys keep forgetting the Big chevys had muncies also and they probally get more confused with chevelle shifters than any others. Here is chevelle/impala console and bench pretty easy to see why they get mixed up.I have seen more impala handles less part numbers than with one. Also just because a handle does not say muncie on it does not garantee it was not originally installed on one.We have seen over the counter replacements plain and quite a few on caprices for some reason plain but all had muncies. |
Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
The one on the far right looks like what was in my bench seat '68 Chevelle, and the same as the one I mentioned here earlier.
|
Re: 70 Chevelle Muncier shifter bench or bucket seat?
That if I remember right is a 864 out of a 70 chevelle bench.
I know they have a different part number for 68/69 but they don't look any different to me from 68-72. Not sure what the difference may be for the part number change. |
