Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Just spent a few hours in a local guys attic who had a bunch of old stuff from a long closed speed shop from the late 60's and early 70's. It was like Christmas in February. I found a couple of the EB-9A 12 volt sending units (dated early 1970) still in the box and an NOS 10,000 RPM Sun Super tach. I also found the correct American Racing Wheels lug nuts, both left and right hand thread for the 200-S wheels on my hemi Charger. And to think all these years I've had the wrong nuts for my application. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Here's the other sending unit. It looks little more NOS-er than the other one. It still has its screw in place for the adjuster hole. I'm going to go back next week and maybe buy an extra set of vintage mags. You never know what you might need in the future. For some reason he had a lot of American Racing Vectors that no one ever bought back in the 70's (the Dukes of Hazard Charger wheels) in both GM and Mopar bolt patterns.
I was a couple weeks late for the Sun engine analyzer that got tossed out at the dump. He had tried to give it away for years but had no takers. Drats! My buddy and I did get did get a couple of vintage exhaust emission analyzers for free. At least I can set the idle mixture finally set without having to do the old idle drop test. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i3.../P2250005c.jpg |

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
This is so cool. I had showed my 13 yr old grandson a Sun Super Tach like that not 30 min ago! It has been in my tool box for 30 years. He did not know what is was. I do not think my tach requires a sending unit?? I love these posts.

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
I was wondering: does anyone know if this tach requires the sender unit? It is the SST-801. I tried googling that model number and all I seem to find are people with the same question and no exact answer. Any tach experts out there?
|
Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Not an expert, but I thought the 700 and lower series needed the sending units and the 800 series were good for conventional and or transitorized/CD ignitions without a sending unit---I think I have a 802 for the CD unit.........
|
Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Joe's right. The 800 Series was the "electronic" tach, not the "electric" tach. The 800 was the "SuperTach".
Steve, I believe your nos sender was made in '71. The tach you have does not need the sender you have. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gifVerne |
Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Come to think of it, the early Super Tachs that required the sending units were only available as 7k and 9K. And, they were green stripe faces weren't they?
Rats, now I gotta run to the garage and dig mine out again!!!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif |
Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
This is one of those connundrums where you need a definite answer. I wouldn't want to hook it up the worng way and fry the unit, or if I sell it I don't want to steer somebody wrong with the incorret advice. I did see an SST-802 unit on ebay that the guy advertized as one of the first Sun tachs to not need a sending unit.

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Steve,
Unless someone else can satisfy you in the meantime, I can go to an old SUN catalog I have with all the particulars and get back to you tomorrow eve. I don't think any of the "Super Tachs" required a sender, but I can confirm later. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gifVerne If you look at the instructions for the sender, it lists model SST-700. That probably means I was wrong about the SST only being the 800 series, but it looks like all 700 series need the sender, as Joe originally said. The other sender you pictured is (I believe a '70). There's even an ink stamp date on the box for one. |
Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
The very early ones did. I'll run out and grab mine and see what the list numbers are.
Stay tuned! |

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
OK, here's the story. Mine are SST 90's. They also made an SST 70 which was the 7K version. Both are the early Super Tachs with the 270° needle sweep. The easiest way to tell is to remove the tach head from the cup and look at the back of the unit. If it has a black bakelite back and a red metal tag on the bottom, it requires a transmitter. In fact, that's what the tag says........ "requires an EB-9A transmitter", or something to that effect. I'll try to post some photos shortly if this stinkin' computer doesn't crash again!
Steve, For now, the unit in your pictures is the later transistorized style and DOES NOT require a transmitter. This may also explain the difference between the Blue stripe and the Green stripe. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif (Both mine have green stripes.) |

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Here are the original directions from the transmitter. As you can see on the first page it is kind of confusing as it mentions most of the tachs they made at the time, including the SST line.
Oh, and Verne, I'll call the guy and get the racks of speed catalogs for posterity. I would make a good addition for a mock speedshop display for the next convention. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif That's cool! I still have my RC-85 and another EB-9A that I bought for my '57 Chevy back in '65. All of those pieces are back in the original boxes as well. Probably still have the paperwork like Steve posted too.

Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
Steve,
I believe the question has already been answered, so my input would only be repetitive. The only thing I will add is that I believe the very first fully electronic SST tachs used a white needle with the blue line rather than the customary red one (as shown on one of Joe's tachs). I have one dated '64 that way. This one was purchased in '69. And much to SUN's credit, it's still functioning perfectly. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...DSC03050tn.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gifVerne |
Re: Attic find: NOS Sun Super Tach and sender unit!
I put the tach and mounting kit on ebay in case anyone's interested. I'm gonna use the money to buy all of the old vintage speed catalogs in the rack that the guy still has up in his attic.
