Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
Hi Guys,
I have a friend that wants to sell a car that he has had for many years to buy something else. I am looking at buying it, and I have known the car for many years. Being a challenger, I was wondering what you think is fair, he wants to give me a "good deal", but neither one of us wants to screw the other. The car is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T. It is an original Lime Green, Black interior car. Original 4 speed car. It has a rotissorie resto and the body and paint is near perfect. It is not numbers matching, but currently has a 340 in it. As far as needs, it needs the interior finished, carpet, headliner and dash pad. I am going to go over there saturday and get the tag numbers for a decode. If the car is what is above (in the looks dept, it is, just need to check those numbers), then what would you think is a fair price for this car? Running Driving 70 R/T, NOM 340, orig 4 speed, 10 of 10 on body paint, needing interior finished, Lime Green/Black Int, orig wheels. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Thanks! Rich |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
I know someone who just sold an 70 Challenger R/T orange with Black vinyl top and interior, matching numbers but an automatic. Fully restored.
He got $46,000 for it. I hope this helps. |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
This one is NOM, and needs the interior finished. But it is a 4 speed car.
I really need to go and get a pic of the data plate and decode to make sure. Thanks, Rich |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
Do you know what the original engine was?
Also, is the paint code FJ5 or FJ6? |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
if its a small block it isnt an rt std. engine on an rt would be a 383, post the tag info and you can get a good idea of value

Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
seems the 70 Challenger R/Ts are coming out this year. I know of a one owner 70 Challenger R/T 440/6 pak car that was traded in on a new truck last year. Oh the cars owner was the ORG owner https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif Triple black 440 car https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif Soon to be in one of the MOPAR Mags coming to a rack near you https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
On a challerger the vin# is embossed into the dash pad. It does not come out unless there's a new process that I am unaware of. That can cause a lot of head aches if you use a good dash from another car.
That's also correct about it needing to be a 383 or bigger to be an R/T. If it's a 440, 440 6pac, or hemi with a 4 speed, it most likley is a dana. Any of the above could be an 8.3/4 with an auto. This can be misleading as different combos could be ordered although a 383 727 dana was possible, a 440 6 pac 4spd 8 3/4 was not. Ebody mopars are cool. Just remember mopar parts are pretty pricey. Just in passing, the new goodmark challenger fenders are very nice. |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
The original engine size is coded into the first 7 charcters of the VIN.
A friend of mine used to own a 70 440 six pack 4 speed RT challenger convertible, with just about every option possible, from rim blow horn to A/C. He sold it a few years ago and now it is undergoing a full restoration (not that it really needed it). He bought it for 1500 bucks in 1984. |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
The VIN tag on the dash is riveted in, I believe with a 6 sided rivet, not 100% on that though, its been about 12 years since I had a Mopar

You're right about the rivets, but unlike a camaro, or nova, where the vin is part of the metal part of the dash, and doesn't come off with the pad, the vin does come off with the dash pad on the challenger. That forces you to change the vin tag to the used dash. I'm not sure if you can get good replacement rivets, and it does bring out some legal issues. There was a guy from around here who simply swapped out his ratty ol dash pad with a very nice used one. He got pulled over by the Ia. highway patrol, who checked the dash vin to the registration. No match. Car got imponded for three days until he could prove it was legally his, and he got fined. So there is the issue with the Ebody dashes. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
69LM1, You said it needs a dash, like Schonyenko2 said, the VIN tag is riveted to the dash pad, so make sure the old dash is there or he has the VIN tag.
|
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
He said it was a "Big Block", I'll get some pics tomorrow when I go out to see it, and I'll get a pic of the tag. It is supposed to be a real lime green, 4 speed, big block car.

[/ QUOTE ] That might be the reason that the dash is worn, and was not changed when everything else is new? I have not seen the car in a few months, so I am going by memory. I'll know more on saturday! He's had the car for several years, so he and I are going from memory. Rich |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
I bought a 70 Plum Crazy challenger convertible several years ago, at that time I wasn't very familar with those cars then and I called a friend who walked me thru it . It was badged as a R/T but had a 340 in it. The hood and rear exhaust were factory installed so was the 340, what I didn't know about was the A66 code that was the 340 H/P package labeled as the Scat Pack. 340 cars could be ordered with this option giving it the Scooped hood, 14x7 rallye wheels, F-70-17 white letter tires, wheel opening mouding delete, larger radiator, big brakes, H/D suspension and the transverse tail stripe and Scat pack bee decals on the quarter glass giving it the look of an R/T. These cars are are very rare so look for the H vin for a 340 and A66 code on the data plate. My car turned out to be one of a handfull of Plum converts . Just a note that 340 will surpise even the best Big Block , then add a 6 pack and have Fun.

Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
69LM1, first and foremost make sure the VIN matches the # on the radiator support!! friend or no friend, you need to confirm that for yourself!
|
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
the vin on the dash is important (however) the data tags on the inner fender list the complete vin number in the right lower corner, the tags or a build sheet is a must to maintain any real value to the car, galen can make a new vin tag as long as the body numbers (cowl, radiator support, trunk seal area,) are the same as the body tag or build sheet, the vin rivits are also avail (roset style) i know a guy who has a coffee can full of these from a chrysler assembly plant, 30.00 a pair i think,

That's why I am driving out there tomarrow am. With the camera. It's no fire sale, and not advertised, and he is a very close family friend. At some point, I will probably flip the car, which is why I want to make sure that the price is fair for him. Of course, I told him this as well, he wanted to practically give me the car at 14,000.00 prior to that. He's now saying 17,000.00. Who knows? Once I drive it, I may keep it! Sure is nice that everything can be decoded. I did talk to him a few hours ago and he stated that it does have the original Dana rear end in it. Rich |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
That was a killer package. Kinda like L79 novas. The one we had in the neighborhood would eat a stock GTX.
|
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
if it has a dana originally it would have to be a 440 4brl or six pack or hemi, look for a skid plate on the k member to protect the deep oil pan, a 4 speed 383 would have an 8 3/4 rear this must be a u v os r code car to have a dana, THAT WOULD BE A DEAL OF THE DAY IF THATS THE CASE.

Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
There was a B5 blue 70 cuda that was wrecked with less than 10k miles on it that sat for a very long time outside a business a few towns up US 30. Hit in the back very hard. Bent the frame rails, shoved it all ahead, not pretty. I looked at it a couple of times as it had a dana under it. The guy where it set claimed it was a 383 727 ordered with the drag pak 4.10. It was a column shift, no frills piece. Claimed the guy bought it as a budget street brawler, and was real fast while it lasted. I did not see the fender tag.
I did go check my 70 challenger book though, and you are right in that it doesn't show it being offered for a 383. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Is it possible it was a special order? |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
NO GO with the 383 the lowest poss. gear was the 3:91 8 3/4 it was called the (high performance axle package) the only way you could get a lower gear was to order a bigger engine.it was quickly discovered that a b-body dana was like 2 inches narrower than the e-body so alot of people put the b-body dana in the cuda challenger body so they could run a bigger tire under the factory wheel houses. but i would be willing to bet the fender tag would have proved the car to be a v or r code..

Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
Ok. That is the only one I ever saw like that, so you're probably right about the guy not knowing it had been replaced.
You're right too about the length on those danas, and how well they fit under Ebodys. Mine was a 440 4spd super drag pac 4.10. Somewhere in it's life the rear was replaced with a b body short dana. And yes, there's room for big tires. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif 70 challenger R/T S/E 440 mag A833 4spd dana 3.55 hemi orange/blk vinyl top. |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
OK,
Here's the scoop. Real RT car, 383 Orig, real 4 speed car orig, but was brown with white int originally. Here are some pics. The Tag was in his attick, and he's gong to get it down. It has all of the chrome, and other misc parts. He was going to put after market gauges in it, which you can see in the pics. It has the big block radiator that some of you told me to look for. It also has some sort of adjustable rear wing option. He is going to get the tag and dash pad out of his attick this week. The tag on the 70 challengers is held on with screws. He says that the VINs on the tag, dash and all parts match. Still deciding, it is a little more of a project than I remembered, but paint and mechanicals are done. It has had a floor replacement, LH fender replacement, and Toe Boards replaced. http://www.69lm1.com/70rt/rhside.jpg http://www.69lm1.com/70rt/int.jpg http://www.69lm1.com/70rt/rear.jpg http://www.69lm1.com/70rt/hood.jpg http://www.69lm1.com/70rt/enbay.jpg http://www.69lm1.com/70rt/wing.jpg |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
Check to see if the original pistol grip shifter is still around. You can get them rebuilt good as new.
That would be a go wing. Hemibee, were they factory, or dealer installed. I was thinking dealer. I can't tell for sure, but there should be cut outs on the tailpan for the exhaust tips. (pricey) |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
The tan (FT5, I think?) is pretty rare on these cars. The tag will be helpful because there's plenty of rare trim options available, like the stripe. As-is, it has a '71 stripe. Looking forward to seeing what you find out . . .

Mopar value is a function of motor, color, transmission (prefer 4spd), options (esp shaker hood with e-body), and drivetrain being original to car. Original fender tag and buildsheet essential. Here is a '70 Challenger R/T 440 6pk Super Trac Pac(4.10), Go Mango, 4spd, rear wing, shaker, alligator skin roof, born with drivetrain, and all coded for on buildsheet and fender tag.

OK,
First, Thanks Guys! Looks like my brother (Joe) really wants this car. He is on this site, and has a 69 Camaro as well. It stays in the family. We will make sure and send some pics of the tag when it comes out of the attick. |
Re: Help w/ Value 70 Challenger R/T
love that car DREEMZ put a price on that one for me. the go wing was a factory option, it also came with front chin spoilers in 71. personally this 70 challenger needs alot of work, 71 stripes, wrong color the seats are 72-74 the tail lamp bezels arent cheap, i would put a list together and see what your finished car investment is going to be and compare to the finished value. just my 2 cents
