1970 chevelle & el camino's
Does any one have any idea how many hugger orange 1970 Chevelle's and El Camino's were made ?Just curious, there's a 70 Chevelle in town that I always wondered how rare it was? Thx

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Noone can say for sure, not even Chevrolet or Fisher Body knows.
Paperwork is key on this color, also known as Monaco Orange on Chevelles/Elcos as the cowl could show - - and that could stand for a few select colors too. There's a few on Team Chevelle withem, and that also includes Non Super Sports as well. |
Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
If it was built at Van Nuys it most ikely would have the actual Dupont paint code in place of the - - on the cowl tag. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
What was the orange on the 69 GTO Judge called and is it the same as the Monaco orange special order paint on the 70 Chevelles?
|
Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Cool subject...
Are there known genuine special paint tags showing some Dupont numbers used in place of standard colors or the '--' examples someone can show or PM me?. I'm not specific to any plant or car line and a pic isn't necessary either...more interested in real examples of Dupont or other numbers known used on tags in special paint situations by Fisher Body plants during the glory years.. Just a break in the action...back to the pond hockey and sno-machines w/ the kids!. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
The "Orange" color for 69 Judge's was Carousel Red, don't think it is the same shade as Monaco Orange. Another Pontiac color I always thought was strange was Orbit Orange, which is actually a Yellow color. I think it is a 1970 color though.

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
There is an LS6 Chevelle that I owned for about one week two years ago and on the build sheet written by hand has Solid 926-99539 Red A.L- White D88 Stripes. on the trim tag it has -- for paint code. Is the 926-99539 the paint code? If it is can anyone look up what they call that color?
|
Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Carousel Red and Hugger Orange/Monaco Orange are the same.
Orbit Orange from 1970 is another color. Carousel Red was only available on the Firebird in 1970. There also are no records of how many Chevys were built with this color, but for 1970 it's rare for the Chevelle as it was a special-order color and not RPO, I believe. |
Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Yea , that's what I've noticed before was that the cowl tags typically had the -- or a long 8 digit number there as well. I agree and would think too that it would be a very small percentage of cars with that paint as it was a special order paint for 1970 , I think a Camaro code isn't it?

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
For some reason I've never liked Monoco Orange on a 70 Chevelle, I love it on a 69 but it just doesn't look right on a 70(to me). Might be due to the white stripes??? Sorry if I've offended anyone with a 70 Chevelle that's Monoco Orange. I've only seen a couple as they are rare.

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Quote from personal correspondence last year with Jim Mattison, who worked for GM on fleet & special order stuff:
"I do remember that we painted quite a number of 1970 Chevelles with "Hugger Orange" from the 1969 and 1970 Camaros. We also painted a fair number of vehicles with "Omaha Orange", which was originally a color used on many of the trucks that were sold to county governments. However, some of the car folks liked that color also." |

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
I know of at least 2 Monoco Orange LS-6's in the Wisconsin/Minnesota area and 1 or 2 from out state. I believe I have 3 listed in the registry.

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
A guy local to me has a 1970 LS6 that is Monaco Orange.

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
------I have seen a very low mileage (4000ish) Monaco Orange LS6 70 Chevelle in very southern Indiana. Low optioned. Hasnt been out of the original owners garage in over 30 years and is partially disassembled, but never touched with a spray can. Have been loosely trying to buy it for at least 20 years with no luck......yet........Bill S

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Thanks Howard, Rick and all for taking the time to respond and post!.
Sure looks like the 926-#'s refer to the Dupont colors...funny how one is noted on the tag and the other -- when both are refering to a 926 #...different plants?. Anyone have any idea what the "9 FC145C" on my '67 Biscayne tag would denote...the GM Canada documents does show this and lists FC145C (no 9) as Special Custom Color...nothing more (it's black)...again this is the tag that has 'RED TAG RCMP' on it yet no mention of this part in the GM Canada Docs?. And Dave, I always felt similar that orange looked out of place on '70 & up Chevelles too...but I'm starting to feel otherwise especially after seeing that '70 w/ black top and stripes, it looks really great!!!. Happy you're back too Dave...welcome home! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ouguysrock.gif ~ Pete |

Dave, No offence taken...after all this is your opinion. I happen to like it on a 70 Chevelle, but only when stripe delete. Dan. |
Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Ever hear of one called "Funk Orange"?
I have a buildsheet copy for a 70 LS6 that calls out that color. |

Re: 1970 chevelle & el camino's
Rick
It does carry the typical Fleet & Special Order/bypass codes as others, and I would imagine "Funk" is probably Monaco/Hugger Orange based on other Kansas Built Chevelles with the same color. Other special order paint colors have been found with "dumbed" down names on their original paperwork in the past as opposed to their "Official" Chevrolet given name. That special 1001PA code is a fleet order code charge of $25.00 when ordered in bulk, and have been known to go as high as $150.00 when solo. Because of this, there's a good chance there were many other vehicles shipped to this same selling dealership with that same "Funk" paint color.Special Order Paint vehicles also received a touch up container of their special paint color in the glovebox upon delivery too. |
