No Guns at the Post Office Please...

Dropped off the mail today (that was before the training session https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif) and saw an interesting sign on the post office wall.....you can't possess a firearm on "postal property". As a licensed hand gun owner in NY I was shocked...while I can understand that some nut could burst thru the post office door and shoot employees or customers...it seems to me that person could care less about any laws. I plan on stopping back there tomorrow to write down the details from the sign and do some homework...where does "postal property" end?? at the door??.. how about down the street in front of the mailbox??? or in the parking lot?? how about post offices that are located inside stores and malls, etc...don't get the wrong idea, I'm not a gun freak, but I am a law abiding citizen who met all the requirements to have a concealed carry permit. I have taken the proper training and practice very strict firearms safety....I only wish they would enforce the laws that are already on the books, instead of adding more.

The postal workers themselves usually have enough firearms on hand, think they are saying they would like to cut down on excess!!

Wilma,

Yes it makes no sence at all. A criminal who plans to do someone harm is going to break all the laws anyway. Real impact is to legal concealed firearm permit owners, the irony being is that these are the people who can have the first chance to stop the bad guys.

BTW, not sure about other states, but here in Mass it is also illegal to carry a firearm into a school of any kind as well.

Tom,

That's a lot like seeing the sign on the bathroom wall
telling all employees to wash before leaving the restroom. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

The post office is just reminding employees that they can't
shoot each other..... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: No Guns at the Post Office Please...

Probably a poor choice of words....some folks see gun owners as being extreme and gun ownership as unnecessary. So, let me re-phrase to clarify: Our right to self defense and lawful use of firearms is the single most important personal freedom to me. All other "rights" are secondary...when the gov't restricts or denies private citizens the right to bear arms, we are lambs to slaughter. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for Pelosi and the "new gang" to start going after our guns. Well then, I really am a "gun freak", because I freak out anytime someone tries to limit my personal freedom and my ability to defend my home and loved ones.

The Second Amendment is now in serious jeopardy. If we get a dem pres to go along with Pelosi, Feingold, Waxman,
Schumer, Kennedy, Kerry and their American hating comrades, law abiding citizens will be treated as felons and will become nothing more than unarmed subjects.

All the common man rights are quickly going out the window!!! .
I'm not going to start bashing any specific groups here, but in Canada an immigrant has many different 'rights' than someone who's a 'native'!? .
Take a look at the 'wrapped' hard hats on some job sites now...the rest of us fellers gotta' wear a regular old hard shell ones! .
Try and legaly walk around with a decent size pocket knife and you'll end up in the jailhouse...yet others have the so called rights to carry sinbad style friggin' swords around now??? .

As far as the signs go, they're probably meant for the Post Office workers...helps keep a few less from 'going postal' on the job?! .

Sorry if anyone takes offence to this babble...the statements and opinions above are my own and not affiliated with this website or any person living or dead! .

Re: No Guns at the Post Office Please...

Actually, if you look at the fine print on any application for a carry permit it will have a specific list of areas where the permit is not valid. I recall some of the prohibited locations for Florida permits are schools, government offices, and any establishment that serves alcohol. (I may be redundant here since the latter location probably applies to the two former locations https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif) As for the Post Office, they put that sign there so people are on notice that Federal jurisdiction applies and it wouldnt be a local charge if you were caught carrying on the premises.

I would feel safer with a licensed gun holder buying stamps than I would with a little old lady handing out "Hilliary for Pres" bumper stickers (also illegal on Postal Property)

I don't argue gun control on a car forum (that's what ar15.com is for https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif) but I find it awful hard to believe that any elected American politician at the Federal level doesn't understand why their peers want to see the American populace disarmed. These people have no respect for our money, our freedom or out rights.

Do check out AR15.com if you haven't already. The General Discussion is probably the most interesting site on the Internet for some actual intelligent debate on the whole issue.

Re: No Guns at the Post Office Please...

here's what the sign says:

Possesson of Firearms and Other Dangerous Weapons on Postal Service Property is Prohibited by Law.

Possessing a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a federal facility for other than official purposes, causing such a weapon to be present, or attempting to do so are punishable by a fine, imprisonment for up to 1 year, or both.

If the prohibited weapn is intended to be used to commit a crime, the penalty is an increased fine, imprisonment or up to 5 years, or both.

Title 18 US CODE section 930

No person on US Postal Service Property may carry or store firearms, explosives or other dangerous or deadly weapons, either openly or concealed, except for official purposes.

Title 39, Code of Federal Regulations ection 232.1

Report all Firearm Violations Immediatly to the US Postal Inspection Service

So, there you have it.....and what about that catch all "other dangerous weapons"....I had my jacknife in my pocket while I was there..is that a dangerous weapon??

There are people with the guns and people with the gold. Those with the guns will have all the gold. Support the NRA in there battles. My two cents worth. Larry.

The most heinous crimes ever committed have been by GOVERNMENTS and they were done on an unarmed populous.

I feel that if the government can have rocket launchers then the population should be able to have them as well... otherwise what is there to stop a tyranical government?

I find it very odd that most liberals will argue like mad for the first ammendment, however when it comes to the 2nd most go in the opposite extreme...
Think about this... if we didn't have the 2nd... the 1st wouldn't be around too long! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Every bank in Ohio has a sign about it being illegal to walk in with a gun. Good thing, too. All you need is a pencil to rob a bank. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif
