Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
Holy crap!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif
I just noticed that the exhaust manifolds on my 1969 L-78 Camaro have started to show some lite surface rust. I used Eastwood hi temp cast grey exhaust paint after sandblasting them a few months back. Is powdercoating recommended? I was told it may take the original cast "grain" look away and thus be looked down on at shows. Any other recommendations to combat rusty manifolds?? Thanks. Hey Darrell...send some pics of your Camaro for members rides!
As far as an exhaust mainfold coating...this stuff works well. Calyx |
Re: Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
Send them to Jerry. He has done four pair of manifolds for me the oldest being 5 years old and still lok as good as the day I put them on.I have three more pair there now getting done.

Crap, https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Forgot about Jerry. He did my intake manifold and it turned out awesome. Thanks to all.
Bruce, I plan on getting my info in soon. I have been really busy lately. Now I'm wondering if I should hold off a couple more months because Kenny Pascoe's L-78 is certainly a tough act to follow. Re: Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
I used the Eastwood "brush-on" stuff 3 years ago on mine and they're solid rust now!!!!! And I did know how to properly prep them!
When someone mentions "Eastwood" to me, I immediatly think of a $1.98 can of spray paint for $9.00, ! (plus shipping) ! OK, big deal - they put their own label on it so it cost them about 85 cents..........total. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif |
Re: Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
I gonna get hammered on this one....But..Why all the fuss over rusted manifolds? I have never EVER seen anything but..from day one.I think light rust is more of a factory finish then the cast blasted dipped in gray stay-puff looking manifolds...I'm all for glass beading then throwing them in a media tumbler and then bolting them on and letting nature take it from there...Anyone else https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
Oh yeah...I don't like coated headers on a "Day two" car either..VHT and rust...OlD ScHOoL.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif Steve https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
Steve,
The NCRS guys are all over this subject. Yes, I suspect every new car arrived with lightly rusted exhaust manifolds. Hell, if you glass bead them and leave them out anywhere other than the desert, they will rust almost immediately. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Jerry MacNeish seems to get a lot of notice with the Vette crowd concerning the exhaust manifold treatment. I myself cannot bare to see my exhaust manifolds rusted. So, Jerry will end up doing mine soon. Steve |

Can't beat EMT from D&R, about 21 a can, 7 years and still like new. Craig

Re: Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
I just did a set for a friend's '58 Fulie in this Ground Up Restoration paint... they came out pretty nice for spray can...
Jerry did the manifolds on my '66 Corvette and they're just perfect. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...66/engine4.jpg |

I can't see him doing overspray like that. Actually, I'm not sure he even buys into the whole overspray thing anyway. I've debated this with him before. No way the exhaust manifolds came from Tonawanda without orange overspray. The engines were painted with the exhaust manifolds installed. Personally, I think this one is relatively close to what was actually done on a production basis. BTW, I have an original L-88 exhaust manifold that looks very similar to the one on this image ( overspray-wise ). Steve |

Its tough to get the paint to bond to the manifolds once hot, but the reskining adds additional protection. Jerry did the manifolds before they were painted. |
Re: Combat Rusty Exhaust Manifolds
here are a couple shots of the Fulie exhaust manifolds...
again the coating is from Ground Up Resto for $8 bucks a pop they need a second coat, but its not terrible for spray can http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...12-23-0612.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...12-23-0615.jpg |
