Somebody clue me in. I know nothing about these S.D T/A's and hope someone will take the time to explain the desireability and how rare these cars are for me. It seems that in the past 6 months there have been many post concerning these cars and I want to know what I'm missing. 150K buys alot of mid 60's to 1970 muscle.

This is in no way a comment on the asking price of the car listed...I'm just trying to get an education.

Re: 1973 Brewster Green SD-455 Trans Am Super Duty

Howard, I'll be glad to give you a few insights on the Super Duty. If you'll visit my website, there's a bit more information there, but more importantly, a few links that gives much greater detail on what these cars are.

Originally envisioned to be produced in the summer of '72, the production of the cars were halted, primarily because of failing EPA minimums, and secondly, GM brass (the car was faster than the Corvette). These engines were assembled in the performance shops at Pontiac racing and the Engineers stayed with the engine development, got the EPA to pass the engine in March of '73, and finally, in June of '73, very late in the model year, they began deliveries to dealerships.

However, it was so late in the model year, that only 252 cars were produced.

As the muscle car era was dying off, Pontiac stayed with it, and it turned out to be the fastest American Car produced until the 1984 Corvette.

The Super Duty program lasted one more year, with 900 or so cars being produced in '74, in a new body style. The program was subsequently dropped.

This car is in a One Year Only color, Brewster Green. All TA's prior to '73 were either white or blue. All TA's in 74 and on were either Red, White or Blue, and eventually other colors. There are currently 34 Brewster Green Super Duty's in the SD-455 registry which has been receiving cars since the late 80's.

Pontiacs have a few niche areas of rare cars that are quickly catching the Boss429's and Hemi Cuda's, namely the RAIV equipment, some rare Judges, and the Super Dutys.

The reason there is so little knowledge about them, is there is so few of them, and they rarely turn up for sale. There have been a few White and red cars for sale recently, mostly unrestored. A few '74's as well, but I could not find a Brewster SD car that had sold at auction, or otherwise within the last 5 years to use as a reference for interested parties. I do, however, have knowledge of several private sales in the recent years.

I hope this is helpful information.
Greg

Re: 1973 Brewster Green SD-455 Trans Am Super Duty

69motion, just 252. In '74 there were 943.

The documentation on the Pontiacs is also incredibly solid, as there are micro-fiche records at the Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) that documents every car Pontiac produced. No tank sticker, no worries. No build sheet, no worries!

Keeps there from being more rare cars today, than were actually produced, which can't be said for all makes and models.

Man, that Brewster color is deeeep...love it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif!!! .

Love seeing T/A's w/ these wheels too, soooo not into honeycombs & later snowflakes...were the S-D's shipped minus trim rings like Judges? .

Hard to beat all you get in one of these...and A/C to boot! .
With S-D production so low especially the '73's, the old supply and demand thing should keep these nice 'real cars' solid! .

You are right sir. Only that was a regular 455 4bbl not an SD.

This particular car is awesome: rare color and perfect restoration.

Just for info, a four speed 73 SD T/A in need of restoration sold for $125K two weeks ago http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...em=200053176701 and a nice 73 Formula SD w/auto sold for 65K from the same seller http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pontiac-T...044874476QQrdZ1 . He also sold a 74 SD auto for $75K last month. Legit seller and real sales.

The SD-455 was available in both the Trans Am and the Formula. The Formula, though rarer, does not bring the same $$$ as the T/A. Less snazzy looking though it does have the shaker unit. Four speed cars bring a premium over automatics, though you could not get a/c with a four speed.

There are some people out there who say the 71 and 72 455HO's were faster (especially the people who own them https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif)

Re: 1973 Brewster Green SD-455 Trans Am Super Duty

370454s, your are right, they used up 3 of the Brewster SD cars in the making of McQ. 2 were totalled, and the third survived. Watching the movie closely, reveals shots with the different cars identified by different license plates, and whitewalls vs. raised white letter tires.

Peteleathersac, the color is awesome.

On the trim rings, '73 was the first year that trim rings were standard, vs. optional in previous years. However, it sounds like you agree, the car looks best without them, and that's how I have chosen to keep it. The car does come with 4 NOS trim rings in GM boxes however, if the buyer would like to add them.

Very Nice car. If it's worth 150k Whats a Formula SD-455 worth ??. My buddy bought a 74 Red TA SD-455 and still has it. All Orig. I wonder whats thats worth?

Re: 1973 Brewster Green SD-455 Trans Am Super Duty

The big bumpered 74's lag a great deal behind the more visually attractive 73's in price. The Formulas of either year are behind their respective year T/A prices: although they are rarer, they tend to go for less than the T/As. Here is the link to the 74 SD T/A that was sold a few weeks back for $75K http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=200047704167

1970Bluel78, Vintagemusclecar, thank you for the compliments. The car has been really fluffed.

NJSteve, thanks for providing the information on recent Super Duty Comp's. The car that sold recently at $125K was a '73 White unrestored car, and the $75K was a Blue '74 with a decent restoration, probably a no. 2 driver. As I mentioned though, there has not been a Brewster Green SD Car sold publically in quite some time. Probably because there are so few of them around. In fact, I don't believe any SD car has been for sale in this condition in the recent past.

Greg, what ever happened to your '69 TA? I was after it a couple years ago and you disappeared.
Your '73 is an awesome car. I think 150k may be a bit of a steal. You should have taken to BJ and got "all the money". Good luck with the sale. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...-I-Have-It.gif

Re: 1973 Brewster Green SD-455 Trans Am Super Duty

Denis, Brewster is a name often given to 'British Racing Green'. This car is in a color derived from BRG, so Pontiac named the color Brewster Green. Very similar to other more familiar colors such as Goodwood Green or Lynndale Blue or Riverside Gold. It goes on and on and on...

Charlie Lillard, great looking car. Thanks for posting it so it can be seen with the trim rings on the Rally II's. It seems to give the car a different look.

Southernfriedcj, I had to sell the '69TA to grab this car. It was a 3 way deal, as the individual who referred me to the SD seller bought my car. I had no chance to market it. Sorry about that! If your interested in this car, I promise not to 'disappear' on you! I'm here, but he car won't be for long! Thank you for the compliment on this car!

Bashton, glad this car is in your top 10 to own! It was also highlighted in last month's High Performance Pontiac as one of the top 10 impact cars of all time for Pontiac, in an article written by Jim Wagners.

COPO, thank you!

Charleylillard, that's no problem. A few of the members here have asked about the Super Duty's so it's nice to see a few here while the car is for sale.

By the way, the earthlink website I included in my original post crashed due to high volume, so I've moved many of the pictures over to my www.sd455ta.com website. I did a little housekeeping and upgrading while I was there as well. Thanks to all who have visited the site and for the compliments on the car. It will make someone very happy soon.

Just out of curiousity; in the pictures at the Woodward Dream Cruise I see that the car does not have the large bird decal on the hood. Was the car optioned with the larger decal or did you add it during the resto?

1996Z15, PHS indicates the car was not ordered originally with the big bird. However, as gorgeous as the green/yellow bird is, it had to be added during the restoration.

Xplantdad, thank you, it is an awesome ride, and actually drives with a tight, rattle free ride. The car is sorted out quite nicely.

Re: 1973 Brewster Green SD-455 Trans Am Super Duty

It is a gorgeous car; you don't see many Brewster Green TA's whether they are SD cars or not. My Dad ordered a Buccaneer Red '73 new and ordered the SD motor but the car did not get the engine. He was told at the time that the SD engine could not be guaranteed due to availability.
Either way he got a cool red TA with white interior and 4 speed. I wish I had it today; good luck with the sale. Are you going to be replacing it with something or are you just downsizing a colleection?
