Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
You mean Clill's car?
|
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
I spoke to someone who runs the Camaro Pace Car site (I think), and he told me he wanted an original. He had to get a batch of repops together because he couldn't find an original.
Maybe Charley knows more? |
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
I thought they were put on trucks?
|
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
I honestly do not know Marlin. If its not worth anything than I am going to keep it. The guy I spoke to said he had to reproduce exact copies of my license plate because he could not find an original for him and his pace car buddies. Whether it was a novelty item or original item, I do not know.

I'm not sure, I think I remember mr70 had the inside track on these plates https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
This plate was originally issued in 1968 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chevrolet Truck.
It was a small way for Chevrolet to express their thanks to the Indianapolis plant,as well as pat themselves on the back for 50 years of production. They were not related or meant for the pacecars in anyway. They can still be found, mostly by technicians and employees who hoarded them back then,as they were given out free. I think they were also offered over chevy parts counters then, and they were being reproduced not too long ago too. The one below is a Repop. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1teamplate.jpg |
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
Besides the obvious color differences, I see at least those two are different where the the big 1 meets the bowtie...are the repop ones aluminum? .

Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
Correct on all accounts, and notice the word lettering is different too.

Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
I wouldn't mind a repop one for my Deuce - being as it's an Indy sold car. I need to donate my 'Back our Boys in Vietnam' plate to my Y-Camaro owning 'nam buddy!

There are plenty of original speedway photos that document the usage by the Indy zone on the track cars. Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Phil
Can you post some vintage track pics? I do have some flyers/bulletins somewhere showing what I stated earlier,as well as from talking to others about these plates in the past. What you say does make sense,as the earliest I have found these plates released could've been spring of 67,(INDY 500),to be ready for the 1968 Fall truck release. Maybe they served a dual purpose then? |
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
Rick,
Here is one of the Pictures that I got from the 67 Pace Car Trust. This one was located by Tony H. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...PO/Cnv1483.jpg |
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
The first documented use that I have found on these plates was on the Pace Car replicas.
Actually there is also a Patch that was found on all the hats used by the Pace Car Crew that was also described as a 1968 item. My thoughts are in line with other collectors that feel since the Activities that Chevrolet was handling for the Pace Cars were supposed to be the cutting edge at the time, that Chevrolet used a number of things at the 1967 Activities that most originally thought were known as 1968 items. |

I'm also the guy that decided to reproduce these plates!!! No way that they are exact to the originals but they do look very nice hanging under your bumper.

Here is the hat. [/ QUOTE ] Goofy question maybe, but who's the guy in the red hat and is he the same guy driving the Hurst Olds Pacer in this 1972 event pic...or was the hat passed around or what? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif . http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=ht...6lr%3D%26sa%3DG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif ~ Pete |

That red hat is killer! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
The man wearing the red had is Harlan Fengler. He was a veteran of the board tracks in the 20's and drove in the 1923 "500" finishing 16th. He was Chief Steward of the "500" from 1958 to 1974.

Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
There are also plenty of pics of Harlan in that hat driving my Pace car.

Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
Reading online, it appears Harlan was one of the original co-founders of CRAGAR!
That hat's done a lot of laps...here's Harlan and the hat at the '63 race! . http://www.indy500.com/photo/large.p...s_id=1&o=h Here's to you Harlan! . https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
Charley!
Any truth to the rumor that you found that hat in the trunk of #92? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: 1967 Camaro Indy Pace Car License plate
I wish..... I am assuming Harlan is no longer with us but I wonder if his family has the hat ? Would be neat to have.

I'm pretty sure he is gone. I tried to find him for an interview.
Here is another shot! His hat is as red as AJ's! |
