I know this one is difficult but looking for any reasonable guesses...

Darren I do not think that is where the cast date is that usually says pass there. The date is on the other side

That looks like 'HI PERF' not a casting date.

LOL!! Of course it is "Hi Perf". There is nothing on the other side. How do I know what the casting date of this CE block.

Hey Darren, what heads are on the engine? Are they the 291's and are they dated for the car or are they 72 dated heads? Just curious if it was a complete CE engine or just a short block.

This motor has 291s that are cast for July of 70. Not matched to this block.

Darren, I agree, it looks like 'HIPER'. It might be easier to read if you removed all the paint. Does it have 4 bolt mains and the extra plug above the oil filter?

Its "HI PER" ..from the looks of it[unless its the photo], id say the odds are it was added by someone. Nothing is straight and the thinness of some of the letters reminds me of many welded and epoxied dates and casting #s ive seen .

Is the date on the passenger side of the block by the freeze plugs?

Yes, early big blocks had the casting date on the passenger side by the engine mount.
