68 camaro muncie shifter

I spent 250.00 Canadian for a muncie repro shifter
against my better judgement, because I wanted to continue
with restoring the camaro to origianl. Well the shifter went in real nice adjusted the rods carefully. Drove it for the first time around the block half way back it jamed up on me Just like the old days. Got it home in 3rd gear
put it on the hoist unjamed the shifter reset it again
to make sure it was not the adjustment. Drove the car again around the block and---- It jammed again. Went to the local speed shop
and ordered a hurst for the car.
After 30 years or so the memory forgets what those shifters were like https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Re: 68 camaro muncie shifter

The original owner of our SS396 Chevelle didn't take long to install the Hurst Competition Plus that is still in the car to this day. The shifter in the Chevelle that we bought new broke early on and it was also replaced with a Competition Plus as well. It will be in the car again when we get it on the road after more that 175K miles the first time around. A friend's COPO Chevelle also got a Hurst early in its life. I don't know anyone who had any kind of luck with the Muncie shifter. I guess that they should have let Hurst design the repro Muncie.

Seems to me that I saw a "combination shifter" somewhere
recently ( possibly NPD ) that featured a Hurst body &
lingage setup coupled with a special Muncie chrome handle.
I guess this is the best of both worlds.

when you get the hurst wack the Muncie handle off, groove the handle base, drill two holes, bolt on... and now your gonna look cool and grab gears all at the same time... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: 68 camaro muncie shifter

You need to just make your own combo shifter..get a Hurst Competition Plus and a donor Muncie unit....we cut the grooved end off a Hurst handle and the weld it onto the Muncie handle. Once it is inside the boot you can't tell the difference, except that it doesn't jam!!

I have an original '67 Muncie that was rebuilt/restored by Jerry MacNeish that I was going to use in my '67 Z. I'm going to drive the car, so are you all suggesting ditching it for a Hurst? Anyone out there with one of Jerry's rebuilds that are happy with it in a car that gets driven???

On our 396 car, I cut, drilled, and mounted a Muncie handle to the Hurst shifter. Works like a Hurst and Looks like a Muncie. Some of the old time guys must wonder why it shifts so well.

The 70 Nova I bought new had a factory floor mounted Muncie 3 speed shifter....only owned the car for 6 months, but I never missed a gear in it. On the other hand, every car I ever drove with a Muncie 4 speed shifter, I could never hit a gear https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Mark...For what it's worth, the only thing that is not factory in my 68 Z28 is the Muncie shifter. I installed a Hurst CP. World of difference.

Re: 68 camaro muncie shifter

Thanks guys. There's a Hurst shifter in the car right now, so I guess I'll find another Muncie handle and make the mod, then sell the restored shifter that I was saving for the car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

what kind of hurst shifter did you install on your car
Do you have a council.

Re: 68 camaro muncie shifter

speaking of Hurst Shifters. I just ordered a Hurst shifter
for my 68 Camaro with council.Canadian Tire sold it to me
for a m22 muncie trans for 276.00 complete assembly. The shifter number is #5030030. They screwd up my first order
by ordering a muncie shifter #3914339. So my question is
is there a difference in shifters if you have a m22 VS m21
as far as Hurst shifters.

Re: 68 camaro muncie shifter

391 4339 is correct for 67-68 Camaro. It should have handle 4106. The shifter might be stamped 4340, this is the number for the shifter without a handle. The installation kit is 373 4529. It's what I have in my 68 Camaro with Muncie and console. I plan on making a new handle in the future. I have a really messed up MUNCIE handle to use.

Mark...Just my opinion, but the HCP from the 70's "feel" better than the ones they make now. The one in the Chevelle is from 1970, the one in the Camaro is about 5 years old. The 70 shifter is much tighter feeling. Is there anyone around you that has a newer one to compare your old one to? Hurst will also rebuild the one you have.
