A few monsoon pics!

Welcome to Arizona...land of ever changing weather! On Monday we had a high in our neighborhood of 120 degrees...yea! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Tonight, the monsoons fired up...

Here's the calm before the storm. It's the one really cool thing about living here. This is the norm!

Re: A few monsoon pics!

........and what ever you do, heed the warnings about NOT parking in the dips in the road. Flash floods in the middle of the desert are deadly! If you have ever heard and then witnessed a 10' wall of water rushing down a wash in the middle of the desert, you will have a new found appreciation for them! I laughed at my brother when he warned me about them. I am no longer laughing. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

Re: A few monsoon pics!

The storm lasted until 4am this morning(AZ time).

In certain areas, washes were overflowing (Chandler, Glibert, Mesa) power lines and trees are down everywhere https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

Rick is right about the washes. There are a few deaths every year in this area...from people who don't heed the warnings https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

See Pete!

You had to ruin the moment for everyone!

Actually, that was a very funny observation. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: A few monsoon pics!

Rick,

I've heard about that flash flood phenomenon before, but I
have no frame of reference. Coming from PA & NJ, it's not
something we see there. What kind of warning ( time-wise )
do you get? Really, a ten foot wall of water?! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Re: A few monsoon pics!

The warning that I got from my brother was if you were in the desert and you saw rain in the mountains (like the picture below) to be on guard. You do not know you are in danger until you see a lot of bird movement, dust and a roar. Shortly after that, you are hit with quite literally a wall of water. I saw this first hand. There are many low lying areas in the desert that appear as nothing more than washouts. The water comes off the mountain sides and runs down these washouts. It will take anything and everything in it's path. Really weird and the signs along the road warning you not to stop really do exist.

Great shot! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif We used to backpack in the mountains of NE New Mexico and I saw this first-hand many times. We were camped at 10,200 feet one evening and watched a lightning show below us. If you haven't experienced mountain storms, you really can't understand. They move amazingly fast.

Re: A few monsoon pics!

Nice flying weather there Bruce! Seriously, I love the sound of thunder close by and cloud-to-ground lightning. I remember being out on my mountain bike when I was based in Del Rio, Texas back in 1995. I stopped to watch a similar thunderstorm system as it moved in toward town from the west. All of a sudden: CRACK!!! A half-second later: BOOOOOM!!!! A lightning bolt had hit the ground maybe 100 yards behind me and some of the electrical charge arced between my bike frame and my leg! YOW! It felt like someone had jammed a needle into the inside of my thigh. I pedaled my a$$ off and got back inside ASAP. Then all he!! broke loose as the storm moved in overhead. Still, I miss the big boomers like that!

As Mark Twain once wrote....." Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work."
