DIT - Damage in Transit...paperwork for someone?
Back in my days of working at car dealerships I'd sometimes get stuck with the job of checking in the arriving transport loads of new vehicles. . I disliked this job as the transport driver was never happy if you found something damaged also a bunch of D.I.T. paperwork would be your reward? . It was often easier to let small things go and let someone else find it later? .
Anyway, reading today's news of the ship in peril loaded w/ 5000 Japper cars heading for Canada made me think....somewhere some 'lucky' fella is hoping the ship doesn't make it to port? . ~ Pete http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14012560/ |

5000 cars would represent about a weeks production for any one plant in Japan, maybe 10 days. sending these cars to Davey Jones locer means increased demand to replace them. It like selling a 5000 unit fleet to the insurance comapny.
If the ship can be saved, the 5000 cars become scrap and come back next year as something else, maybe even a Dynacorn Camaro Body. Another shipping accident a few years ago saw a boatload of BMW and Audi go down off of one of the Scandenavian Countries. Another shipwreck off the BC coast in 1972 had 300 new autos, dont know if there were any rare Camaros or Corvettes, shipment was heading for Alaska. any scuba divers among the group? |

Strangely enough, the anniversary of the Andrea-Doria collision/sinking was July 25/26 yesterday or today's date in 1956? .
Included in it's cargo hold was some big $ experimental-prototype Chrysler cars built in Europe by Ghia or one of the other custom houses? . I remember reading this in the 70's in a Cars & Parts article I think it was but have never read any more again or searched for more info. . Doubt there's much left them now? . ~ Pete |
Re: DIT - Damage in Transit...paperwork for someone?
It was the Chrylser Norseman showcar that was lost in the Andrea Doria.

My labor union unloads the Mazdas in Tacoma,WA (as well as other brands) I have been aboard those multi decked packed in car ships many time driving the cars off.....Even with misc strapping holding the cars from movng fore and aft.....
in the ships current position, it surely must be a mess inside that ship........ |

Wasn't there more special cars onboard too? . Should've remembered that Norseman name being the same as the bush plane....using that old aluminum cookware gets me again? . ~ Pete |

The Chrysler Turbine prototype was also lost. It had a sort of Batman-like tailpipe coming out the back, for the turbines exhuast.
