"360 HP For Chevy II"

From the March, 1962 Hot Rod (before Chevy offered the V8 in the Chevy II).

"Just go to your local Chevrolet dealer and pick up a parts kit to drop a high horsepower V8 into the lightweight Chevy II chassis."

A lot of that is the same pics I recall too but I think this is much more extensive than what I had ever read? .
Interesting how the parts were being made by GM including the block w/ recessed filter but they claim no plans for factory installations? . I don't see any mention of the unique bellhousing? .
Great stuff Bill! .

Nope! I gotta' take breaks and post cool old car magazine stuff or I'd go crazy! I'll be done studying at 0130 on Saurday morning when my checkride is complete. Then it's hurry-up and sleep fast so I can take my son and his buddy to the Northwest Nationals on Saturday. He's never seen/heard fuel cars (6 yrs old) so it should be a good time. Yep, got the ear protectors for the boys.

Back to the books! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

-----Thats at least one of the articles I was thinking of. Great cars, those little monsters!!! I still have another article in mind on the same cars that referred to the project car as "Bad Bascomb" but it was a bit lighter in nature. I know I read it, I really do. Usually I just forget things. I dont just arbitrarily come up with this stuff. I was sure it was "Hot Rod" as well, but maybe not. I wonder if Hot Rod did a follow up article because everybody showed so much interest???.........Bill S

From So Cal in 1970 came the Bad Bascomb's Ghost Nova flopper of Bill Bradford. The Fletcher chassised, Rat milled car was run from 68-70. Bill Bradford, Sr., owned the car, Bill Bradford, Jr., drove the car and brother Rick made up the crew in 1970. Name came from a character in an old Wallace Berry western movie... bank robber Bad Bascomb. The ghost part came when Bradford beat Big John Mazmanian at Irwindale, CA after a magazine writer made the statement the team "didn't have a ghost of a chance." Car was sold after the 70 season when, in Bill Bradford, Jr. words the team "stopped racing due to expense of building grenade motors to compete. Didn't have large enough sponsors at that time and had to finance the majority of the racing ourselves." Teams biggest win came at the Gold Cup Championship at Irwindale in 1969. It's always been my belief that those cars were what grew to be the urban ledgend of the "corvette motored novas" in the later model novas ie; the L79s, and even to a certain extent, the deuces.

bbdon,,,,,,,Thank you so much. I knew I wasnt crazy. Really, I did. I want to find that car. Please help. I know there are Yenko Novas and there are 396/375 Novas and all manner of humungous engine Novas but "Bad Bascom(b)" is the baddest of the bad and I would sell my house to get it in the same condition as in the article. Thanks again!!!!!........Bill S

Re: "360 HP For Chevy II"

Bill, I agree that Bad Bascom was the baddest of the bad. I had always thought that Dick Harrell ended up with this car eventually with a Z-11 motor and conventional rear axle and was crashed in 1965. I'm not sure if this is the same car that sat behind the gas station St. Louis or not. Anyway, could you imagine watching this car leave the line with its ass squatting down with that Corvette IRS. Too cool!

Re: "360 HP For Chevy II"

So Bad Bascom could be what became the 'Retribution' car w/ the Z-11?
Tooo coool!
Retribution underhood pictures exist....anyone got some?

This one may be earlier. Different paint and lettering. Bill Thomas certainly did make a big contribution to this car.

Rollbar looks the same as Bad Bascom and it's got the same molded front end.......

Here's another Saturn V launch. Definitely the same roll bar. Notice the S&S Headers lettering was removed at this time.

------"Retribution", huh? I must have been living under a rock as I dont remember that ChevyII. It looks as though they moved the solid rear axle all over the place.
------I guess you would call that roll-bar a five point,,,LOL!!!.......Well,,, Im bummed, although the car did seem to have an illustrious career. Cant blame them for using what they had and not starting over from zero. Ive done that myself. I guess Bad Bascom(b) will have to live on in our memories. I know it will in mine now that you guys have dug up all this info on it. I cant thank you enough.......Bill S

Bill, actually it may have been only a 3-point roll bar. 2 uprights and one diagonal behind the driver. That's all NHRA required as late as '70 in my D/MP convertible. (don't know about AHRA).
Early FX cars didn't require a bar at all (or a helmit or seatbelts)

Re: "360 HP For Chevy II"

Verne,,,You are right about the bar. When I got Red Alert out of mothballs in 1990 it had never had any kind of roll-bar or even so much as a driveshaft-strap, and when Bob held the record he was turning 10.90s with a best of 10.75............Bill S

Hey Verne, speaking of SOUND, we're 10 minutes from heading out the door to the Shuck's Nationals at Pacific Raceways (Seattle). I'm taking my 6-year old son and his friend to see their first fuel show. Yep, got the ear protectors for the boys. I can't wait to see them react when they hear a fuel car fire up. SOUND and FURY!!!

Re: "360 HP For Chevy II"

Bill,
I guess I started racing the '62 under '69 NHRA rules. /MP required that 3 point bar in convertibles (no bar in hardtops), with a head restraint attached to the bar, a driveshaft loop, an engine safety support strap (which was just a wire loop under the back of the engine), an approved 4-point harness and a coolant overflow can.

That was it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Great photos fellas! .

Nice engine shot Verne....being a W, I suppose we should have expected you'd have this? .

I love that color shot of the Retribution II car too! .

Seeing the side chrome is gone in some pics I'd expect these would be the later shots....removed for lettering? .

Re: "360 HP For Chevy II"

Years ago when I had a 1962 Chevy II, I asked GM Nordiska AB here in Sweden if I was allowed to put a V8 in it and run it on the street. Their reply was that a 360 hp 327 cui engine was the biggest they would allow in a 62-64 Chevy II,with certain modifications made.
I later used that document to register a 1964 2dr sedan with a tunnelrammed 302. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
