Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

Back in January I was given a lead on this car by Dan Palchanes. I purchased it as it had many obvious copo traits, but after closer inspection, comparing the vin/body # to other X 11 Yenkos & talking to other site members I thought it could be a Yenko.
The car is not listed on the sYc, but I'm hoping that by bringing it up for discussion someone may have additional information or documentation that may be helpful to me. It is listed on Ed's copo.com database.
I've also asked Bruce to post a few pics so that you can see it the way I found it.
It has: 140 speedo, date correct/orig BE rear, multi leafs, tach mounting holes in dash, hole punched thru the firewall, SW sender holes in firewall/rt side of cowl tag, exhaust frame plate hangers, sgl 3/8 fuel line, hole in accelerator arm, heavy duty torsion rods for spoiler trunk, date is 03B. It's also a column shift automatic, which according to Warren D. was certainly possible.
It's missing the curve neck radiator, HD sway bar, orig engine & CX tranny. It was a drag car & the front brakes were converted to drum.
With the help of camaromb, kurtS, copo & mark K. I was able to identify (8) X-11 cars & this car's body # falls, pretty much, right in the middle of them.
Many thanks to the site members that have already helped me & to Ed for the certification and to Dan P. for the hook up. If any one has any additional info on this car(9N616128) or 9N616828 I'd appreciate it very much. I also appreciate the opportunity to post this info as I expect it to be somewhat contreversial. Thanks Tom & Rob https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

why would someone want drum brakes for drag racing?? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

i took my drums off and went to disc.........very interesting

I saw this car the day Jude brought it home and knew instantly it was a Yenko. No question in my mind it is the real deal. Just goes to show when you think everyone has been found, another one is uncovered so keep looking.

In regards to disc brakes being converted to drums. This is/was extremely common on drag cars. My 300 mile 69 Z-28 was a drag car from day one and has drums up front. Discs always have some drag, where as drums roll without dragging making the car just a bit quicker.

The discs drag... the pads lay against the disc and the shoes in drums fully retract from the drum... less drag or so it was thought back in the day.

Jude, many members here know much more than I do about Yenkos...
but you showed photographic evidence as found and all the pieces fit the puzzle right.

Looks like a Yenko to me!

The auto on the column brings up a question I have always wondered, how many of the '69 Yenko Camaros that came with an automatic were switched over to a Hurst Dualgate shifter?...

Fred,
I had always thought the all the automatics were converted to floor shift. There's no floor shift hole in this one though. Seems odd for sure https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif.

The plan is to keep this one unless I can find an HO automatic(or an RG auto). If you can convince John to give me his https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif, then I'll give you this one. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
I'd also like to find a 512 MO code block & CX trans from somebody out there. Leads appreciated/ referral fee paid https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

I get asked about this car from time to time and have been told by a couple of sYc members that it was a Yenko sold through Jack Douglas and that Jack still has the window sticker for it. Pretty sure it was the only Fathom Green with X-11, Z23 interior built Yenko.
It is on the list as N616828, but the real vin is 616128 and it was sold

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

I'm pretty sure I pulled a CX tranny out of a 69 Camaro last year which is still sitting in our shop. You may want to call Bob Harris about it, it is unrestored.

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

Sorry guys, but the original thread is 5 yrs old and the car has been sold.
The reason I revived it is because a couple of sYc members told me that they have seen original window sticker and Jack D still has it in his possession... confirming it's provenance as a Yenko Camaro with the vin N616128. Sorry for the confusion

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

Jude - Just so that we can keep the list up to date. Does this mean that there was a typo and 616828 should not be on the list? or is this an additional car that should be added to the list? Also, if you know, has the documentation caught up with the current car owner?

NovaMob03 12-09-2011 11:27 PM

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

When I had the car a friend ran the NICB for 616828 and it came back that the selling dealer was in Jackson MS with no connection to Yenko.
I have never seen Donna Mae's handwritten inventory sheet with 616828 on it, but since we know that's how the current list was derived it's probably there and I believe it's a typo & not an add'l car. Ed C also agreed with that when he certified it.
I know that a lot of time & effort, by Tom & Marlin & others, went into providing us with the list and understand why it might not be changed, but the window sticker should, in time, validate 616128 in the place of 616828.
I did not learn the the document existed until after the car was gone or I would have bought it from Jack. I heard that it was offered to the new owner, but believe price may have been a factor & it didn't happen...maybe they've worked it out by now.

I also believe that the primary vision of this site is to share information about these cars and hope that members see the information as helpful as it was intended. We should all be glad that Tom provided us with this venue and the lists to enhance the Supercar hobby.

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

Keeping a registry and or documenting cars is much easier said than done.

The sYc has done the best job imaginable based on my opinion and what I have experienced with other registries.

Regular Camaro VIN number 616828 was offered up for sale on eBay a few years back. The Camaro was inspected as It was thought to be a real Yenko, since it was listed on the inventory sheets. There were no COPO identifiers on the Camaro and the Color as well as the trim tag number did not correspond to Yenko records and other documented Yenko Camaros.

Jack Douglass called me to inquire about the Yenko he sold,VIN 616128 as one of his former employees had found the original Yenko window sticker. Jack told me that he had seen it in person and believed it to be original.

I have never seen the original, nor do I know if they were reunited at this point in time.

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

Stefano, you may be thinking of N615016 that's on the list as 'the Clyde Krug Yenko'. I know that one was on ebay and inspected. The actual vin# being N615076 and it has been corrected with an addendum to the list

The bdy #'s for N615076 and N616128 are 7 digits apart, both X-11 with Z23 interior's

You got that right!!

A notation error is one of the hardest things to prove, yet so many folks think its so easy. If Donna Mae and/or GM made an error, it is very hard to prove the error - and - prove the correction. It takes quite the burden of proof, and like Stefano says - registries are much easier said than done.

Re: Yenko found?( or just an interesting Camaro)

615076 vs 615016, Notation in Registry

616128 vs 616828, Jack Douglass Window Sticker?

Now I've got them straight, I think?
