Right place at the right time.
I happened to be at the right place at the right time last month. We were meeting in San Antonio preparing for the NCRS Nationals that will be held there in August when one of the other Texas NCRS members handed me a few pages of written information and pictures on the 1965 Corvette coupe he ordered new when he was in college. I know Ken and his car from NCRS and he explained that at 62 he had done everything he could do with his little red coupe and he was ready to pass it on to a new owner. He hoped I may know of someone that may be a good owner. I told him, "I'd be a good owner". Ken and Vicki ordered this car on 12-31-64 and they picked it up on 3-11-65. He was a college boy and didn't have lots of money to spend, he ordered a red with red/white interior 327/300 horse four speed coupe. Since whitewalls were $31, he didn't want them, he did order a radio and posi traction. In the early 80's, he restored the car and campaigned it to Bloomington and many NCRS Regional and National events. The car was awarded a Gold Certificate at Bloomington, NCRS PV and Dontov award, NCRS Founders award and many, many Top Flight awards.
Ken kept everything from the window sticker to warranty book and canceled checks and finance agreements. He sold the car with a set of original 1965 dated tires for show and an original off road exhaust system he put on the car in 1982. I finally picked up the car on Sunday, between Ken's schedule and mine, this was the first weekend we could get together. I was scared he'd get cold feet, but he kept his word and we loaded up the car in Dallas and I hauled it back to Austin. Truly an amazing car that I plan to drive on some road tours. Vicki was there taking pictures of the whole event, she said it was the prettiest car she had ever seen. |
Re: Right place at the right time.
Wow, congrats....sounds like a dream come true! . Any pics you can share? . A few of your '64 race car would be nice too, is it a coupe also...& J56? .

Re: Right place at the right time.
Pete, the '64 won June Sprints with Bill Morrison at the helm in 1967. Colin will be wheel to wheel with him in about one week at Road America. It won the 1968 June Sprints with Dave Rex at the helm. Dave was scheduled to be at the Road America vintage races this year, but he had to cancel. He's raced a clone to the '64 since the early 80's and we were going to talk about me possibly taking over the racing duties of that car. Bill Morrison still races the 1965 Corvette that broke down the weekend of the 1967 June Sprint. He borrowed the car owned by Dave Rex and went on to win the event setting a course record.

Re: Right place at the right time.
Tim....wow, your car has a nice racing pedigree! . Is it a red roadster? .
Good luck in your turn as wheelman in whatever you run! . https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif ~ Pete |
Re: Right place at the right time.
So where is the pic with Ken handing you the keys in front of the car ?

Re: Right place at the right time.
Yes, it's a red roadster. I put a '67 big block hood with a white stripe on it. I'm realizing I'm more of a polisher instead of a racer. The '65 that Dave Rex races now is a very pretty and period correct car. No flares and not a full roll cage. It looks like they looked in the mid 60's and is a very authentic race car. That's why I like the current car he runs. Old technology and a straight forward car. I'm really no racer and never will be. I'd like to run with the group that runs at Texas World Speedway, they adhere to strict rules about modifications.

Charley, thanks for walking me through the posting process. You were more than patient with someone that's computer illiterate.

Re: Right place at the right time.
Awesome! Those photos make it look like the Monogram plastic model they used to sell - 1/16th scale if I recall correctly. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Right place at the right time.
I was thinking the same thing--this car looks like the BIG (1/8 scale) Monogram '65 Corvette kit from the 1970s. Love the red paint with the red/white interior.

Re: Right place at the right time.
I've had that model in built format on display at home for years. Bought it from a fellow that completed it and built a glass case just for displaying that car. Kind of interesting I have the twin now.
Notice the plastic seat covers still on the seats in the pictures? The car was about five days old. He took a roll of shots when new. |
Re: Right place at the right time.
OK Tim........does that mean the red / red 66 vert is now going to be for sale?
|
Re: Right place at the right time.
Jim, I don't know yet. I will have the '66 in San Antonio for Flight judging at the Nationals, though.

Re: Right place at the right time.
-------Tim, Very nice 65. From what I hear a couple of L88s will be missing in San Antonio. Keep your eyes open for roving process-servers as well. Sorry, guys, inside joke that Tim is very likely aware of........Bill S

Re: Right place at the right time.
Great story and beautiful car, Tim https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif One question, though - I see from the window sticker that the 300 hp 327 was an option??? What was standard, the 250 hp? I would have thought the 300 hp was the base engine in the Vette https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif
|
Re: Right place at the right time.
Thanks, Guys. The base motor in '65 was the 250 horse. Remember the Road and Track with the red roadster on the cover and the "5 for 65" license plate on it? GM had five 327 engines, 250, 300, 350, 365 and 375. They brought on the 425/396 later on.
Bill, oh yes. I've been to CP's place a few times since the "event". We'll miss those L88's. |
Re: Right place at the right time.
Beautiful coupe Tim! . WOW on the whole story, documents and original pictures! .
Sounds like you're having fun w/ the '64 roadster. . Have you owned it for a bit or purchased it recent times? . ~ Pete |

Hopefully wheel to wheel, not suspension to roof like last year! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif Tim, make sure to track me down when you get to RA. My pit area will be off the access road inside of 14, as always. I am running the black 66 GT350 #51 (still peeling Bill Morrison's fiberglass off my leaf springs in the T/A - LOL) Colin |

Colin, I'll track you down. I saw in-car footage from my friends #14 black Corvette and Bill arrived to the parade late that day. I'm sure everyone will have a good time this year. I remember being on the inside of the pits and the concrete wall prevented me from seeing the actual collision.
As the cars stacked up, I could see them well. Your TA was in full view with it being about five feet in the air. Pete, I no longer own the '64 vintage race car. It may be at RA this year as the owner lives just out of Milwaukee. It would be great to see it again. It was a theft recovery in 1966 and had a '65 front clip on it. They put '65 disc brakes on the car and to avoid any conflicts, they always called it a '65 as it looked like a '65 when it raced. Dave gave me some great photos and a movie of the car at the 1967 Badger 200, a 289 Cobra won the event.
