Pump gas
 

Has anyone, who uses pump fuel, noticed any difference between the various major brands of 93 unleaded, or is all the same quality.

I believe it will vary from region to region as well as time of year...I think I read a report that said there were nearly 100 different blends of gasoline for the US alone?

When I was sixteen, 260 was cheap and plentiful. Times have really changed, wish I could go back for a little while.

Your right Rob, a local distributor told me the same thing. He also advised not to use aviation fuels in land based vehicles. Said it has a whole different additive package and is blended much differently for the 'thinner air' where planes operate.

I have used aviation fuel blended with Sunoco 94 with no problems. I see no differance when blending with racing fuel from the track.

We have a Sunoco down here that sells 110 leaded right at the pumps. It is used by the air boats that run through the everglades. Popular with the gearheads too. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

By comparison it is cheap these days @ $5.25 gal.
the price has been the same for years.

I mix 1/2 *110 &amp; 1/2 *93, and my engines are very happy.

I don't know if there is a difference, buy i try to use Mobil or Shell, had a bad knocking experience at a BP/Amoco. Had only used them, but the quality seemed to lag.

Loads of places to get AV100 low lead, but I don't really like it. I had also heard that AV fuel was not good for the cars.

The key word is that you 'blended' the aviation fuel with land based 94 Mark. The airplane gas has a higher octane number (assuming you used 100 ave fuel) and you probibly wound up with around 97 octane. Good stuff for any street/strip car.

Keep in mind that octane is only a number representing the anti-knock properties of fuel. A higher number will not cause a car to go faster nor develope more horsepower.

What was the octane rating for 260? Anyone remember how much a gal. this was? When burnt, did it have the same lovely aroma as say CAM II?

I believe 105 octane @ 51.9/gal in the 70's.

I thought it was 102 octane, and I remember pumping a dollars worth and cruising all night. In the 60's it was somewhere between $.30 and $.40 per gallon.

In 1969, it was around $.36 a gallon in Detroit.
When I cruised Woodward Av. with my friends, it cost less than $5.00 for a tank of gas, which would take you less than 100 miles. If you were a kid who worked for the minimum wage, $1.50 an hour, that was just over 3 hours wages to cruise on Friday night.

There is a difference. Here in California the gas is oxigenated. Oxigen is added during summer high usage period. Horsepower and mileage are affected.

That is what we have around here as well... 110 Sunoco
It states on the pump "110 Leaded Race Fuel FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY" but at $5.49 / gal....
They are more than happy to take your $$$$$$.

Pete, leaded gas always had a "sweet" smell, I never thought it was unpleasant at all and still don't. Unleaded blends on the other hand smell awful to me...

As to gas prices, I remember buying gas in Iowa in 1970 or 71 for as low as 17 cents a gallon - they used to have "gas wars" between brands!

A couple of days ago, I was at a Torco fuel dealers shop, and he told me that he had customers buying racing fuel simply for the smell that the burnt fuel had. At $7.50- $8.00 per gallon, I find this a fairly expsensive 60's sensoring pleasing experience.

In the summer of '69 (wasn't there a song about that?) a friend and I were leaving Chicago heading to Colorado to vacation. As we drove into Waterloo, IA there was a 'gas war' going on. There were three gas stations at one intersection priced at 18 cents, 17 cents and 16 cents per gallon. We had just tanked up in the previous town at something like 28 cents. I recall at the time wishing we could buy a trailer, cheap, and haul some of that 16 cent fuel with us for the remainder of the trip.

Ah yes.....the gas wars.....Loved them!

I remember pumping 260 into a 69 L78 for a quarter per gallon. Reckon you could say them were the good 'ol days.

I was at Martin, MI for the F.A.S.T. race this last weekend. They boasted of having the cheapest racing fuel in the country-- Torco 110--$4/ gallon -- Torco 112-- $4.50/ gallon. I filled up the race jugs before making the trip back home! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Almost as good as some of our good friends rolling a 55 gallon drum to the pump and saying "fill'er up!" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

As I posted earlier, Torco 110 from my dealer is $400 per 55 gal. drum. I do know that $70 of that cost is for shipping from Wis. or mich.
