List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Looking for original, complete carb restored or not. Need March, April, May, or June build date. Have unrestored, complete, mechanically excellent "GG" (same as subject line) carb dated 4th week of January for trade or will buy yours outright.
Thanks. |

You LS-6 guys make it tough for us L-78 guys to get parts! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
A 70 March 4557 is absolute hen's teeth, extremley rare, have your home equity line of credit ready to go. I have only run across one for sale over the last couple of years because, of course, I need one. I believe March may be the last known production date for 70 4557's, correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck in your search SULLY

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Kinda off topic but what is the significance of the "GG" versus no "GG"

Kinda off topic but what is the significance of the "GG" versus no "GG" John [/ QUOTE ] John- "GG" is a reference to the last 2 characters in this carbs application part no. (whole part no. is 3967477 GG). This no. designates it for a 454/450HP/4spd & 402/375/4spd use. |

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Just got off the phone with Jeff. Only 4557 GG he has is a December carb. Interestingly wrt what Sully said, March is the latest date that Jeff has seen. I know he has seen a few Ls6s in his day. He also stated that he has seen carbs as early as December on a June built LS6. So, I guess my search is over and I will stay with my late January date. Due to lower production numbers for certain LS6 components, Jeff says he sees this sort of thing quite frequently.
Thanks for all of the input. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif Call Jeff if you need a December carb. |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
I was going to say that I think the carb should be close to the engine casting dates. Remember, their was a strike by GM and the LS6 cars were a late production for the model year. I beleive that motors were sitting for awhile befroe being put between fenders. Mr70 Rick, could you educate us a little more on this topic?????????????????????

John,
Did not know that there were part #'s (3967477) w/o the GG. Don't know what the application would be for that. A Chevy BB solid lifter A/T application in 1970 was . <font color="blue">3969894GP </font> |

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Right here Rick, hoping to pick up info on this mystery myself. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
Question: How many plants built L78 and LS6 cars in `70? Wondering of the "GG" suffix code (et.al.) may be assembly plant related? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
While we're on the topic (and to avoid starting an unneccesarily similar thread), has anyone seen a non-"GE" 4346, or a non-"DZ" 4053? (concentrating only on production dated carbs for the moment)
|
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
For what it's worth my 70 L-78 Camaro has the non "GG" carb. with a Dec 69 date. The motor was assembled in April of 1970.
I was told it was the original carb. but who knows..... |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
My "GG" info came from Colvins, for what its worth.
|
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
I asked the "king", and he said early production carbs[usually 1st 2 months of production did not receive the two letter suffix. He also said no 96X 97X 98X 99x 4557s have the GG suffix[90x was about the cutoff on 4557s to receive the GG code]] ,also that it crossed over to other carbs as well...I asked him about the dec 69 without a GG code and he said hes never seen one that late w no GG stamp...Email him direct if you need any more info..Kid

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Perhaps a Corvette carb without the GG? This site says the 4557 would have been used in some '70 and '71 Corvette 454's as well. Colvin's gives a different # altogether for the '70 and '71 Corvette.

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
If the 4557 carbs weren't produced after march/70..then what about the 4492 (LS6/L78 auto trans)..the latest date that I have seen is 3rd week jan/70..by the way it has the GR code after the part no. Just thought I would throw this in the discussion.

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
I probably decoded the date wrong. It is 984.
Can someone tell me what the date is? How do you decode holley date codes? Picture attached. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d8...70L78/Carb.jpg |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
9 = The last digit of the year, in this case 1969
8 = The month of production, in this case, August 4 = The week of the month, in this case, the 4th week. When decoding the month, remember that 1-9 is for January through September, "0" is October, "A" is November, and "B" is December. When decoding the year, you have to account for the decade of production as well. A carb with a 3-digit date code is easy to decode, but starting around 1972 they went to a 4 digit Julian date code system which can confuse matters. The Julian system uses the first 3 digits to denote the day of the year, and the last digit is again the year of prodduction. Example: 2503 250 = the 250th day of the year 3 = the year of production, which could be 1973, 1983, 1993, etc. Eric |

Awesome info. Thanks alot. When I'm ready I will send the carb to you for restoration. Nils |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
I thought all 70 SS/L78's had a GG carb...
|
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
The August date of my carb is too early for my L-78 with an April build date. I will be looking for a better dated carb. for my restoration.

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Nils
My L78 is a June build with a Sept dated GG carb. They are getting expensive... |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
My Oct.69 built L-78 Chevelle has a Sept. dated 4492,without a two letter GR suffix.I believe there was some production confusion on the deletion of the suffix on the early assembled carbs.,be it over the counter or assembly line installed.
You should use the vehicles Cowl tag date for a Carb. reference point, and not precede it. I've yet to see any 1970 L-78 Chevelle with a suffix on it's carb, regardless of plant, because they were only produced in the first 100 days of production. The 6 assembly plants building the LS-6 Chevelle have shown suffixes appearing on their Carbs. as early as Dec.69,probably because the LS-6 was produced later. |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
I'm more confused now.
In Musclecarkid's post he said that "no 96X 97X 98X 99x 4557s have the GG suffix[90x was about the cutoff on 4557s to receive the GG code]]" and Eric explained the date decodeing as 98x is August, 99x is September: then no September of 69 4557 carbs should have the GG which mark says his 4557 carb has. Did I misunderstand what is being said? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Sorry if this is hijacking the thread. |
Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Anyone???
If it is just me being thick headed let me know. I'm fine with that too. |

Ever notice when Google'ing Chevy details you often come across old threads from here? . Anyway while searching another topic I found this old thread...check it out. .

Re: List 4557 "GG" carb ('70 LS6 M/T)
Just to add a little about the later production dates on these Holleys, I had a June built LS6/T400 car that had the original carb that was dated 043 with the GR code.
