interior paint question
on my 68 ChevyII, I am repainting the interior which is blue (737). My question is what color is the strip of metal at the base of the rear window supposed to be? My car is Tuxedo black with the blue interior and was sprayed black inside by another owner. I think the strip should be black but not sure. This is the long strip between the speaker tray and the bottom of window. Thanks. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Schonyenko2;
I know that the 1968's had the inside door frame painted interior color. I know that the metal on the inside rear window should be painted the interior color in low gloss. It this another 1968 difference. When would the strip be painted black vs interior color? Thanks, Greg R. |

What is the letter code on the top line of the trim tag way to the right of the date code on your car? |
Re: interior paint question
Greg, It's possibile that it could be body color. 68
s are a different breed. I just don't remember seeing one body color though. Where's Ray M., or Tommy K. I've got a 68 rat holed, but it's not close enough to go check on. Maybe it's like the rocker curtains. Tommy, can you find any body color if you sand it down? |

I got a great shot of Ray M's from last years nationals. I generally do not take pictures of the packtray. But this is a 3/4 exterior shot that clearly shows the rear window metal as interior blue. Greg R. |
Re: interior paint question
I'll try to get over to Cronkleton's to look at his L78 nova. It's built around the same time as Ray's but has rocker curtains. We'll get to the bottom of this yet. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: interior paint question
Greg, I have A "B" on the trim tag. Schonye, I have blue paint around the speaker holes but haven't gotten under the paint at the rear window yet. I am trying to post the PPG paint info for 68. I forgot I had it, maybe it will help some.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../68colors2.jpg

Re: interior paint question
I know thats not a very clear scan, sorry. Looks like 737 is listed twice both times being dark blue poly, once in A low gloss and the other "0" gloss. Looks like my dash uses both low and zero gloss and from what I can tell the area in question at the rear window is also blue "0" gloss.

Re: interior paint question
I didn't think about the build date till you mentioned Ray's and the other 68. My build date is 07B which I think is the same week as ray's.

Re: interior paint question
I got up to where I've got my 68 stored and checked it. It's an original Tripoli tourquise car, bench seat, 307 glide. O 3 A build. It has the rear area painted low gloss black.

And here's Ray's car. I zoomed this from a larger picture so the quality isn't the best, but you can tell the piece in question is in fact <font color="blue">Blue. </font>

Re: interior paint question
I hand sanded with 600 grit and only find black. I used stripper in A couple of areas and it didn't reveal any blue at all. Thats odd because my package tray area cleary has the same blue paint on it that the dash and portions of the doors have on them . I'll sand more this weekend but I think my car is supposed to be black at the base of the rear window. The only other thing I need to find out now is where does blue paint stop at door frame and doors and where does the black exterior start???

Re: interior paint question
Before I looked at mine, I was going to throw in the towel and say I might be wrong. Tommy, the black starts about 1-2 inches in a straight line, all the way across the package tray area, in the back, and goes up onto where the back glass sets.
Again, mine is a cheapo bench seat interior, where Ray's, and Tommy K's are deluxe. Havn't had a chance to check out Jon's yet. Seems like there is no rule of thumb when it comes to 68's Tommy, didn't you tell me once that one of the previous owners thought your car had day 1 aluminum heads installed at the dealership? |
Re: interior paint question
My car is kinda weird Schonye, It has all the chrome stuff outside and is A SS car but is A stripper inside with the cloth blue bench and rubber floor. I got conflicting info from the 2 owners I was able to talk with about the engine. I do know it ran A 427 for many years in the 70's but don't have A clue about it's original engine. I talked with some people in the area where I bought it and some said they only knew the car with A 427 Aluminum head and then later as A 396 aluminum head. Everything was A dead end on the history so I finally just left it alone. Who knows........

Re: interior paint question
I've been doing some checking on this color vrs black issue. Looked at a 70 nova today at a car show. It was gold, with a gold dash, and the rear window support was interior gold also. Talked to Cronkleton today. His red 68 L78 has a black interior, with the window support black. My thought is this. If your car came with colored seats, the interior, including dash area, and rear window support were most likley interior body color. If your seats were black, the dash area, and rear window support area were black. Ray, and Tommy K's gibb cars have color seats therefore they have body color window supports. My 68, and Cronkletons have black seats, so they have black rear window supports. If your car had colored seats, and headliner, that back panel should be interior body color. Black seats, and headliner, black window support.
Greg, please also do some checking, but this is what I've found so far. |
Re: interior paint question
I removed my rear window so I could sand that area better and to check the area around the window for rust. It appears that someone had sanded that support completely before because it was the only area with red primer. I had A few pits around the window so it was good I took the window out. I did find blue paint under black covering the entire package tray and down into the valley below the rear window support. the paint I removed on the support was very thick, looked as if they tried to spray it while the window was still installed. When I got the car that area was carpeted so not only did I have to remove all the paint but carpet glue as well https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif.

Re: interior paint question
Upon checking the 69 L78 Nova body that I have, it was originally a blue deluxe bucket car, the rear sill (under the rear glass) IS definitely a flat Blue and the dash appears the same. SULLY

Re: interior paint question
The Gibb car's came with deluxe interior this maybe why they were blue, my blue Gibb car was blue also on the upper area above the the rear panel. Kim

Re: interior paint question
My dash was also light blue same as the steering wheel center.

Re: interior paint question
Looked at a ton of pictures and can not find a single example (that show up in the pictures...) of non interior color rear package tray.
I am going on the premise that it was painted the color indicated on the body tag. Tommy, glad you dug deeper on yours. Greg R. |
Re: interior paint question
Every deuce that I've ever worked on with the 731 blk interior has a black rear window support. Including my unrestored Yellow deuce.
I don't think it matters if it's a deluxe interior or a colored 731. If the seats, dash area, headliner are beige, or blue, or whatever, the window support area at the trunk end of the package tray will also be the same. If the seats, dash area, headliner, are black, so will the support area. |

Looked at a ton of pictures and can not find a single example (that show up in the pictures...) of non interior color rear package tray. I think we're both saying the same thing. I agree that you wouldn't get a black rear window support if the rest of the interior was colored. I agree that if Tommy has a colored interior that the rear window support area should match the painted dash area. |
