I was just wondering if there is a fastback chevy II still around. I think they just built 3 of them.
Does anyone have any pictures or info on them?

They're still around, not sure how many or what the total numbers of conversion pieces (roof mainly) were built originally but I'm no expert. Thomas would take orders so it makes you wonder how many roof sections were built at a time or if on an as ordered basis. - probably as ordered after the first few, if there were more ordered. Supposedly there were only three cars built and one was destroyed but it was either this site or another I saw where someone mentioned that the "destroyed" car was saved.

I want one. I've always liked Thomas products. About five years ago I saw a '62-'63 Nova convert that was gutted -no interior or top mechanism just a decent rolling shell. I had thoughts and it would have been a perfect starting point for a street version.

What parts (extra?) are known to still be around? I wonder if someone has the molds for the body pieces. Hey, if one shows-up at an SCR... pics, pics and more pics...ooh video too.

It's ironic that those 3 cars were built for the European road racing circuit, but they all three ended up as drag cars! The Alan Green car, the cKc car, and Huston Platt's dixie twister - all very cool cars https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

My friend Don says that Rich Carlson, the official photographer for NHRA Division 6, has a bunch of photos of the Alan Green car, perhaps including some construction pics. Don has been trying to get Rich to dig these out for a couple of years now..

That's a cool pic, I didn't know which of the three cars became the 'Super II' - guess it was the Allen Green car https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif That car had some serious mods done to it in order to create the Super II. The front fenders were stretched, the engine was set back, the rear moved up... Wow!

What is the reference to "Torque Flite" on the side of the "Super II"? I doubt they were running (and advertising) a Mopar tranny.

They just might have been running one back then. That was before the turbohydro came out and the powerglide as we know them now, was not developed. I had a 66 chevelle back in 67 with a adaptor on a L-78 396 to a torkflite. Worked pretty good for the money I had to spend back then.

With all we have at our disposal these days it is really hard to understand how little was there for the fast boys back in the late 60's. You either got good at a 4 speed or else! Then in 1968 when Chev came out with the turbo-hydro. Even then it took a year or two till they were making them stronger than just the average stock tranny.

We all laugh at the prices in the speed cataloges from back then. But if you were working back then and your take home was any over $100 for the week you were making pretty good money. Not all of us were born rich. Those prices were still a streach on the old pocket book. I bought my first house in 1964 for $8,400 and the payment was $68 per mo. That was better than renting at the time. Now it is worth around $85,000. Wish I had bought the whole block.


Back in 1962,I not yet out of High School, I'll never forget making $20 a month payments on my first 4 speed for a total of $100, it was a cast iron case BW tranny. The guy took it out of his 58 348 biscane and held it till I paid it in full. I remember drooling over it every time I paid him some money on it.

I remember the bank turning me down for a $425 loan on a 59 corvette that had a bad motor because I was only taking home about $90 a week back in late 1965. I was fresh out of Barber college and was working steady. I tried to give them extra collateral of a 56 Nomad body but they were not interested. I also had a 61 FI vette and a 63 chev wagon to get to work in.

Things are all relative as time goes by. Seems the more you make the more it costs to buy the things you want.

Larry is right. Before 68 mopar torque flites were about the best out there. My old Honest Charley catalog had those adapters for tqflts to chevy. Although not available in all lines, M40's were available before '68....I think full size M40's debut was in '65 for the '66 models? .

The M40, Turbo 400 transmission option enter production in February of 1965 for full sized cars. There were 17,821 factory installed for that production year. Along side that debut was 2 more debuts. Same month and year, the L35 396- 55,454 installed and the Z18 Caprice Custom Sedan Equipment- 40,393 built. I think they all helped push the Caprice option to being it's own model for 1966.

I meant to say that I thought I read about the saved Fastback on Rabbit's board. Thomas did have the engine set back with the firewall/cowl cut to clear and Allen Green had moved the rear forward later but yes, they definitely stretched the front end 8-10" and maybe even squeaked the engine back farther. I guess they didn't bother with the hood. Here's another of the Dixie Twister:

Actually, the Alan Green fastback is in Steve Statham's book entitled 'Nova SS'. The current owners name is in there too, but don't recall who it is. This car was also for sale in Hemmings several years ago. Wait a minute.. that was the Allen Green car!? I remember the ad and still have the page from Hemmings that I tore out, it was in there a few times. If it was the Allen Green car it had been restored to "stock" (not completed). -The rear axle/wheelbase and body are in the original locations. The ad stated all original lightweight fiberglass and didn't mention it's prior specific history. Yeah, I have that book. Also, I had asked one guy about the 3 cars having Mystery 427s and he didn't believe it. -aah... what's his face writing for the fairly new Chevy Rumble mag. He said he and a bunch of other people would have been down there with their cameras if it were true. The early mag articles don't give a hint to what was published in the Nova SS book. I still don't think the book was quite correct on Chevrolet's involvement on the building of the 'glass pieces, I think it was mainly Thomas and his contacts, but I really don't know. It would be cool if they were Chevy built but??? -anybody? I have pics on my computer from the book but I'll have to tweak them before posting.
