How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
I have a question that maybe one of you can help me answer. In 1966 aprox. how many 427 425hp Biscaynes were produced. I don't think there is an exact number but maybe an educated guess? Thanks for any help.
|
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
They made a total of 122,400, Biscayne's in 1966, 83,200 were
6 Cylinders’, and 39,200 were eight-cylinder of the hole big car line up in 66' there were 1,856, L72 425hp 427's made, that would include impala, bel air, and caprice and Biscayne, although I don’t think there has been any L72 caprice's found. hope this help's a bit |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Thank you for the help. I was just curious because I really couldn't find any specific numbers on the Biscaynes. This website is GREAT!

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
During my short, brief periods of coherancy I thought just before Barrett/Jackson there was a picture of THREE L72 Caprice side by side posted on this site. The gold one actually sold at B/J. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Now that you mention it, I do remember that post. Here is the link to the Caprice L72 that just sold at BJ. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/aucti....asp?id=181853

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Well, ZL1.FUN, I beg to differ on your V8 Biscayne production total. My GM documentation shows that there were 148,101 Biscaynes built. From that total there were 54,601 V8 Biscaynes built. You may have overlooked the V8 Biscayne wagons. Granted there may not have been any L72 Biscayne wagons built, but the wagons would have to be included in the total because they were V8 cars. And then we run into the same 'ol thing "who knows for sure?". Here's what we do know.
Biscayne production- V8 2-door sedan mdl 15411 - 12,165 4-door sedan mdl 15469 - 27,072 4 door station wagon mdl 15435 - 15,364 other V8 production totals: Bel Air 2-door sedan mdl 15611 - 19,254 4-door wagon 2 seat mdl 15635 - 52,775 4-door wagon 3 seat mdl 15645 - 14,444 Impala Sport Coupe mdl 16437- 281,335 Convertible mdl 16467 - 30,395 4-door sedan mdl 16469 - 140,876 4-door Sport Sedan mdl 16439 - 169,225 4-door wagon 2 seat mdl 16435 - 38,509 4-door wagon 3 seat mdl 16445 - 16,834 Impala SS mdl 16837 - 102,619 Impala SS Convertible mdl 16867- 15,783 Caprice 2-door Custom Coupe mdl 16647 - 107,047 4-door Custom Sedan mdl 16639 - 73,962 4-door Custom wagon 2 seat mdl 16635 - 18,000 4-door wagon 3 seat mdl 16645 - 11,506 That brings the total of V8 cars to 1,147,165 units, 2-door V8 cars to 568,598 units. Most if not all of the 1,856 L72's were probably put into 2 door cars. But, there is knowledge of at least one 4 door car that was built. I don't remember what model it was. The Biscayne had the lowest 2-door V8 total. That being said, it doesn't mean that the Biscayne would have the lowest number of L72 cars. Probably quite the opposite since it was one of the lightest cars in the bunch. In fact the 1966 Finger Tip Facts shows the Biscayne and Bel Air being virtually the same weight. The others get heavier on up. It's tough to make a guess since there are so many variables. If you go purely by production totals, most would be Impala Sport Coupes followed by Caprice, then the SS, etc. But with racing in mind most people went with the lightest, most stripped down car. So that would blow the production total guesses out of the water. The lighter car guess makes more sense. With the Biscayne and Bel Air being the lighter cars, most of the L72's probably went into those. Maybe in the range of 500-600 each, maybe a little more or less. Remember that's a guess. I even heard that some guys ordered the cheapest car with the L72, only to rip it out of the car and put it in something else! And yes, there were L72 Caprice's. I own one and so far have tracked down 7 others. My post with the other 2 cars is probably still floating around. |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
I stand corrected, This has been posted for a little wile now, in all due respect my question, is are people so quick to correct other’s but not so quick to answer I do not mean this in a insulting way just wondering ?
|
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
You're right, there was a little bit of time between the original post and your reply. My reply was a little involved and it took me a little more time than usual to get it done along with everything else. My reply wasn't mean't to be insulting to you. I sorry if it came across that way.
What was your source for the numbers you posted? |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
No need for apologies, I was a little too hasty on my reply, I got my incorrect info from a couple of old magazines, that had been laying around, I guess it goes to show don’t believe every thing you read. ZL1.FUN

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
I appreciate the work both of you did for me, I love the information, that is why I am here. I have printed the pics and breakdowns for my file. If you don't mind Mark I am going to PM you with a couple of easier questions since you also own one of these cars. Take care everyone.

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
ZL1.FUN- Sometimes those magazines get somethings wrong. I tend not to totally trust them. We all can get corrected around here. There are some guys that really know a whole lot here and if they know it they speak up. That's what's great about this site. You can almost always get the information you need. Just be careful of the guys with the "sucks" signs. They can be trouble. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
427freak-either way. Post it here or PM me. |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
mssl72-I haven't played with one of these big L72 cars before, but I am having fun. Here are my questions
1.Exhaust manifolds same as corvette? 2.Are the rear trailng arms different-boxed? 3.The interior is unmolested, where should I look for broadcast sheet? 4.Valve covers same as corvette? 5.Was there a date these cars would have been built before or after? Those are the things that I had questions on for now. Thanks again. |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
1-Exhaust manifolds same as corvette?
Yes, they were same as Corvette. #3880827 LH and #3880828 RH 2-Are the rear trailng arms different-boxed? No, they were never boxed from the factory. 3-Build sheets can be found almost anywhere, but the most common place is in the back seat. Remove it and check the back side of both cushions. They've been found under the carpet, behind door panels and I've even heard of people finding them above the headliner. 4-Valve covers same as corvette? Yes and No. This info is '66 specific and there was NO CHROME! The valve covers were painted. No Tonawanda decal on the passenger side either. They weren't used until 1967. The passenger side cover is the same, the drivers side is not. They had drippers on the underside, just as Corvette. The difference on the drivers side was in the power brake booster notch. It was about the size of a 1/2 dollar and didn't go all the way down to the flange. Take note of the spark plug wire stand-offs and their position on the cover. The stand-offs are in the same position only mirrored on the passenger side. The drivers side also has 2 clips for the temp sending wire. Here's a few pics of the drivers side cover. The one pictured doesn't have drippers. http://tinypic.com/sfku8y.jpg http://tinypic.com/sfkrgz.jpg 5-Was there a date these cars would have been built before or after? They were made during the regular 1966 production year. I hope that helps out. |

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Speaking of odd 427/425 cars, there were two that used to show up at Osceola. One was a dark blue 66 Bel Air 4-speed wagon owned by a guy named Bob Fox. He owned a service station and ran it with headers and slicks at first. When NHRA put a pure stock section in the rule book, he went back to manifolds, mufflers and Prowler GT street tires. Dont know how fast he could really go cause he just went fast enough to win. He never let it all hang out. The car was for sale in the late 70's for $3500 cause he was retiring and moving to Arizona.
Second 427/425 car was a special ordered puke green 68 Bel Air 2 door post car with an in dash factory tach and three on the tree https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif owned by a guy named Steinbruner. According to his brother, he wanted to pay cash for the car and was too cheap to spend the extra bucks for the 4-speed. After he quit racing the car he used it as his daily driver till the 74 gas crisis. He pulled the 4-2-7 out and swaped it off for a small block to save on gas money. The car is still around the area and I see it at the drag strip maybe once a year. It's primer grey, still has a small block..... and it ain't fer sale. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Only to have those days back..I had the same console with 4sp and gauges in 66. I seem to recall a vaccum gage too? Was that in 66 or was that in some othe hot rod I had? hmmmmm
I ran into a guy back around 69 who had a 66 Biscayne big block but darn if I can remember if it was a 427 or not. I found this car at a dealer in late 1965. It was a demo being driven by a salesman and was my first new car. That photo is around 1969 (sat in garge there for 2 yrs while I was in Army 66-68) and not long before I traded it in on a 1970 Chevelle SS454 LS5. http://www.synthetic-oil.com/images/1966SS396.jpg |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
ZL1.FUN - You're better off going to Classic industries to buy the dual snorkle air cleaner they have for $189.00. It's the closest thing you'll find at a reasonable price. Original full size '66 L72 air cleaners are going for well over $1,000.00. There was an NOS one that sold recently for $4,550.00. Guys with original cars needing an air cleaner will fight for it. Save yourself some bucks.
Anders - Thanks! That's the 4 door I was thinking about. John Brown - Thanks for the info on the L72 Bel Air wagon. I wonder where it is now. That would be a cool piece. Some people didn't realize that if you didn't spend the extra bucks and order a 4 speed behind an L72, you got a 3 speed on the tree. That would be interesting running down the strip and shifting like that! |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
It there a difference between the air cleaner used on these cars and the one used on 70-72 Z28s? If so, can anyone tell me what it is?
Thanks, Jason |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
I was just looking at that today and wondering the same thing,
I really hope some one can answer this one |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Yes, there are a few differences. That's why the price on the real ones get steep.
First, take a look or feel the bottom. It should be flat/smooth. Take a look at these 2 pictures. wrong- note the ridge in the bottom; even while it's on a car you can reach under and feel this ridge/groove http://tinypic.com/sparv8.jpg correct- note the flat bottom; no ridge/groove; take note on the part number #6421970 and the correct location of service decal, pass. side http://tinypic.com/spas8h.jpg Now for the more obvious wrong thing without having to touch it. wrong-the way the snorkels are mounted is different; these have a mounting flange that's on the outside of the air cleaner body See the way the snorkel meets the body on this one? http://tinypic.com/spav0h.jpg here's how it should mount and look http://tinypic.com/spavlh.jpg It shouldn't have a service decal in between the snorkels that says "Front" on it. The top was not chrome. It was painted black just like the rest of the air cleaner. |

Thanks for the info. If is very helpful.

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
I just posted an air cleaner for one of these cars on Ebay. I thought a few of you may be interested. Here is a link: 66 Air Cleaner
Good Luck, Jason |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
What happened to the little ears that position the air cleaner body on the carb? It looks like the were cut off. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif
|
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
I really have no idea. Besides the blasting, this is how it came to me. I am fairly ignorant when it comes to the details of these air cleaners. I can grab some close ups if you like.

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
That would be cool. Do you know what area I'm referring to?

Here is a pic. It is a bit tough to see due to the etching primer.

Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Yep, that's it. They were cut off. Those might be pretty hard to replicate.
|
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Is there any reason to replicate them? It would be much harder to replicate the rest of the air cleaner https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif.
Jason |
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
Well, sure it would be harder to replicate the whole air cleaner. The ears center the air cleaner on the top of the 3246 Holley and keep it from moving. If you want the air cleaner to be the way it should, the way it came from the factory, to be properly centered and not have it moving around, you'd fix it...wouldn't you? Why would you not repair it?
|
Re: How many 66 427 425hp Biscaynes?
-------Take another air-cleaner with the same tabs and no real value and cut and splice. Wouldnt be so tuff..........Bill S
