Beautiful automobile. Frustrating that critical pix are out of focus! Take the 20 minutes to move the alternator out of the way to take a decent photograph of the stamp pad, for example. Trans next, then rear end, then....

Blurry but it looks like a repo trim tag.

Definately a repo tag

I noticed the same thing about the tag. Makes you wonder what else is fake or re-stamped.

How can you guys tell this tag is reproduction? What are clues to look for? Can we compare an original tag verses a repop tag in the "Tech and Resto" section and make it a sticky thread? I know I would benefit from it, I would presume others would too. If we need a picture or two of an original tag I can supply those as well.

If you guys think this car is nice, you should see the 1969 L-78 Camaro SS convertible that I purchased from Charley and now is owned by PhilS. It's every bit as nice and with FACTORY and DEALERSHIP paperwork.

By divulging the reasons why, the counterfieters would know as well and make the necessary corrections. Study tags from known originals with history and docs and compare to some restored cars. There are several repo tag producers, and each has their flaws.

Tag is 05A engine is 05/05; "ORIGINAL MOTOR BEARING THE JH PREFIX ON THE PAD WITH A BUILD DATE OF T0505 WHICH IS THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE BODY BUILD DATE.CASTING NUMBER 3955272."

Also looks like a '68 Smog pump to me, since we are checking it out might as well commenthttps://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Cool car, very nice restoration.

???? Is everyone out East who takes good pics for ebay cars, required to type in Caps? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

My 6A built L78 had an engine date of T0505. Based on the VIN, the car was built the last week of production in June. Remember all June built cars are tagged 6A. The rear was dated 6/26. Flags have been raised on this one.

I have some great photos from Muscle Car Review in 1990. There is a centerfold of the car in that issue. Talks about a ball joint breaking while backing up and the restoration that followed.

Good memory Tim. It was the Cover Car as well. There is an L78 Camaro Convertible registry starting up soon.

And those pictures are BEFORE it was restored by Camaro Specialties in East Aurora, NY. Bob Harris spent 850 hours on this car and said this was the tightest convertible he has ever seen and worked on. Every inspection mark on the chassis was intact, because it had be undercoated when brand new at the dealership, before delivery. They hand wired brushed the entire undercarriage to preserve every mark. Not ONE pinhead of rust on the entire car.

Warren,
As you know the car runs as well as it looks. It is one of my favorite cars. I have to thank Charley for helping me get that car. I think the L-78 rags in the Camaros and Chevelles are great cars and have been somewhat under appreciated. Last year I bought the Royal Plum 67 that belonged to Richard M of Coast 2 Coast. It's a great car but can't compare to your old car. Daniel told me that CRG knows of about 20 1967 L-78 rags but I haven't heard any numbers on the 69s. A registry would be great.

About the same # of 69 L78 rags....

Thanks Kurt,
Are all of these cars documented? If so what is the required documentation to make your database?

Steve Shauger 03-21-2006 02:58 PM

Re: 1969 Camaro L78

Kurt, I believe there are significantly more 69 L78 rags. The ICC 69 pace car registry had more than a dozen pace car l78 rags registered.

The original owner put Yenko stripes on the black L78 the first week he owned the car! Can't wait to see that one finished.

Phil,

I was keeping track of these cars, during the years I owned it. I had counted 11 others, none of these were Z11's. I have since seen a few more. Not very many though had the docs that my car had. My guess is that there are probably many more than just 20.

There are numerous claims, but very few documented cars. I have viewed 8 at Auctions/shows over the past few years and the only one with proper credentials was the Gold one, which sold at B/J.

Stefano,
The Olympic gold L78 SS convert was purchased by a fellow named Benson, in February 2001. He and I had our cars parked next to each other at the Camaro meet at Domino Farms, MI that year. He had just purchased it the previous months before out of Hemmings Motor News for 40K. Was a nice original car.

I was just answering this question. No, not all of those 20 have documentation.
There was a lot more than 20 cars that were made.
