"Sweating" heater hoses???

I was out in the garage the other day looking at what I needed for the L79 to get it ready of this season and noticed that my heater hoses were covered in an oily feeling liquid??? Having never seen this before, I posted on a Corvette site that I visit asking what was going on. Two other members noticed the same thing this weekend on their cars, but none of us know why this is happening. One of the guys has brand new hoses!!! So what's going on here? Anyone else notice this before? Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

I don't know what exactly causes it but it is very common at least where I live and can be a real pain in the a$$ and is in fact very sticky. I believe it is a by-product in the rubber production and it leeches out with the climate change. Steering wheels do similar things though I believe that is due to the plastisizers in the plastic. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

Well that explains it Rick...my car is from MN https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

What is weird is that the rad hoses were fine on all 3 cars also...you would think they would be made with similar materials???

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

Just a guess here, but I assume that you have put some kind of treatment on them. You might have some humidity in the air and the water in the hoses is colder than the air. So when the hoses start 'sweating' they pick up some of the hose treatment and make things feel 'oily'. Maybe this is the answer. If it is not, I am sure that someone will have the answer. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

stinking CHEAP AZZ RUBBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! same problem over the last year with Tempo and other brand rubber squeez bulbs for outboards...took me a bit to get a handle on it, it was letting gas weep but even worse was letting it pull air and fuel when running and giving all kinds of grief thinking the carb was fouled as it would not idle very well and even just die from not pulling fuel from the tank just pulling air...bottom line who ever is making the rubber stuff lately SUCKS!! China???? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

I had the same problem with cheap repo heater hoses.

I have that problem with one of my smog hoses - except that it's an original hose from '70! I know why it does it though - I swiped some vinylex on it a few years ago, and it's been sweating ever since https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

I wonder if it could be from all the years that used car lots put shiney crap on them to make the engine compartment look cleaner. Now the stuff is weeping off. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Thanks guys! The previous owner of my car was in his 70's and has done no engine detailing that I can see, so I don't think it is rubber treatment in my case.

Just ordered up a nice set of Diamond Back red lines for her too Sam so I can get it out once or twice a year https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

I have a feeling that old spaghetti bender ain't going to need a shoe in his place https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Zedder...depending on the size you get I found the tread pattern is kind of funky looking . The wider 60 series stuff have a high speed type tread...takes a little getting used to..

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

Yeah, I know what you mean Belair...I prefer the look of the bias ply repops, but I want to drive the car a good bit this summer and want it to handle and ride well. I got the Firestone Supreme SI red lines in the 205/75-15 size. A couple of friends have them on their '67's and they seem to look and fit the best.

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

I don't think it has anything to do with anything other than inferior rubber products. My heater hoses are supplied from the original manufacturer, but my radiator hoses were NAPA, and they were constantly covered with the slime. I NEVER covered ANY rubber in my car with that silicone shinny slimy stuff like Armor-All, or any other product that contained silicone!!! It's simply antifreeze that's leeching through the rubber.
Find a better supplier...............or nos. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Seattle Sam 03-15-2006 02:38 AM

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

It could be antifreeze leaching through the hose, but MAKE SURE your hose clamps are tight, it could just be leaking around the fitting.

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

I had the same goo on my repro heater hoses that were sitting out on the counter. It has nothing to do with any fluid running through them. It seems to be some type of byproduct of the production process...sort of like the outgassing you get from plastic interior panels that makes a new car smell like a new car. Only in this case it's a gross slime that only lacquer thinner or brake cleaner can remove.

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

well, this don't happen on my car hoses, but it happens every winter to my air compressor hose.
have to clean it every spring with wax & grease remover.

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 03-15-2006 05:22 PM

Re: "Sweating" heater hoses???

There's no fluid in my smog hose https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif It's my own fault for trying to spiff the old hoser with vinylex! I didn't have this problem b4 I swiped the hose, and the other smog hose is fine - I could kick myself, but.... that would only increase the pain https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

I used to notice my hoses & tires would sweat on certain high humidity days during storage throughout the Fall & Winter,so I soon put a few inches of moisture barrier down on the cement floor directly underneath the entire car.I even put a 11"X 24" wood plank under each tire, and as of yet have not seen anything sweat yet. http://www.benzo.org.uk/images/bzswt.gif

I had the same problems with my heater hoses AND the hose from the washer solvent bottle to the wiper motor. And I never treated the hoses with Armorall etc.

How do you tighten a hose clamp on a piece of hose sitting on your workbench that starts sweating? If I put some clamps on either end and tighten them, then my sweating problem will go away? (Sounds kinda kinky to me! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif)

I have a '68 Chevelle with the remote power steering resevoir mounted on the fender. The hose is factory GM, and when the weather was cool/cold it would "weep" through the rubber. Recently moved into our new home which has the radiant floor heat in the garage, and the problem went away.

Boy............................,
I meant liquid leaching through the rubber. But I guess I was wrong, since they apparently do it just sitting on the bench!
The only hose I've had the problem with was the cheap Gates replacement upper radiator hose on the '09. (which is really the same hose they sell you for a SB. You just have to cut an inch off it.)

Now, let's not have any kinky comments about me cutting off my hose...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif
