Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & tester
Rob,
I think those units are very cool, either for display in a very nice "garage" setting with nicely restored cars OR for actual use. I own one unit, a few years older than that one. It appears to be very functional but I'm missing the cables for the O-scope. I believe mine is 1968 vintage. I think it's called a SUN 900 Scope Motor Tester. I also have a vintage catalog that shows the unit. My intention is to get it working and USE it on my cars. Afterall, it was designed to tune the cars I own. There was a feature in one of the magazines not long ago that presented many of the old SUN testers, indicating that the distributor testers were the best sellers. These units were VERY expensive in their day. I'd prefer to see them actually used as they were intended, but I suppose some now fall into the catagory of "memoribilia" for display purposes. They ARE neat. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif Just my $.02. Verne |

Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & tester
Dan, it does a bunch of stuff...you can hook it up to your plug wires and cut individual cylinders, or check the performance of each cylinder, do all your dwell/timing stuff, tests your exhaust output, does leak down tests, tests all your ignition components, and lots of other jazz...it really is a PERFECT tuning aid for the old stuff. It's a cool, cool piece, and last time I fired it up it worked...but as I said in the ad, I have another one of these will lots of extra goodies (including the lower cabinet spec sheets), so there's no need to have an extra in the way...but it would look KILLER in your garage!
Verne: this model 400 would dwarf that model 900 of yours! But those are cool machines in their own right, and *definitely* worth hanging onto! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & teste
I'd buy it from you, but I see that you only have a 98.7% Feedback reading on EBay. Makes me kinda concerned about what kind of yay-hoo I'd be getting it from. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif
I've got one of those things too. Not as nice as Rob's, but I'll give it to anyone that wants to come pick it up. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & teste
Is there anybody in the NY/NJ/PA area with one of these they want to get rid of? I'd love to have one. I trained on these back in 1980 when I went to Denver Automotive and Diesel College. (I still have the diploma hanging in my office next to my law degree)

Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & teste
Steve,
Are you interested in any specific model or era? Sun made quite a variety of them. They all perform "basically" the same tests, but are you interested in one that's more period correct for the cars in your garage? I want to get mine operational, that is, the missing O-scope cable. They were the state of the art in their day. So, they still are where my cars are concerned.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif Verne |
Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & teste
I'm not looking for any particular era model. I would actually want it for tuning my cars.

Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & teste
I used one those, when I worked at Lafferty Chev in 1983. Very cool https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Vintage SUN Engine Performance machine & teste
I used a Sun 400 last weekend to tune a car. Even used the exhaust gas analyzer on it...these things are bulletproof!
If anybody has a spare glass lens for the vacuum gauge, mine has been broken forever (20 years!) They are more than just garage art. Colin |
