71 Hemi Cuda Coupe-Ebay

Anyone watching this Hemi Cuda on Ebay, 33K mile car, never restored, orange, body color bumper, vinyl top, its one mean looking ride! Its only slightly over 1million with 4 days to go. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Thanks for posting the link, I just thought this is a interesting car. If these Hemi cars are worth that, then so should a ZL-1 Camaro!

Re: 71 Hemi Cuda Coupe-Ebay

I am stymied as well! From a market standpoint, ZL1s should be considerably more than a '71 Hemi 'Cuda. It is a more rare car/engine package (69 vs. 108). They possess an infinitely more rare motor (in production cars) of 69 vs. over 11,000 hemis. Both possess incredibly terrific looks by most people's standards. '69 Camaro beat the '71 'Cuda to the punch on stuffing this enormous motor in a pony-size car by TWO years (in this comparison). Some things just defy logic. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Here is a decent market analysis (albeit mostly a discussion of 70 Hemi 'Cudas) from October 2005 - yeah I know, a LONG time in this market:

Hemi 'Cuda

One thing is for sure. This stuff makes for lively discussion......... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Do you think things might be a tad different if they had allowed a ZL1 option with a convertible Camaro?

What is interesting to me, is that a Hemi Cuda in stock trim and with equal drive train couldn't keep up with an L78 Camaro Much less any of the COPO cars, Iron or aluminum block.

They are still very cool and exciting cars.

I thought it was very interesting and exciting to see and hear the misc HEMI's (real and clones) at Pavillons Mall during the misc B/J auction week

Re: 71 Hemi Cuda Coupe-Ebay

One of the reasons for the value difference is name recognition: Everyone on the planet recognizes the name "Hemicuda". Not a whole lot of people outside of the inner circle of knowledgable musclecar officianados recognizes the name "ZL1". Secondly, the Hemicuda was a car that anyone could have ordered and purchased if they had the money at the time, not so with the ZL1. 652 hardtops plus 14 convertibles were built in 1970 and 108 hardtops and 11 convertibles in 1971. You had to really have the inside track to order a ZL1 back in 69. Third, you could order a Hemicuda in whatever bizarre option combination you felt like back then. The ZL1s were "option challenged." With a ZL1 you are hindered by a select number of colors being really the only option, other than the 2? Rally Sports built. And finally, no ZL1 convertibles, which would have been the high $$$ flagship of the marque.

Re: 71 Hemi Cuda Coupe-Ebay

I see where the name recognition comes into play, but the ZL-1 would smoke a Hemi Cuda stock for stock. My dad bought a 69.5 Roadrunner M-code new(wishes he still had it), and he always said that a stock 440-6 would blister a stock Hemi, but he said with a compression and cam change really would wake a hemi up! I don't think any other manufacturer put a all out race engine in a street car like GM did with the ZL-1, or with the L-88 for that matter. I think GM should have built an L-88 Camaro, has the power of the ZL-1, more durability, just not the lightweight!

Dont need compression or cam change: just toss the original cast iron manifolds and put a real exhaust system on the car. My 70 Hemi Charger has had headers on it since the day it was delivered: https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat...0&fpart=all

A couple years ago we chassis dynoed the car with the headers and stock 2-1/4" exhaust: 354 hp at the rear wheels. It ran 12.77 @ 111 mph. We then installed a set of 3" pipes from the collectors back and it pumped out 395 at the rear wheels (only 3 hp less than with the open headers!) It even ran better with the stock original cam than with the higher lift and duration Mopar Performance one! Haven't run the 1/4 with it since but I'd imagine it's a bit quicker now, with the extra 41 hp. Nothing sounds like a hemi at full throttle...well, actually the only thing that sounds close is the old monster named "Spot" that lived under Herman Munster's stairs.

Awesome, 395 at the rear wheels is impressive for a stock engine, didn't mean to offend you, that is just what I was told. Hemi cars are awesome and carry a certain mystique no matter what, all the racing stories you hear from the baby boomers always has a story about a feared Hemi it!

Your right, ZL1 was a sleeper that hardly anyone other than Fred Gibbs and his circle of friends knew about. On the other hand the Hemi Cuda was the blinged out street racer of the day even though its engine was basically a boat anchor compared to the ZL-1.

They ran ads for the ZL1's back in the day, and ALL of the big magazines back in the day had lots of tech articles and road tests on them...people knew about the ZL1s...it was the *price* that was the problem, not the exposure.

I wonder how that boat anchor would do if it was blue printed and stuffed in a 3200lb. camaro? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

In reality...Most of the high end musclecars just sit and look pretty these days. If I had one to sit and look at I would much rather look at the Hemi Cuda with billboard graphics. One of my favorite cars at Barrett-Jackson was the purple AAR Cuda. I could look at that car all day long. Between the three I would much rather drive the ZL1 but the those graphics on the Mopars are just killer in my book.

That's why the 68' cudas and darts were built. With headers and slicks they ran high 10's !

I've got a '71 383 Bill Board Rag going to the Mecum Auction in May. You can drop a Hemi into it if you desire.

It is a very cool ride. You don't get to see many '71 rag tops driving around. One of 87 383/auto cars. Numbers matching drive train. Broad cast sheet and a decode by GTS.

Sam,
You must have Chevy on the brain, those are Elastomeric bumpers https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif
