I bought it. Had to scrape up all my change on this one.

Just kidding guys. Don't know the guy but he had deeper pockets than I.

I'm glad to have played a small, but important part in supplying photos to help decal the car and most of the literature you saw displayed with the car.

Looked like Ray Allen was happy and he surely enjoyed being a part of the sale.

I predicted it would do $1,000,000 back in November which many thought it would never bring. The LS6 convertible record has hit a new all time high. Congrats to the seller and the new owner.

Hope we can convince him to bring the car to the York US30 show to meet up with the Jack Werst and the 5/50 Superbird this Summer.

Have to admit Kevin and I will be the first to say you were right. I really never thought it would get over 500K mark. anyway congrats to the seller and the new owner

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

$1,242,000 with the 8% buyer's premium. Seems like a relative bargain given the extensive race history and the prices for the Hemi Cuda converts. without any race history.

at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario Calif. This was the first time NHRA drag racing was televised live
on "ABC Wide World of Sports."
Ray Allen killed the competition here as well with a Super Stock victory at this last race of the 1970 season.

Joe,

That's a cool Vitar Ad. I've seen it in a real small version in the back of SS&DI, but not as a full page ad. I would like a nice copy if you can help me out. Have plenty to trade also.

Have to agree Ray Allen looked pretty excited but not as excited as the guy that sold it. IMO, the car sold on 75% Race history and 25% because it was an LS6 Convertitble. Can't beat the paper work either. Factory buildsheet and original NJ Title in Truppi-Kling Competition's name.

The decals definately were a smart move on sellers part. Although they didn't have the time to do it in full race trim mechanically, I believe the car got all the money last night.

I know someone in NJ who has all the "Day 2" Race Parts to make the car Race Ready, and you don't have to seach ebay for 3 years to find them. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

Maybe the guys from Over Haulin' did the final assembly. That car sold on Race History more than fit and finish. Sure they needed more time to finish the car in time for BJ, but I think it stole the show Sat night. High energy crowd or lots of free booze.

Also, it didn't hurt you by going to auction prior to your red one. Your car did very well as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

I am one of the fortunate few who got to see this Chevelle race in 1970 and 1971. This car was the baddest Chevelle around and it was great for us Chevy fans to see it crush all of the Mopars during it's career. Ray Allen was a great driver and you have to give credit to Tom Kling and Ray Trupe as they were the brains around making LS6 horsepower! I only wish Chip would have restored the engine bay as a race car instead of a resto piece. The race history is what sold the car and that's the way it should have been restored. I am happy that NHRA cars are now getting their day in the sun.

Funny you should say that Jerry! Don't know as there was too much chaos up on the stage and I couldn't tell what was going on.

Musclecarkid 01-23-2006 10:13 AM

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

Here's a short explanation. Ray Allen started restoring the car years ago when race cars didn't bring the dollars we are seeing today.

Chip Gerst bought the car only a few months ago as a 3/4 done original type restoration. He hardly had the time to finish the car as you saw it let alone researching all the race parts and race modifications that would be needed to make it an all out race car.

I believe the Briggs Chevrolet and T/K lettering along with Cragar wheels brought back lots of memories of its racing days for many of us.

The car did well at BJ because it is the most famous LS6 Chevelle in NHRA History. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Kevin,
Do you think it was the most famous LS-6 convert or all around most famous LS-6. I always thought Red Alert was more famous (at least in name and not necessarily credits). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

Red Alert was the most famous due to the marketing ....I ruined quite a few of those models myself...that Briggs car was a helluva cool car though and had a record that will stay with the car forever.

Jerry@CHP 01-23-2006 08:01 PM

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

Without a doubt, the Ray Allen Car is the most famous LS6 car in the country. I saw this car run at Englishtown, Maple Grove and Cecil County. It was also the fastest and won more NHRA national events than any 454 Chevelle. How many other LS6 Chevelles won the NHRA World Finals and US Nationals?

Interesting topic.. with that said....

what would a documented Buick GS Stage 1 that won the World Finals, Pomona Winternationals, US Nationals, and every single race at every single event it competed in in an NHRA calender, be worth ??? car competed in C/SA, Stock, and Pure Stock. Won EVERY class at EVERY event. yes, I have the car, AND documented NHRA proof... Sponsored by Cragar/Pennzoil/M&H/Motorwheel yada,yada...

Just curious...

Re: Briggs Chevelle Sells for $1,150,000

I mananged to pick up a really neat article from '71 on the Truppi-Kling Chevelle...that was discarded after the sale on stage.I forget which magazine it's from but it goes into detail on how they turned this car into the world beater that it was.

I though Jim's Chevelle would have broken the bank but obviously the buyers picked race history over a rare, restored 1 of 1 fantastic example.
You did well Jim but I thought you'd do more...

I'd be curious to see what the Buick GS Stage 1 would do as well, especially with as much race history as that.
I grew up practically living at Mid-County Buick in Brooklyn,NY where my dad worked.I would go to work with him in the summertime and just sit and play in all the '65-'69 Buick GS cars.I have always had a soft spot for BB Buicks! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif
