69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

Does anyone know what would be the correct paint markings for a 4-speed Muncie driveshaft in a 69 Camaro (396 L-78)?

Mine looked to have either Yellow or Orange stripes about 12 inches away from one end. Thanks,

Paul

69 Z/28 M22.. This is the original paint. I can measure this when I get home if you want me to...

How were these paint markings applied originally? How would one go about reproducing these?

While we are at it, how about a 350/300hp 4spd?

Did these stripes just designate type of trans?

Paint dabbed while they were balancing...

That mark is exactly what mine looked like. Looks like two seperate stripes in Orange applied with some type of brush while the shaft was turning.

Anyone think they might know if those stripes would be the same from a 69 Z28 w/ M20? Thanks everyone

I would assume it a universal marking... transmission and engine displacement aside. The marking was originally for inspectors, regardless of engine size/tranny option.

Dan is your Z still marked? Crawl under there. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

This is a good question for JohnZ...

Re: 69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

Mosport,
I may be speaking out of turn here as I am refering more to Chevelles but the stripes are not meant for inspectors, they are there for an easy eye reference to line workers to pull the correct shaft from the bins based on the color codes listed on the build sheet. The M-20/21 use a different tail shaft than a Turbo 400 and/or an M-22 and therefor use a different driveshaft flange. The colors are different on the shafts depending on transmission. Also in the case of Chevelles, the engine size may also make a difference since a 454 uses a different shaft than a 396 car. Just trying to clear up a possible misunderstanding.

Hey! You're the one with the Camaro and that was the specific question. I figured since you were stumped I would chime in............. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

There were three driveshafts in 69 Camaros:
manual (SB&BB) & PG
TH350
TH400

That's it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

OK Kurt. So what are the three stripe combinations?

Re: 69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

I have some of them noted, but haven't tried to reconcile the data. Some stripes rust off first, so the data isn't always consistent... Low on my project list. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

What's the difference between a TH350 and a manual tranny drive shaft?

My car was originally a TH350, and I converted to an M21, but used the original driveshaft. I haven't had any mechanical problems, but is one brewing?

Re: 69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

If I am correct, the Turbo 350 shares output shaft splines with the M-20 and M-21. The Turbo 400 shares the splines with the M-22. That is the only difference I am aware of.

Re: 69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

The difference is in the lengths of the shaft, and possibly the position of the yokes on each end in relation to each other. I'm pretty sure the TH400 shaft is shorter than the others, the muncie/PG ones are a little longer, and the TH350 is the longest.

That's not true in 69. Only 1970 M22's had that output shaft, all 71+ Muncies had it.

Kurt,
You are correct and sorry for misleading anyone. Sometimes when I eat, drink and sleep 70 Chevelles I get tunnel vision. Thanks for clarifying. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/stupid.gif

Boy I was just put in my place. I wonder where I got that from? I guess that was a figment of my imagination or someone told me the wrong information. Sorry about that guys.

Learn something new everyday.

The Z28 had a faded orange stripe like yours Darren. I should have a picture around here somewhere... (???)

Darren,
The stripes on my LA built M21 Z are white/orange.

Re: 69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

69Z, M20 that Im restoring now had orange and white stripes near the front, next to each other, and a single orange further down, near the middle. Also had white, blue, and yellow dabs on the yokes/ujoints.

Have the measurements of them, but not handy right now.

Re: 69 Camaro Driveshaft Marking??

This is the problem I've seen.
Three cars, all Z's, all should have the same colors. Did the white fade to yellow or vice versa? I think there's normally 3 stripes, but maybe there are only 2 for this part. Is Dave's car's 3rd stripe for something else or are the other 2 cars 3rd stripe just faded or rusted away. Or was there a coding change midyear (I doubt that). Just hard to be sure.

I have not seen a definitive answer, hopefully somebody else has!
