1st 428CJ convert found
I purchased this car at least ten years ago in CA. The fellow had also owned an automatic.
The car had F (302 2v)on the front aprons http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1134.jpg S (390 4v) on the buck tag http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1136.jpg R (428) on the door and VIN tags http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1126.jpg It had been in CA and TX for its days and was in pretty good overall condition, the paint was a quickie and poor quality. It seemed quite clear that this car was a 428 from the R codes. I had ordered a Marti report a few years ago(similar to PHS paperwork) and was very happy to find out that the car was in fact for real. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1084.jpg Recently I posted the door tag on the Vintage Mustang forum and a couple of real keeners clued into some info that I was unaware of. Shortly thereafter Kevin Marti chimed in and revealed to me that this was the first 428 convertible. How cool is that...... I've learned a few things that hopefully can expand some knowledge on the blue oval. The lower portion of the door tag was supposed to be stamped with the same info as the top part then sheared off. It was called a temporary owners card and was placed in the glove box/owners manual. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1064.jpg You will notice that the door tag on this car did not get stamped on the lower portion. The most likely reason is that the car is a Ford pool vehicle as designated by the 89 dso and probably never did get warranty. The door tag is not for title because 1968 was the first year of "public VINs", the VIN must be visible from the windshield, so that was the VIN for title purposes on any 1968 vehicle regardless of manufacturer. The second anomaly on the door tag was the 3.50 axle code (H code). This was not available on 428 cars. The paperwork from Kevin indicates that the car came with a 3.00 axle (E code). I've not been able to determine what differential is in the car. The third is the Feb 16 date code, the cars were not available until April. When I got the car home I briefly looked through it and pulled up the carpet on the drivers side. The hole in the firewall for the clutch had been cut with a set of tin snips, the piece of firewall was buried in the underlay. I'm sorry that I could not get any better pics, it is not that accessible. If anyone knows anything else about this car please let me know. My intention is to finish putting the parts together for the planned restoration and get it out of the rack in the next couple of years, for now it is out of harms way. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1153.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1151.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1155.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_1156.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_0231.jpg Fred |

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Ha !!!!Prototype is finally giving you a peek at his Stacks of cars...In the pile is my old 80 Motion Camaro and my old Porcupine headed RS Z28. Also the first Muira I will own is in that pile. Lets all hope there are no earthquakes in his neighborhood.. Prototype has been lurking in the background on this site for years but has finally come out of the closet and apparently brought his cars. I know there are others that silently read the forums but never post that also have have interesting cars...Maybe they will slowly chime in also... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

To me the Miura, especially the SV version, is the European equivalent of our COPO cars (same 68-70 period, all out performance, timeless styling). I'm with you on owning one of those Charley. I almost bought one before I bought the Red COPO car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Jeff...That is what we call a GT20.. Hurst...Have Prototype post some pics of his AMC stuff...

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
not even one WOW the first CJ convert found https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif that was the whole point of this, expand your horizons boys, it really is alot of fun, not cheap but fun.
charley: i got none of that stuff, you lie like ashpalt but you know i still don't think you suck. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif njsteve: carfuwy vewwy, vewwy carfuwy. done just like a tow truck, a bar in front and behind each tire, then traingulated to a block and tackle at the top of the rack, then pull the chain till you are blue in the face, no big deal. i first saw the system when i got charley's miura https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif, that fella had em five high i recall. fred |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
The production figures for this car are combined with Shelby KRs. I think it's like 1 of 34?

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
jfk, i'm a sucker for the unloved children of the collector world. we could not get gto's until 69 in canada and you could not get beaumont's or acadian's.
green, crappy olive interior (i did mention the unloved), 4spd, converted to vinyl http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_0273.jpg |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
jeff, it's a 20....p1131, you'll get it.
by the way sv miuras are overated, sexy in the rear bonnet but the bumpers and headlights suck, other than the split sump (which not all SV's got incidentally) they make the same power. oh ya the prices suck too. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_0239.jpg |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
If you want to get rid of that unloved green/green car send it my way. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif I don't beleive I have ever saw an SD that color. Very nice car along with the rest you have there. Thanks for the posting the picture. Like NJSTEVE ask, I'm curious as to how you get the cars on the racks.

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
appreciate the compliments guys, hopefully i'll do my job right and save a couple of these for future generations not just beat on em like charley
speaking of charley, here's a couple to show ya what he's all cranked up about. just to get a perspective of how low they are look at the green beaumont, the miura's roof is at the door handle height of the beaumont and two feet shorter, it almost looks like it could fit into the quarter panel, 100 hp more and almost 1000lbs less, oh ya four wheel discs too http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_0282.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_0279.jpg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...n/IMG_0238.jpg everyone of these cars send a chill up my spine, yes even the unloved stuff, face it we are all whacked in one way or another. have a great sunday guys and i hope some of you have better dreams tonight. the amc chapter will have to wait, back to family and the supercross races! fred |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found

Where is the MOTiON Camaro? Is that a real Ferrari 250 GTO? (that is what its called right https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif) |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Cool stuff Fred. The Chevelle isn't out in the cold is it????
|
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Looks like a black shaker hood mustang convertible on the top rack does that have a 428 in it as well????
Are you happy with your racks and where did you get them if you are happy? Thanks. |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
So the GT is one of the Safir cars? Still extra cool since they were basically done on the originally toolings, etc.
You have two Miuras? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif You should definitely give one to Charley (or me for that matter). Who are you in real life Nicolas Cage? Ok, so he had three including the Shah of Iran's one off SV that had the split sump from the factory. Cage is the only other guy I can think of that had as eclectic combination of American and European muscle...Maybe Carlos Monteverde over here who owned all the Hemi Cars everybody is going gaga over now (the 1st and last Cuda rags) and a pretty top notch Ferrari collection. You've also got a Boxer parked in there, my drool over car as a boy. Looks like you thrash your cars as much as Charley judging by the cool suit box in the other vintage Ferrari!! You've got to drive some of these cars down to STL. Charley get working on him. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Charley, about time that motion camaro went somewhere. When i seen it, it had an inch of dust on it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif Roger

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
mg66- the motion had so much dust on it and that bitchin front spoiler, i put a set of those studded polyglas tires on and it is my snow plow now (i do live in the great white north)

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Fred,
I second Bruce's WOW. I think these Chevy guys are too cool to get excited about the CJ convert, so you should sell it to me and save further embarassment. I didn't see any pictures of my 1/3rd LS6 convert - you aren't selling more shares, are you? LOL All I have to say about those racks is that you are a man of incredible faith. The euro cars are one thing, but you've got all those big block lumps up top! Lotta faith in those little pins on the crossbars! If I show up with a Cal Spyder, do I get to ace Charley out of that blue car? Just wondering. I've got a guy here that is a Ford whiz, FYI, and would love to restore that CJ for you. He is inexpensive, and the car would be at ground level and everything. Colin |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Cool stuff !!! Mangusta https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
|
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Back to the CJ Convertible, I notice it still has the Tie down bracket that was normally removed at Dealer prep still in place. Canada has always had great FORD Lovers up there. I did notice a black stripe down the center of another Mustang Hood indicating yet another 68.5 Cobra Jet Mustang lurking on the premises..??
|
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Hi, This is Fred. I don't have another 68.5 CJ Mustang. Especially a white fastback. Thanks. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
Bruce- what's up....DV gone red and Chad has gone blonde. Great race yesterday, we are so happy to get two this year, Toronto and Vancouver.
Colin- they've been in them for a decade or so, if you think about my carcass walking around on them a car isn't much more. Only if your CJ guy will take a 6 pack. 12bolt- we don't take the hooks off up here, that way we can tow each other around in the snow. For real fun we could use em for the rental car tug-o-war at the next SCR. The white car Colin doesn't want...survivor black plate CA, 4 spd, original paint. Needs the hail mary of details but a true barn find none the less. He says they have to have less than 3,000 miles....he keeps raising his standards. |
Re: 1st 428CJ convert found
I think there is a fine line between a detail and a miracle. Fred's car blew by that line in 1976. LOL
