1968 Yenko Camaro ?

I was flipping through a magazine and saw this Camaro. Don't know anything about it but I thought it would make interesting conversation. What is it? A Z28? Who drove it? Enjoy!

Did the '67 Z run in SS/E?

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

Marlin, I think SS/E would have been 396-375. Barnhart was running SS/B with the 427. I think a Z-28 would have been F or J from what I remember. Kim

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

It depends on the year...NHRA changed their *breaks* in '68, '69, and then to the current breaks in '70...

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

A 375 I think was SS/C and 325 would have been E

Didn't Ed Hedrick run in 'E' with the '69 Yenko?

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

I think he did. Like Tom said each year seems to different

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

Tom didn't say it, I did! LOL!! We need to date the picture (year), otherwise we're just speculating...for instance, the Hurst/Hemi cars started in SS/B in '68, then were banned to A/MP in '69, and back to SS/A for '70...

Tims right,we need to do that.

Jenkins 67 camaro ran SS/C in 67. I think the same car would be in E today

I believe this is pretty close...

1967 396/325hp Camaro
'68 - SS/E
'69 - SS/H
'70 (now) - SS/F

I talked to Ed about a week ago, and it seems like he told me one year (I believe the '69 season?) that the 4-speed cars were in SS/D while the automatics were in SS/EA...like I said, NHRA played with the splits and the factors through those years, and really screwed with some of the racer's minds...

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

Nothings changed. NHRA is still doing that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

I think this would be a good time to ask.
I understand SS = Super Stock but what do the sub codes stand for?
SS/EA stands for what?
A/MP stands for .... ?
I need a history lesson guys.

Chevy454 12-06-2005 04:08 AM

Re: 1968 Yenko Camaro ?

SS/EA would be "Super Stock, classification *E*, automatic"...conversely, B/S would be "Stock, classification *B*, manual trans". A/MP is "Modified Production, class A".

Originally, your "class" was determined by your power to weight factor, which was arrived at by taking the curb weight and dividing it by the advertised horsepower...ie, your car weighs 3,000 pounds, has 500 horsepower, so your factor is "6.00", which puts you in SS/A, which is for cars with factors 6.00-6.49...but, since both numbers (weight and horsepower) were submitted by that particular manufacturer, these numbers got fudged...so, NHRA stepped in and played with some of the factors.

Maybe more than you wanted to know...

Stock classes are designated A/S, B/S, C/S (A/SA, B/SA, C/SA for automatic trans cars) also called A/stock, B/stock, etc. The Highest letter (A) is generally the fastest. Jerry MacNeish runs his 67 Z in E/stock. These cars generally have a stock-appearing body, must run unported factory heads, and the cam lift specs must be factory. My 70 L78 Camaro has a factor of 8.89 so would race in the B/Stock category. More info can be found here at the NHRA web site.

Super stock classes are SS/A, SS/B, etc (SS/AA for automatic). These care are faster than stock, and again the A class is the fastest. These cars are allowed non-factory hood scoops and generally the rules for these cars are more liberal than for Stock. The most famous SS cars are probably the 1968 Hemi Darts and Barracuda's, they still regularly win this class at NHRA events.

As a rule of thumb, automatic class index is generally half a hundredth slower than the same class with a stick.

Other classes of note are A/MP, B/MP (modified production, I think you will see this class on a lot of motion race cars)and A/FX - factory experimental which was the forerunner of the modern funny cars with altered wheel bases and set back engines ("Gee, that's a funny looking car!").

Here is a cool MP car Granny Goose II and here is Dick Landy's "First Funny Car"
