1970 COPO 427 Nova?!?
 

OK, my dad and I have been looking at this car for a while, well hes been looking at it for about 30 years!! Im not to go too far in depth on it, but we have found a 70 Nova, built october of 69 with a 427 in it, also built in october of 69. All the numbers match, nothing to make us suspicious, but is there any way to verify a COPO Nova. I have heard that there were 177 of them built in 70, but I cant find exactly what I am looking for. Can anyone help me on this, with any knowledge of 70 novas with 427s in them! Thanks

To our knowledge, we know of *no* 427s that made their way into Novas from the factory, COPO or otherwise...but keep digging anyway. The 427 was not used in the 1970 model year, and the COPO Novas in 1970 used the LT-1 small block...

By the way, where at in Missouri are you beaming in from?

The factory wouldn't do it, but, Nic<font color="red">K</font>ey Chicago, Berger Chevy, Motion Performance, Dick Harrell Performance Center and others were there to oblige back in the day!

I was in a car club in a town about 45mi. from me back in the early/mid 80's,one of the guys in the club had a '56 sedan delivery and a '70 SS Nova with a, you guessed it, 427. It was/is( he still has everything he ever owned- one of "those" guys!) red/black top/black int.,bench-4sp. Even then we were sceptical but it was a real deal, and he wouldn't even talk about selling. My only doubt is my memory, maybe it's a '69. I'll have to investigate.

There is no way there is a factory 1970 427 Nova. There is not a 1970 or later Chevrolet made ever that had a 427.. (no tall deck truck motor cracks please)... 454 replaced the 427 for '70. And there was NEVER a factory 454 Nova made....ever.... So there goes all those theorys.. Easy Teach,remember your blood pressure! Only thing to say is never say "never","only" or "always",lots of execs and 427s left-over. Exibit A....Z28 convertible? never,only hardtops, always have fixed roofs!!! OOOPS!

I think Dennis Cumby,(OlG LS6) is from down around your area. Believe he worked at the drag strip there in White Hall. He's pretty sharp for an old guy. Maybe he could help you solve the mystery. Hell, Howie, and I will drive down if you need help solving the mystery. I still believe there were L89 novas built which hasn't been proven, and my good friend Mr. Howie doesn't believe. my 2 cents..last year when I had that goofy 4dr nova a local guy contacted me for some stuff..and claimed he had recently popped a 69 L-89 Nova from hiding with paper and it was from alan green chev...he was supposed to come by for some stuff and bring the paper on the car to look over...never heard back from him https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif he seemed like a decent guy over the phone and new his cars...

He's right about the Nova though. I'm pretty sure it's a '69, and I think it's still with the original owner. We both need to do some checking on that car.

As for the dragstrip; Jeff (amuseme) grew up there. (And NO, I didn't own it!) He's seen more horsepower than most of us "Ol' Farts" so he really does know what he's talking about. Hey Budnate. Was that L-89 Nova Blue with Low Mileage and I think a Black Bench interior. Because their used too be a guy Named Rick Aspertarte, that had all his Cars taken by King County in 2004. He had L-78 Camaros, LS-6 Chevelles and L-89 Novas and Camaros and Chevelles.

memory is a little fuzzy, but I think this guy said it was a green one and the right front fender was bent but otherwise near perfect and it had silly low miles, he also had what sounded like a nice 69 Z, he wanted the smog stuff I had for it, I even rang his cell a couple times later on trying to follow up on the car but he never answered or called back... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

for some reason the Rick thing dont ring a bell....could be though it was about this time last year when the guy called me wanting a fender for it...wish he would have stayed in touch I wanted to see the Nova real bad!!!

did the cars sell right away???...they usually take nice stuff store it poorly while it goes through court then want top dollar for edgy stuff later...morons!!

You sure about that Ed? How do you really feel?

Anyway, if it is an Oct 69 427 engine, it would have to be a Camaro or Corvette motor, because they were the only ones with the extended production. Worth checking out.

Knew a guy in So. Ill. circa '79-'80 w/'69 Blue/Black vinyl, black bench, 4spd, taxi mat Nova which was a supposed L-89 . Never saw paper on it. Most of us didn't chase that stuff so much back then. But not a lot of folks referenced L-89's much then, either. Car had black rims w/no caps, Hookers and an L-88 cam. No dog. Jeff Gibula (sp?) was the fellow's name, worked w/a guy named Jim, as I recall, who had a few cool Chevy's he scored from Classic Motors of Hinsdale and a pretty nice '64 Goat I'd seen at auction at O'Hare Expo Center a few years prior. Haven't come across a '70 COPO 427 Nova, yet.

-----Pretty sure the Goat was red with black vinyl top and interior. It was a pretty fair car, although I didnt appreciate it at the time. Used it as my driver for a bit. What Chevys did this fella buy from us??? Would be interested in knowing. Please dont mind if I dont get back on here for a week or so as I am going to Dallas tomorrow to deliver a car.........Bill S

I recognized the Goat as a Classic Motors car, Bill. He pointed out a few '09's, as well. A red '61 SS. A light blue '62 Impala non-SS. A Black '64 340 horse low-miler w/white guts and red carpets/non-padded dash. Kind of a bronze '61 Biscayne. It was all for sale. And he spoke of the green LS-6 I'd seen in the showroom in Hinsdale, though didn't have it "in stock".

Btw, Jeff's "L-89" Nova was out of Tinley, should anyone recall it. We were all down south for some higher learning, at the time.

--------My buddy, Bob S, who works over at Chicago Corvette for Al F will bust a nut when he hears that the 64 still exists. We had all heard that the car had been totalled back in the day. Can you find out if it can be bought? Bob still talks about that thing about every time we are together and if I could tell him how to get it at least he might shut up, LOL!!! A friend, Carl B, bought the '64. Again, this was around '79-'80. Swapped it back a year or so later to the fellow in So. Ill. (Jim?) for the blue '62, which he still owns. Haven't heard of the '64, or it's whereabouts, since. Car was totally original (around 30K on the clock, I think) and drove like new. If it's anything like it was, can see how it'd be worth tracking down.
