69 vs 70 Z's
69 302/290 horse vs 70 350/360 horse... which was quicker?
Found an old pic (~20 years ago) and got to thinking... http://www.hassettroofing.com/Temp/69_70.jpg |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
I have a 69, and love the 69's, but the 70 is quicker. Also handles a little better.

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Kool Picture Mark!!
I would have to give the 70 Z a slight advantage over a 69… |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Agree with the above. On the track, #s vs #s, the 70 was quicker and better handling.
Theyre two different animals. dave |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
That Photo was taken back in 1984. Marks 69 has a 4.56 Ratio. You outta feel it pull, it puts the 302 right in the powerband and keeps it there. I recall throwing fan belts off of this animal 15 years ago-that is how fast it rev's up. Having driven both of these specific cars I would have to give the nod easy to the 69 on acceleration, the 70 on the top end simply due to the gearing.
I have kept track of the RS Z over the years. Here is a more recent photo of this fantistic 69.... http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...PO/Cnv0361.jpg Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Hey Mark- was it Doogie that put 4.88's in his 70 Z0 Z28 and tried to go to Florida in it?

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Who cares which is faster. That place they are parked in front of has Galaga and Zaxxon inside!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
The 70 Z in the picture belongs to Phil Borris, so see we know that he at least drove it one time https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif The picture was taken before Phil Restored the car and as you can see it was already very nice to start with. Hey Phil the guy that you were talking about his name was Dungy. He bought a '70 Z brand new and put 4:88's in it and tried to drive it to Florida, he made it about 2 hours and Blew it Up.

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Yea that is right, the guy put the 4.88's in the car and made it to right around Columbus Ohio where the LT-1 and the 70 MPH speed limit on I-71 took its toll.
Great Story... What was he thinking?? What happened to the car? Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
I have a close friend who bought a 67 435 vett brand new and put 88's in it and drove the car to collage in fla. from NJ and used it as a daily driver with the 4.88's for over 15 years.

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Mark,
I found some more pictures of the 70 and 69 together. If I get a chance later I will post them. They are from the 80's when I drove the '70 on the street.. Memories..The engine makes power to 7200, and Valve float happens at 7800 on the factory tach. Yep I drove it, raced it on the street, One day Topped it out to 130 on the factory Speedo, the rear mirror was shaking so bad you couldent see a damn thing too, hit a bump or dip in the road and the car would slightly lift, land and bark the tires as the rears grabbed pavement again... How I managed not to blow it up is just pure luck, and with help of the 3:73's I am sure. Original engine still purrs like a kitty today... Re: 69 vs 70 Z's

Phil
Is your Camaro equipped with a Speedo/reducer? If so is it #6476736 showing 1.777,or is it #3950352 showing .8241 |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Rick,
No reducer. When I did that I went way past the factory red line on the tach (was 16 and living forever), and wanted to see what my $2600.00 dollar car would do. In hind sight I guess that is right where the 9796 package helped as the front did not lift and the rear did stay planted, so I guess it worked. Phil |

Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif [/ QUOTE ] Phil, I also consider myself very lucky for not venting the original engine, That little solid lifter engine Revs extremely fast, especially with a missed shift at 7 grand. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif I finally wised up and put a REV limiter on the car. You have a lot of self restraint, It must be hard to not take the car out for a ride to “Clean out the Carbon” I am going to have to learn some Self Restraint and “Not Drive the Car” when my Gold L78 is finished. |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Yea you are right It is real tough not to take it out "Hit It" as we used to call it.
The shifter no doubt helped keep me out of the scatter zone too, but now that I think of it I was not one to risk it powershifting all the time. Fun - but the fun can be over real quick if you miss. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Now Hassett Has some powershifting stories I am sure he can tell on the 302. As I recall Mark Dusted a Big block Chevelle with the 302 not too long ago and keeping the 302 revved up was the key! Phil |
Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Phil, When I had my first (bought new) 70 Z it had the M-40/T-400 "on the tree". I understand not as much FUN as shifting the 4 speeds........but I used to let it shift itself out of low at ??? rpm and then manually shift in to drive at ?? rpm....I cant remember (shxx) on details, but I ultimately got this Z-28 with stock long block, stock trans and convertor into high 12's.........(Headers,recurved dist, recalibrated stock 4555, Line Lock, small slicks)

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Chuck,
Yea, Car Craft did that too back in '70. They got the '70 Z test car in to the high 12's too - then broke the driveshaft! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Phil |

Re: 69 vs 70 Z's
Phil you need to get yourself a NOM Hugger Orange 70 Z/28 Driver that you can beat the snot out of.
Then show some self restraint and “Not Restore It” Just Drive it. I’m almost 50 and I still act like a teenager when in mine. I just know when and where now. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |

Mark,
Your father is an extremely nice guy. It was a pleasure to talk to him at Barrett Jackson... Were you the one who was driving when I took this picture? http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2..._Hassett2a.jpg |
