69 Camaro find.
I just came across a 1969 Camaro this guy has owned since he was 13 (about 20 years) this car is in the exact condition it was in 20 years ago. This guy is real particular about his things. He doesn't believe it is anything special and needs to sell it for personal reasons. I got a chance to look at the car briefly on Thanksgiving day, it was inside an enclosed trailer and dark, I had a flashlight but very little room to maneuver. I found out it was originally Fathom Green with a White vinyl top and white standard interior, it has a 12 bolt and disc brakes, it has the gauge console and a tach dash. Currently has a Big Block (he claims is a 454) and an automatic trans. I was curious about the options it had, what are the chances this car was NOT either an SS, Z28 or maybe even a COPO originally? I have not been able to get VIN info yet or much of the cowl tag info other than I know it did not have an X code. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
The first COPO's were built in Late December 69 and they were the ZL1's. They all had X codes. Now this does not rule out it being a Motion car or other dealer built car.
Try to find out the redline of the tach. Also the Vin and then get a NCIS report run (may take a little while) and find out which dealer sold it originally. |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
What is NCIS?

Re: 69 Camaro find.
Ok - I got some numbers on this car - if anyone can help that would be great. I learned that the rear end is not original to the car, The VIN is 530546, the trim tag reads 12437NOR140505
727 57 E 10D I do know it was Fathom Green with a white vinyl top and whit interior and was built Oct 68. The tach is a 7k RPM, I think the redline was at like 6500 or so - but I forgot to write that down. Has the enduro bumper. |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
Mike,
First off, does the car have SS badges? Is the tailpan painted black? Does the car have multi-leaf springs? If so, are they 4 or 5 leaf versions? Do the heater hoses enter the heater core cover ( @ firewall ) in the center, or at the end closest to the engine? Does the radiator have 3 or 4 cores? Is the upper radiator outlet straight, or bent 90 degrees ( toward the passenger side )? Does the THM400 have a flat stamped steel cross-member, or tubular? My 69 L/78 was born 10-D-68 also. It was originally a THM400 car as well. Post what you find. It will start the process of determining if it was a small or big block originally. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Steve |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
Ok - it does not have SS badges - it actually has Z28 badges - it has 5 leaf springs. The tail panel is the same as the car now but the car is currently Maroon. I will check on the other things.
Thanks Mike |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
What year and state did he buy the car from. Ed

Re: 69 Camaro find.
I think it was purchased in Iowa in 1987.

Re: 69 Camaro find.
There was a 69 BB car that left my part of Iowa in 1987 and went to Minnesota. Long shot, but could be. This particular car was painted black with candy apple Z stripes, flat hood, and some strange little shrapnel holes in the floor from where a high schooler caused an M21 to come apart at around 6 grand. Car was sent to MN strictly for 1/4 mile duty. Not original colors (obviously), but original unknown by me. Find any black paint anywhere on it?

Re: 69 Camaro find.
This car was purchased around 87 and it was a Maroon car with a white vinyl top (still that color). Thanks for the response though, what part of central Iowa are you from?

Re: 69 Camaro find.
Do you know any history on the car before it was in Iowa. Ed

Re: 69 Camaro find.
Not yet no, I am working on that.

Re: 69 Camaro find.
Ok - I did find out that it does have a small block heater core - I will get the remaining info as soon as I can. Looks like best case scenario that it may be a SS 350 or Z car?

Re: 69 Camaro find.
Ok - the car has one large fuel line, it is possible the 12 bolt is original to the car - I could not find the stamping but it it dated I 28 8, the car was built 4th week of october. The engine and tranny both look to have come out of a 71 Chevelle Ls-5, tranny is a 72CR and the block is a 289 casting CRW stamp. Car runs real good and is pretty nice. I put it on ebay for him - my user name is mbahnsen if anyone wants to see pics.
Thanks mike |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
If original to the car, the one large fuel line could
indicate one of two things: A Z/28 or an L-6. The heater core configuration should rule out a big block for you, unless someone swapped it ( WHY ! ). The 12437NOR140505 trim tag could be either 6 or 8 cylinder so you need to look at the VIN on the dash. If it starts with a 12337, you're looking at another converted L-6 Camaro. If it starts with a 12437, this indicates an 8 cylinder so that should rule out the 6 banger. I believe L-6 cars got a 5/16 single fule line. Z's and L/78's got a 3/8 single fule line. L/48, L/35, and L/34 all got the double fuel line ( 3/8 feed, 1/4 return ). I really have no idea what the standard V-8 2bbl Camaros got in the way of fuel lines. Anybody know? Probably 3/8. The rear date appears to be good for a 10-D-68 build. The stamping should be on the front portion of the passenger side axle tube. I have heard that some Z/28's could have come with 5-leaf rear springs. But I'll have to leave that to others to debate. I'm not a Z/28 guy! Steve |
Re: 69 Camaro find.
Early '69 327 2bbls and later 307 2bbls, also had a single 3/8" fuel line.

I just know it went to Minneapolis area and was to be used strictly for 1/4 mile duty. It was a black '69 with candy apple red stripes. The car had a big block in it, but unsure if orignally that way. Very nice car. If you know of where it ended up, I have some kind of interesting stories about it when it was still in everyday use (literally). |
