COPO.com Website
I just saw that Ed Cunneen has removed all the COPO VINs from his site and posted that he is no longer documenting these cars. Here is the messege from his site.
James Effective November 13, 2005 I will no longer be maintaining a registry of COPO's, or certify/ inspect vehicles. I have spent over 30 years working on this project, and have had many enjoyable memories. However, I feel now it is time to spend more time enjoying my family. Thank you all for your past patronage. |
Re: COPO.com Website
I don't blame him...too much liability involved today.
|
Re: COPO.com Website
That is really a shame. Ed has contributed enormously to the hobby and especially the COPO cars. I hope he will reconsider at some point and perhaps add a disclaimer if needed for liability purposes.

Re: COPO.com Website
Mmmmm...now it will be a real treat getting certification for the car I'm researching https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif...where's the "crying" icon???...

Re: COPO.com Website
What a true shame. I hope all is ok!
From our dealings, Ed is a stand up guy who excellent work. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif goes to him! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |

Re: COPO.com Website
I would guess a lawsuit, a rebody, a cert, and money. In the end its always about the buck.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
Ed is a good guy and always helpful, hopefully everything is ok..Enjoy your family Ed! |
Re: COPO.com Website
What will happen to his database? Is it for sale? Will it go to the CRG for public access?
Ed was always nice to me, and I hope that he enjoys his family. It can get tirering being THE authority, and it's not hard to see why he stepped down. Good luck, Ed |
Re: COPO.com Website
Was anyone smart enough to make copys of the registry when it was up? I know I sure wasnt I guess you kind of take that stuff for granted. It sure would be nice just to know what Vins where on there..Its going to turn into clone/scam city once the crooks find out you can get a cert. or check vins anymore..Anyways I hope Ed enjoys the family life he has provided a great service over the years Thanks Ed. I also would be curious if the data base/web site will be forsale.

Re: COPO.com Website
My car was on the registry for just 2 weeks..was great to see my VIN posted as a registered car..oh well. I too have nothing but good things to say about Ed...he wil be sorely missed https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: COPO.com Website
What a shame Ed decided to stop certifing copos, if its for his family thats one thing. I hope its not because all of the behind the back BS that goes on. There are certain people in the car arena you cant even talk to unless you have a credit card number ready to give him. Ed would always talk and he would not charge a dime. Thanks Ed and hopefully some day you will change your mind.

Re: COPO.com Website
With the talented builders out there, it is pretty risky business certifying any car these days. You would pretty well have to strip a car to bare metal to have any idea what has been modified and changed. GM of Canada just tells you what options came from the factory with a given VIN. They don't put themselves in the position of verifying the authenticity of a given car. That can be foolhardy from a legal standpoint. Right about now certifications are going to get very thorough and very costly if you can find anyone to do it at all. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Is this the future of our Hobby?
Sometimes it makes me want to sell out.... Good Luck to your future and the Family ED! :-) |

Is this the future of our Hobby? Sometimes it makes me want to sell out.... [/ QUOTE ] Why is that, all of a sudden you dont like cars anymore? I really liked the old days much better when you went out and got the car you liked and drove it like you stole it. I still do and have no interest in owning a high priced trailer queen. I can go to shows and look at others who would rather polish there exhaust pipe than to see where ground zero is on the tach. Money is now the driving force and has replaced most of the true enthusiests in all aspects of these cars. |
Re: COPO.com Website
I don't think this will affect the hobby a great deal because I would not buy a car solely on that certification. Maybe he should give his information to the moderators of site so the posted here.

No disrespect but one man doesn't make the hobby. It's the collective interest of everyone involved that makes it what it is. Good luck Ed. Rick H. |
Re: COPO.com Website
Based on what he posted on his website he is doing it for the betterment of his family. Hopefully he can now spend the time he feels he needs with his family. I would also hope he has some exit strategy where his information could still be used by the hobbiest for the continued improvement in documenting SuperCars.
The internet really provides a great resource in researching almost any topic. There are no sole sources of information any longer, the more we share and debate, the more each one of us learns and benefits as a whole. |
Re: COPO.com Website
I think we have all the information in one format or another...we'll see if we can get it posted.

Re: COPO.com Website
I had no idea that an entire website would be archived!
Note that the archive happened on 11/21/2004, so those are older versions. |
Re: COPO.com Website
Actually at web.archive.org you can find older versions of most web sites!

Re: COPO.com Website
I think most of you are pretty smart guys. But there are a few who destroy it for others by running there own mouths. ENOUGH said this should tell you why he stopped.

Re: COPO.com Website
Who was just running their mouth Sean ? Some people just call a spade a spade.
|
Re: COPO.com Website
I do not think it would be wise to throw out some names do to the legal implications that would arise. Ed was good for the hobby is all I can say is glad my cars documented and I feel sorry for the guys who had not had there cars done. I think it is a little more then calling a spade spade. Shame on the people who ruined it.

Re: COPO.com Website
Who ruined what? Did I miss something? Ed wants to spend more time with his family. Nothing is as important as time with loved ones.
|
Re: COPO.com Website
Never met Ed, only know of his work through many car collectors who have used his services. Whatever his reasons for taking a break they must be respected. No one person is the hobby, we are all important parts of the big picture. Dealing with each other openly and honestly is the most important thing. No one can "certify" integrity, you either have it or you don't! Good luck Ed...

Re: COPO.com Website
Could this have somthing to do with the COPO Chevelle he was trying to sell a month ago (+/-)?
|
Re: COPO.com Website
I have never met Ed. What a great service he has done over the years. I wish Ed well with the family and other stuff, I can understand totally. For a younger car guy like myself I really appreciate the people who had passion and knowledge to help the hobby. Thanks Ed, enjoy.

Re: COPO.com Website
Ed Cunneen was invaluable in assisting me with getting my Former COPO Camaro Certified. He had an amazing memory and instantly knew my Car and it's previous Owner by name when I first contacted him. I believe the Car was possibly the last Camaro to be COPO Certified and for that and his knowledge and patience, I am very Grateful. Thank you Mr. Cunneen and have a Great Thanksgiving with your Family and Friends who have patiently waited for you all these years!!- David Winkler Former Owner of the Only COPO Certified REEDMAN CHEVROLET #9561 COPO CAMARO

Re: COPO.com Website
I have talked with Ed and he is a great guy and really knows his stuff. I see that the link to his site is no longer on the links page, why is that. Ed

Re: COPO.com Website
Go back to the first post in this thread. It's obvious he wants to take a back seat and the removal of his site would seem a good gesture on our part to allow him to do just that. Adios Ed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif
|
Re: COPO.com Website
I agree...did you take him off your site yet Ed ?
|
Re: COPO.com Website
shame..... he is a loss.........to the "real people of this hobby https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Re: COPO.com Website
Al!!...long time fella..now if Bill would surface...
|
Re: COPO.com Website
my .02 on the link removal. Ed wishes to not Certify the cars any longer which is his right. Along with removing the VIN listings that we all wish we would have copied he also removed his links page as well. Guess if it were my site, I would have removed the links as well no matter which site.
|
Re: COPO.com Website
Sorry to see Ed go. He was very helpful when I was considering various copo cars. Only mistake I made with him was not getting my copo car certified after I found the correct car. I figured all the documentation I have was more than enough. I would gladly pay his fee now if I could do it over again.
