1970 COPO Z28?
I am looking at a 1970 Z28 with the tall rear spoiler. What is the best way to verify that the car is a true COPO car and are the COPO Z's any more valuable than the standard Z?
|
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
What is the build date on the car?

Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Haven't seen the car in person yet; where would I find that information?
|
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
I think you can tell by the info on the trim tag; right? The code on this particular car is 04A.
|
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Good that you asked. 04A is too early for 70 COPO 9796.
Keep looking!! Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Cant recall where, but know I have seen (your) documentation on COPO dating.....et all.
Sooooo what do you make of THIS April Z with Three piece spoiler.....someone removed one piece and added three pc or ?????? Chuck |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
The best way to tell if it's a true COPO 9796 is if you can get the build sheet. If this isn't possible (b/c not all cars came w/ build sheets) you need to check the mounting holes to the rear spoiler to see if its perfectly punched out, (anyone w/ a drill can install a spoiler). Also, I would speak with the original owner, if possible, find out if they special ordered the spoiler. Learn as much as you can because there are many that have different opinions on the exact dates. As for value the car is worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay .

Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
You are right! GM drilled the holes to a specification assigned by a print. There was an early print and a later print. The tooling was also revised so the part numbers for the spoiler will show revision # on them.
The best documentation is the original owner https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/show.../page/2#138884 Phil |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
I dont believe that tall spoiler cars are worth more. Everyone that I know likes the short spoiler cars better anyway.

Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Ouch.... That Hurt.. You should know last year I turned down 6 figures for mine so I guess you could be wrong for at least one car- unless other 70 standard D-80 cars are getting real offers over $100K these days....
You got an opinion I guess, but I can tell you for fact I would not intrude into a thread on GTO's - Just to add profound negitivity to the thread. That is my opinion, and like you I am entitled to it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Phil |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Phil, when you say (the part numbers for the spoiler will show revision #'s on them )what are the differances on these numbers & what do they look like ? as for values like i said it depends how much someone is willing to pay. i paid 60,000 & have been offered 80,000 from someone obviously crazier than i.

"Just to add profound negitivity to the thread."
I didn't think he was adding negativity to the thread at all. If you read the very first post the question was asked "are the COPO Z's any more valuable than the standard Z?" I can see you being offered that kind of money for your car but I believe the amount is based more on the condition of your car rather than the spoiler. |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Thanks Charlie,
That follow up to my post was perhaps a little easy for me to take out of context in the heat of the moment. Thank God for Moderators.... Oh yea https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...arleySucks.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif Phil |

Phil, when you say (the part numbers for the spoiler will show revision #'s on them )what are the differances on these numbers & what do they look like ? [/ QUOTE ] It is the same number on the end caps marked left and right the part number is followed by a REV #. This is how AO Smith designated the early tooling and marked the production changes to the cap molds. End cap Fitment on the quarters was a big problem which postponed and greatly limited the number of cars built in 70. Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
so it should have a part # & a revised # after the part # ?????
|
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Jack Seymour has graciously offered to look at the car for me. If anyone can verify the condition, and options, on this car I'm sure he can. I'll keep everyone posted.

Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Phil ,mine has a diamond shape with the letters AOS & a numerical number 1 under the AOS all inside the diamond shape. it also say's lt.3990475 with no additional numbers added to the part #.

Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Congrats you have real AO Smith spoiler caps! Sounds about right for the underside markings.
Phil |
Re: 1970 COPO Z28?
Phil you say there are markings for the early tooling & revision # 's added to the part # when the tooling was revised. didn't ask if i have real AOS end caps, just noting that i probably have early tooling caps since i don't have a revision # as you state.
