Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
I've heard this story a couple of different times now and have always wondered about it's authenticity. Yenko would send someone to the ractrack to look for Yenko's being raced. After seeing one go down the track, this person would approach the car in the pits or staging lanes, write down the VIN# through the windshield and promptly void the warranty Monday morning. This story seems fairly feasible as it would make terrible business sense to warranty cars being raced.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
Well then why the H*** would he sell these cars in the first place?
Weren't they marketed as being built for the street/strip originally? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif |
Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
I spoke to the guy who raced the Colonial yenko deuce at Suffolk County Dragway in VA about this subject. He thought I was outright crazy, and said that he never heard nor saw of this actually happening. I asked this particular person bec/ this was supposed to be happening in VA. Nice story, but not sure how true it is https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
I think Mark heard the story wrong...

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
I have heard the story as well, but heard it was a rep from GM that was doing the checking. That would make more sense, as the $$ for any warranty work would come out of GM's pocket.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
Makes no business sense at all. How much would it cost to send a rep to each track, pay the admission, just in the hopes of finding someone to void. Sounds like urban myth to me. With all the warranties sold over the GM product line, I guarantee that the costs associated with the warranty work done on sYc Camaros was not even a blip on the screen. Just my .02.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
Alright then, maybe I did hear it wrong and it was instead a GM rep doing the voiding. The outcome would still be the same. What do you think the dealer would think if Ed Hedrick brung his lettered car back to the dealership for some warranty work. That probably wouldn't go over too well. I wish one of my race cars had a warranty because I would be at the track 4 nights a week and would never worry about getting dirty and greasy again. On a side note, back in 1969, my father was purchasing a brand new Hemi Superbee from King Dodge .....up until the point they told him when the car leaves the lot, the warranty expires.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
Gates Chevrolet didn't give Bill Hunter any trouble when he scattered the L-72 in his HO Yenko Camaro on the first weekend of ownership...in fact they took his blown up Camaro back on trade and gave him a brand new DY Camaro for $100 difference. Now that's customer service! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
The GM Rep story was in Muscle Car Review, regarding Yenko cars sold at Colonial. Quite a few of these cars were sold to sailors coming back from Nam, and the first thing they wanted to do was take the car to the track and race their buddies.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
This story is not so far fetched.
Subaru has a program in place right now, they are looking for kids racing their WRX's Racing your new Subaru voids the warrenty. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif |
Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
Another warranty story. A friend of mine bought a brand new 68 or 69 L-88 Corvette here in St. Louis and was told by the salesman there would be no warranty when it left the lot because they knew it would be raced. So he proceeded to back up to edge of the lot and started dumping the clutch after telling the salesman that if it was going to break, he wanted it to break on their lot. This made the dealership owner come running outside and he ended up giving a 30 day warranty on the car. The car is long gone now but many of the orginal L-88 parts are still in his garage.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
No warranty is only for full time race cars.
I can see that. Having said that, I know Chevrolet will take any excuse possible to remove a warranty. probably reflects the quality of their cars and state of their Company. Many of the car manufacturers stated this on the sales sheet and even on a plate on the car, that or a reduced warranty. If anyone ever tried to tell me I had no warranty because I was racing the car (for fun)....They would have the car back, and I would get my money back, and I'd shop elsewhere next time. That warranty removal BS would never fly on people that used the car street/strip multi purpose, because for those cars, that was normal wear and tear. |
Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
Years ago John Leifield was my neighbor. He worked for Ford and was assigned the Shelby account in 1966, and specifically the Shelby Mustang. John was an engineer and his job was to make SURE the Hertz Shelby Mustangs were in good shape on Monday morning. They knew the $25 a day rental cars were being raced over the weekend. Now that sounds to me like Ford wanted the cars raced......and you can bet Chevrolet did too.

Re: Race on Sunday, No Warranty Come Monday
I thought I heard or read that many of those Hertz Shelbys were converted to automatics after so much abuse to put a dampener on everyone's fun. Anyone know about this?
