Hurst white ball vs. Hurst T-handle

It would be interesting to hear some personal preferences on the classic white Hurst ball vs. the Hurst T-handle. I love the look of the white ball, but when it comes to driving, something just feels right about that T-handle in your right hand. I'm kinda torn on which to use. Be great to hear some other opinions. Thanks.

I have a white Hurst Tee handle which I used on the Chevelle. The handle had yellowed with age. Fine sand paper took the yellow coat off and clear coat made the handle look like new. They are so easy to change that you can use whatever suits your fancy that day. Our 396 car has a Hurst box with a Muncie shift handle. That works fine too and looks stock.

I have a white Hurst T-handle (courtesy of GTO DON) that looks and feels great. Also have a Hurst gold fleece t-handle (NOS) and sometimes I use my ball with the seam in it. But most of the time I like the vintage white T-handle!

What is the gold fleece T handle? I have a brass T handle I picked up at a swapmeet that I thought was homemade. It is VERY heavy and serves as my keg tap handle at the moment. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

The Gold fleece T handle is a fuzzy surface actually it's called flocking, Hurst also made them in black.
I just bought an NOS gold one on ebay a few days ago.(Nostalgia)
I used to put these on all my cars back in the 70's and early 80's.
Until I got ANAL on factory correct restorations.

Verne, I'm kinda honored to have your 409th post on this thread. Seen your photo this month in the new BowTie magazine with your gold '63. Congrats on the award. Here's one for you. I was at the midnight madness drags here in St. Louis and there happens to be a '62 Bel Air 409 Sport Coupe there with rusty tow bar tabs, ancient giant traction bars underneath and very old faded-out U.S. Nationals decals on the front vent windows. The car was faded out Honduras Maroon and did it sure look out of place among all the newer cars there that night. Somebody had a great find. I went out and bought a camera phone the next day because I'm sick of not being able to take photos when I run into stuff like this.

Re: Hurst white ball vs. Hurst T-handle

I like the T-handles.
The only problem with the ball is I either bust the radio or my knuckle in 3rd gear.
The problem with the T-handle is I have broken 1 shifter & 1 transmission case shifting 2nd.
I am a little over-zelous when I shift. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif
I solved the problem by going to a Liberty crash-box
with a vertigate shifter & a metal T-handle. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

How did they build the guts of the Liberty ?? Can you tell us an "approximate" price ?

I think you answered your own question:

The T-handle will always "feel" like it shifts better (and it probably does)but the white ball (and a nice, patina'd one,not a shiny white one)is the CLASSIC look for all hurst-equipped performance Chevrolets. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: Hurst white ball vs. Hurst T-handle

The thing will shift ANY GEAR at ANY RPM.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
The Liberty was built from a Chrysler Hemi box, then done clutchless.
You have to get used to either shifting fast all the time, (good practice), or double clutching &
forget about downshifting, between the clutchless & the V-Gate, it's a mission.

So ... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif... I LOVE IT!!!
(cost was $1500 + the transmission)

Re: Hurst white ball vs. Hurst T-handle

Are the guts basically just "slick shifted", or more of a Jericho type thing?

To be honest, I'm not sure. All I know is I never had a problem with it, so I never took it apart.
It is very noisy & sounds like it's coming apart every time you shift it.

... I LOVE IT!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Hurst white ball vs. Hurst T-handle

Funny, but I've never liked a T-handle....even on an auto shifter I prefer a ball. My 70 RS/SS Camaro had a nice old white ball on the Hurst shifter....a little yellowed and crazed...looked great, felt right.
